When you have 3 returning players (now that Jameel Brown has entered the portal), only one of which (Clary) looked good last year, playing only bench minutes, and all the potential incoming frosh have basically already signed elsewhere, it's pretty bleak.

That's just a lot of bodies to have to bring in, and gel into a cohesive unit. But just getting that many bodies worthy of even being a Big 10 quality bench player, will be rough. Not saying it can't be done ... it's just basically starting over from scratch (and we don't know if those remaining 3 will actually stay, either).
Wow , no team has ever come back from such devastation. Oh, right, we did, 2 years ago.

It's OK to have cautious optimism in the program, and still admit that the short-term looks like a very daunting challenge and hurdle to overcome. I hope Rhoades pulls it off, and I hope ND falls flat on their face ... but it's OK to admit reality is real. Rhoades has a tough road ahead of him and a ton of work to do to get his tenure underway on a positive note.

Please use this thread to discuss the PSU MBB 2022-23 preseason, in-season, postseason (B1Gs & NCAAs), and then offseason news about the team, former players, etc.

There was a lot of good posts in the PSU MBB 2021-22 thread. You can access those posts at:

We just got another VCU commit from the portal. He’s a shooting guard named Kern. 6’6”, I believe he’s a sophomore. The big guy will be visiting this weekend. Things are starting to fall into place.

Over the course of his collegiate career, Kern played in 66 games, averaging 3.7 points and 2.1 rebounds per game. The 6’6″ guard played in 35 games and started 19 last season, averaging 5.3 points and 2.7 rebounds per game

With Hicks, Ace, and Kern on the team now we are starting to see the nucleus of a talented starting 5. If others want to get playing time, they best commit to the program. Rhoades knows what he’s doing. Njie and Deloache would round out this team nicely but if not we’ll find some other veteran big bodies who might want to do a grad transfer year to play for PSU. There will be some portal kids available.

Excited about the PG situation with Ace and Kayne Cleary. I think Ace will be able to mentor Kayne and his PT will increase. Hicks & Kern are athletic players and I think Brown takes a step forward to more PT this season. Need to fill the 4 & 5 positions. I think Kebba could play both if he returns. Mahaffey can play 3 and 4 if he returns. Wild card is Dimetrius Lilley, big body but needs lots of off-season work - still a project. But if he can give around 8 minutes of positive play a game that is a plus.
