Is Jhase Thomas next up for LSU in the Bayou State?

Destrehan High has been kind to LSU football over the years, whether that was sending a trio of Jefferson brothers to Baton Rouge or the most recent addition of 2024 signee Kolaj Cobbins.

For the 2025 class, Destrehan has a handful of FBS prospects – and one has the full attention of the LSU defensive staff.

Destrehan safety Jhase Thomas made another trip to LSU’s campus this past weekend, spending extended time with prospects like LSU signee Michael Turner out of John Curtis and LSU commitment Jaboree Antoine out of Westgate.

Thomas was also able to continue building a rapport with a number of staff members, a push being led by safety coach Jake Olsen and former Recruiting Specialist and current Director of Player Retention Sherman Wilson.

“The visit was great,” Thomas said. “The coaching staff always shows a lot of love every time I come to Baton Rouge. They show they want me and appreciate me over there. I talk with Coach Olsen and Coach Sherman a lot. I am also in contact with people on the defensive side of the ball like Coach Corey Raymond and Coach Blake Baker.

Olsen, who is in his first season as LSU’s safeties coach, has circled Thomas as one of his top targets in the Bayou State for the 2025 class after the Destrehan standout made the move from not just a wide receiver, but one of the program’s starting defensive backs.

“Coach Olsen texts me every day, pretty much,” Thomas said. “I am building a really good relationship with him. We talk football, but we also talk stuff outside of football and all that. He is a very down to the earth guy.”

With the Destrehan to LSU pipeline flowing in recent years, the 6-foot-3, 180-plus pound rising senior is hoping his name can be next on a long list of Wildcats to land an offer from the LSU Tigers.

“This offer would mean a lot,” Thomas said. “Of course, being a Louisiana kid, you always want that option to stay home. LSU being one of the best schools in the country, you always want that option to stay home in front of family. It would be good to have that.

“The Destrehan to LSU legacy is crazy,” Thomas said. “We’ve had a lot of former players be really successful there, and they use that in recruiting with Destrehan guys. They let us know that the Destrehan guys can come to LSU and be successful. All the Jefferson brothers were successful there, John Emery was a great player from Destrehan, and now Kolaj Cobbins is over there. It’s going to be fun to watch.

“Now, I am just working hard and hoping they pull the trigger. I feel like they might offer, but right now we’ve been building that relationship and it’s going great.”

Thomas has a double-digit offer list that includes teams from across the country, and following visits to Oxford, Ole Miss is among the teams who have been recruiting Thomas the hardest.

On Wednesday, Texas Tech’s staff jumped into the mix with an offer following Destrehan’s practice.

“Outside of LSU, I would say Ole Miss, Houston, Tulane and Texas Tech have been some teams recruiting me a lot,” Thomas said. “That was pretty cool to get a new offer from Texas Tech this week. It just gives me more opportunities.”

What’s ahead for the Bayou State native and one of the Top 20 prospects in Louisiana’s 2025 class?

“After spring ball is over, I will set up a date in the summer for my commitment,” Thomas said. “I plan to commit before the football season. That’s it right now as far as recruitment goes. I will set up some official visits, then take it from there.”

When it comes to the in-state Tigers, Thomas offered up a straightforward stance on LSU and the fanbase across the state.

“Geaux Tigers!,” he said.
