The “quarterback competition” in Chicago is officially over as head coach Matt Eberflus announced Friday that Caleb Williams is the starter for the Bears in 2024.

“No conversation,” Eberflus said of Williams. “He’s the starter.”

Williams was always praised for his leadership abilities at USC, and he’ll look to carry that into his professional career.

“To be a great leader, you’ve got to learn how to follow first,” Williams said at a Friday press conference. “So right now, I’m following all the vets, I’m following all the coaches. I’m listening, having both ears open and my mouth shut. When I get to the point, when I learn everything, when I learn the ways of how we do with the culture, the playbook and what the offensive line, receivers are all doing, running backs, tight ends and things like that, then you can start taking the lead, then you can start taking the helms of all of it and take the next steps.

“For right now, though, I’m listening more than I’m speaking and talking, and I’m taking it one step at a time, being in the moment.”

Williams hit the practice field on Friday for the first time as a professional. The Bears are holding their three-day rookie minicamp at Halas Hall. Players arrived on Thursday, and both Friday and Saturday will feature non-contact practices.

Williams will be able to throw to a familiar face during the minicamp. Former USC wide receiver and Williams’ good friend, John Jackson III, is participating as an unsigned rookie invite.

Reporters were able to get some video of Williams throwing passes to receivers.
