USC is adding more NFL experience to its defensive coaching staff as the Trojans are set to bring in former offensive coordinator Jim Hostler as a defensive analyst working with D’Anton Lynn. The expected move was first reported by Bruce Feldman of The Athletic.

The 58-year-old Hostler is a longtime NFL offensive assistant. He began with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2000 as an offensive quality control coach. He served in a variety of offensive roles including quarterbacks coach, wide receivers coach and passing game coordinator. He was the offensive coordinator for the San Francisco 49ers in 2007 and won Super Bowl XLVII as the wide receivers coach for the Baltimore Ravens. Hostler also coached for the Jets, Bills, Colts, Packers, Panthers and Washington Football Team. Most recently, he was a senior offensive assistant with the Detroit Lions.

Lynn and Hostler never overlapped for a season in the NFL.

As a defensive analyst, Hostler would be able to scout upcoming opposing offenses for scheme, tendencies or favorable matchups. He could also self-scout Lynn’s defense and provide feedback as an offensive mind who doesn’t need to coach the USC offense.

USC already has two defensive analysts on staff. Taylor Mays continues to serve in that role for USC and the Trojans also brought in Skyler Jones from the Oregon Ducks this offseason.
