See the link below. From the article:

“Vision includes focus on student success; research excellence; land-grant impact; diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; and internal operations; presidential vision and goals will support framework for University's next strategic plan”

”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi today (Feb. 27) shared her vision for the future of the University — a vision defined by building steadfastly on Penn State’s purpose, enabling agility across the institution to respond to ever-changing needs, and leveraging the University’s many strengths to realize strategic opportunities.

“Focusing on our purpose, increasing our agility and leveraging our opportunity will be the core drivers of the future of our great University,” Bendapudi said. “We must build on our legacy as Pennsylvania’s only land-grant university and our foundational purpose of serving our commonwealth, our nation and our world. We must be agile to meet the needs of our students, an evolving workforce, the commonwealth and, indeed, humanity. We must rise to meet the opportunities before us, to continue preparing our students for lifelong success, to continue solving the world’s most pressing problems through cutting-edge research, and to continue living our 21st-century land-grant mission.”

Using these as her guiding principles, Bendapudi has identified five key goals for the University to work toward over the next five academic years:

  • Enhance student success
  • Grow interdisciplinary research excellence
  • Increase land-grant impact
  • Foster diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging
  • Transform Penn State’s internal operations“

We’re screwed. 😞

Can't be bothered to click on the link, can someone add the part of the article where she lays out the metrics she's going to use to measure goal accomplishment.
ETA: because she wants to be held accountable.

Enhance student success <----- is this finally a goal, or a spit shine? - Rather than have them fail again?
Grow interdisciplinary research excellence <------ an upgrade from mediocrity? - When you're at the bottom, there's only one way to go?
Increase land-grant impact <------ I guess I'll have to read it to understand - Spread more fertilizer on the IM fields?
Foster diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging <------ "We Are" 'woke' - I don't belong :(
Transform Penn State’s internal operations“ <--------- If this means the BOT---- yeeeaaaah! - Relieve their gas?

Enhance student success - isn't the overall goal of college to get a job? That is student success to me. Setting the students up for success in jobs. I know a few college's do that like Smeal, IST, etc. Other colleges suck balz at doing it like Lib Arts.

Transform Penn State’s internal operations -> I have not read it, but this sounds like there will be cutbacks coming in some departments.

Doesn‘t that mean increase staffing to increase efficiencies?

o_O
How quickly we forgot this classic:

"On Monday, Penn State announced a “strategic” hiring freeze effective Aug. 1 through at least the summer of 2023, according to a university release, after a nearly $200 million deficit for 2021-22.

The freeze is “one tactic among many being taken to help meet the objective of a balanced budget by the summer of 2025, which requires the university to save an estimated $250 million,” the release said."

With realistic expectations and good planning, agility should not (need to) be among the top 3.

C'mon, Mike, you can't rob President Bendapudi of her new buzzword upfront. These things have to last two, maybe three, years.

Tied to Penn State’s strategery:

”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. — As part of a data-driven and holistic approach to fostering greater diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging (DEIB) across the University, Penn State has launched a new DEIB dashboard that tracks metrics related to DEIB across the University.

This new tool supports Penn State President Neeli Bendapudi’s goal to enhance DEIB across the University through a metrics-driven strategy focused on improving DEIB-related outcomes, especially for Penn Staters from underrepresented or historically marginalized groups, in an accountable and demonstrable way. Advancing DEIB across Penn State is one of Bendapudi’s five central goals as part of her vision for the University, which outlines steps and metrics for determining success.“

For f*ck’s sake.

So it’s wrong for the flagship state university to attempt to become more diverse in its recruitment of students and faculty to more adequately reflect the population of the citizens of Pennsylvania? They’re not all white suburban heterosexual Christians.

Nothing wrong with having a more diverse student body, but you should do some research into who benefits from these initiatives, other then the bureaucrats hired to administer them.

And don’t force a more diverse university community (students and staff) to achieve arbitrary metrics. Student admissions and hiring should still be merit-based.
