He was presented with a crap situation, with the departures when he hopped on board, and then the whole covid mess ... and I'm not quite sure how he pulls this one out. At some point he either needs to thread the needle perfectly of giving the youngsters PT and getting them developed while supplementing with some experienced transfers, or he needs to bite the bullet and suffer through a crap season, and hope he can still recruit some top talent while the team is struggling on the court.

I thought Mahaffey was starting to play really well and gain some control over himself, and right then they decided he'd be a primary defender of bigs and he basically had to play out of control a bit in order to compete. And then he just disappeared. He's a real high upside dude, and I think he needs to play a lot to learn when and where to let that energy out, and when to dial it back ... it'll be ugly at times, but it could really pay off down the road.
I agree…tough situation, but our basketball team always seems to face tough situations. If Shrews can’t do it, I’m not sure there’s anyone out there that can.

Respectfully it seems like almost every game going forward is a MUST WIN for any NCAA Tournament hopes.

That would mean we have to win out but that's not true. We need to hold court at home and win the games against lesser opponents. Then we need to win a couple in the B1G Tournament.

Wisconsin is shooting layups every time down. We are shooting much lower percentage shots, and committing way more fouls. It’s a familiar story. We will need to find a hot hand for 3s and get tougher defense inside the paint to hold down the score.

It’s hard to win with no defensive presence in the middle. Wisconsin played better defense tonight and shot layups at will.

I said it SEEMS we need to win out. The problem is there aren’t many lessor opponents.

Tough loss tonight.

I didn't watch the game tonight and won't watch any going forward. No dancing this year so it will now be 4 NCAA Tournament appearances in 57 years. Is there any school with the resources we have that is any worse?

it seems like our need in MBB = need big men in middle is similar to our FB need = big DL.

The biggest problem is WE ARE a lessor opponent.
Hell, I'm pissed and I don't even follow the team that closely. I feel badly for those that do.

Believe it or not, the Penn State baseball team has more NCAA appearances at 17, than the basketball team at 9.
Sorry for the rants. I had a bad bowl of chili for dinner (made it myself).
Mrs. Gambit was out shopping. I think mixing chili sauce, hot sauce, and cocktail sauce in copious amounts was a bad idea. Tasted pretty good but......

Penn State has received a total of 9 NCAA Tournament bids in its history. 121 schools have received more. Please spare me the excuses. For a school with the resources we have, there are none.
The thing with this is, though, that we have always been an *athletic department* with a lot of resources. But we don’t spend those resources on basketball. Since the turn of the millennium, I’d be willing to guess that we have been the lowest annual spenders in the Big Ten on mens basketball every single year, and probably among the lowest in the high major conferences.

The Shrewsberry hire is probably the first time since we joined the conference that we actually spent a little money on the program to the extent that we aren’t last in the league. But we’re still in the bottom 3.

Was tough to watch his post-game press conference last night…..he was crushed and so disappointed.

One ******* asked him why he wasn’t into the game more in the first half, why he wasn’t more enthused. If I had been him I would have just walked out of the room.

I wonder if that‘s the realization that he doesn’t have the talent he needs and/or if this team, overall, is not coachable. Maybe he sees a lack of physical and/or mental acuity that he knows he can’t overcome.

Same old same old same old.
Sadly true. I didn't watch the game but from all I've read, Maryland is a beatable team this year. Our lads in blue needed this one get back on the bubble and they crapped the bed. I think, with the early NCAA talk, and the Michigan blowout, I expected too much. Its not a lack of effort. We are just not that good.

I decided to skip the second half today and glad I did. Frankly I’m tired of watching this team. I don’t blame them but I feel sorry for them, and I just don’t enjoy the games anymore. So I took my wife out to a very nice lunch instead at one of our favorite watering holes which was a good prelude to the festivities tomorrow. We both started off with buffalo chicken corn soup. She had a chicken cheesesteak and I had a terrific fish and chips. Guinness for my wife and just an ice tea for me. Tiramisu for her and English toffee pudding for me. Coffees and probably a nap while I read “Properties of Thirst”, a great book written by a former classmate. This was so much better than watching us lose yet another basketball game in the same old predictable fashion. Someone let me know when we get some B10 caliber players.

You don’t really have to watch the game since they’re pretty much all the same…just watch a rerun of any of their last five games and you’ll see all the rest of their games. Lord knows we’re not going to try anything different, just keep doing the same thing that causes us to lose all these close games.

Just think if we could score FIVE baskets a game from the block with a 4/5 man what our record would be! Just give me the average at best post guy…Krowl?… from Wisky and we have 5 more Big10 wins …really hard to watch this team. We may lose out

Ahh, the Pineville Tavern, a Bucks County institution. We go there occasionally, lots of great spots in the area.

I don't know basketball very well so, I will reserve judgement here. It just appears at this time that CMS might not be the correct coaching choice for our program. Again, I don't know basketball nearly as well as many others. That said... I'll give Shrews one more season before I criticize. He deserves a chance with his own players.
