I know folks despise David Jones, but here
are some bits from his interview with Shrewsberry. Irregardless if NIL, folks blaming Jaypa and Lubrano and Kraft, he was always out of here at the first chance.

The Hoosier State is in his blood. Its state sport courses through his veins.

I remember saying to him that he was in a very different place now. That these people he’d be dealing with were not so infused with the love of his chosen sport.

Why, I asked, was he leaving after just getting PSU hoops rolling? After an unexpected NCAA tournament appearance, a stunning 17-point first-round win over Texas A&M, and a just as impressive 5-point loss to #2-seed Texas?

“At the end of the day, if things are even or close to even, the chance to go back to Indiana and coach one of the major programs in the state, it means so much to me. I’ve coached all over the state. And I understand the history of Notre Dame basketball. It was just a special opportunity.

“That means more to me. It means more to me than other people who may be from somewhere else.”
Ah yes, the famed “Hoosier basketball mystique” which hasn’t exactly been a thing for decades. I heard the same thing when I moved to Kentucky and how it was all about basketball….I can tell you, the high school basketball here isn’t all that good. My guess is there are multiple teams in PA that would crush the best team in Kentucky.

Coach Shrewsberry may be in for a rude awakening. Basketball at ND may be more important than it is at PSU. But if he thinks that it's on par with what it is at Indiana or Purdue he is sorely mistaken. Football rules!

It ain’t Hoosiers anymore in Indiana.

Mike Mauti calls Jay Paterno “toxic”: Jay
Paterno’s words were not received kindly by Nittany Lion fans, or Penn State legend Michael Mauti, who publicly fired back at Paterno, stating that, “The response from dedicated alumni is the result of you and your cronies’ definition of ‘meeting every basketball’s NIL request.’ How can continue to spit this garbage? You continue to undermine the progress and efforts being made to genuinely align and unify PSU.
He followed up by saying, the Penn State community deserve the best. We need all hands on deck, not a few guys brokering behind closed doors using words without deeds. Your input on this matter is toxic and your relevancy has expired in this era of collegiate athletics.”

Anyone have a scorecard?

I love Penn state. The more things change, the more they stay the same.

Somehow Miami did it. Football school with no basketball history has been rolling. Their coach is no living legend and their arena isn’t having to turn people away from the gates. Florida 5 star recruits always get picked off by Duke and Co. Plus, there are two other major instate rivals to compete with for talent. But somehow, Miami pulled it off.

NIL money. $400k to one basketball player.

I wasn’t being disrespectful to the guy. Only to say that he isn’t necessarily a draw for an automatic final four team of McDonald’s all Americans every year.
Didn't take it that way, so no problem. Let's just say that PSU could do worse than Jim Larranaga and the coach it hires will probably not be "a draw for an automatic final four team of McDonald’s all Americans every year" but may become one.🤞

Who’s left?
Clary, Njie, Brown, and Lilley. I think that is it as of the moment.

Now, some of those who have "entered the portal" may end up staying - Dorsey, Mahaffey, Johnson (did I miss any?) - and Lundy could always decide to NOT pursue the professional options - but I think that is it as of now (wrt kids who were scholarship recruits).
Obviously, even in a best case scenario, 2023-24 was going to be a VERY challenging year vav putting together a roster.

And me with no eligibility left
Imagine the NIL deals a 69 year old could get from drug companies!
If there had been a three-point line back in the day, they’d be saying “Rick Mount or Downtown Freddie Brown, they were good but LionJim would kick both their asses.” A lot of deaf kids are good shooters; myself, I didn’t know how to be a friend and so every day would shoot alone for hours. I was a one-trick pony but it was a nice trick. Jerry West: “Shooters are a dime a dozen.”

So, next year's relevant roster is potentially:

GUARDS:
Kanye Clary
Dallion Johnson
Jameel Brown (where's he been all year?)
Braeden Shrewsberry
Logan Imes

FORWARDS:
Seth Lundy (I'm guessing he leaves)
Evan Mahaffey
Caleb Dorsey
Carey Booth

CENTERS:
Kebba Njie
Demetrius Lilley

That's likely going to be a very rough year, barring Shrewsberry dipping heavily into the transfer portal once again. The question is, if Shrews does go heavy on the transfer portal, will the youngsters transfer out, seeing as their time may be very limited?

So, what's this list look like now?

GUARDS:
Kanye Clary
Jameel Brown

FORWARDS:
NONE. NONE FORWARDS.

CENTERS:
Kebba Njie
Demetrius Lilley

Granted, some of the kids already on campus who hit the portal may decide to come back after talking to Rhoades (only Mahaffey is really exciting from that crew), but that dude has his work cut out for him. Hopefully they gave him 2 years' worth of salary for Year 1, because that guy is going to be putting in WORK just to field a team.

Maybe he has some players he’s recruited at VCU who will come over with him or others who are already enrolled who will transfer. It’s not as bleak as it seems. He was known as someone who had good success at VCU st getting kids off of the portal. In fact we should start a separate message board string on the basketball portal now to start tracking the portal prospects to see who is out there. Can anyone take a stab at this?

And now Jameel Brown has entered the transfer portal. Awesome.

When you have 3 returning players (now that Jameel Brown has entered the portal), only one of which (Clary) looked good last year, playing only bench minutes, and all the potential incoming frosh have basically already signed elsewhere, it's pretty bleak.

That's just a lot of bodies to have to bring in, and gel into a cohesive unit. But just getting that many bodies worthy of even being a Big 10 quality bench player, will be rough. Not saying it can't be done ... it's just basically starting over from scratch (and we don't know if those remaining 3 will actually stay, either).

Let things play out. And if we we have to start from scratch, so be it. You only need a few basketball players to have a solid team.

What alternative do we have - we we’re screwed by Shrews and the new way in college sports (next to new rules).

VCU might be next courtesy of PSU.

I think he will try to keep Clary, Njie and Mahaffey, maybe Lilley). Also go real hard to keep Booth. There are 3 freshmen on his VCU roster I would think he would try and bring with him, Lawal 6'8 F, Fermin 6'10 C (from PA) and former top 100 recruit who redshirted last year, Fats Billups who is a 6'7 wing. That would be plenty of size so he would go after guards like Jameer Nelson possibly and Ish Leggett from URI or my surprise guy Bryce Butler from D2 West LIberty. He led them to the D2 finals and is a 6'5 guard from LAtrobe. He can shoot it from 3 and can get to the basket.

Does Rhoades have pictures of Lilley?

Mmm…Fermin. In keeping with the Rhoades Kill theme.

So in a matter of days we have gone from having no coach and only a few players left to having a well respected coach, some good assistants, and the prospects of a number of strong transfers from VCU and players from the portal. I’d say my optimism is well justified. Let’s get to work. I’m especially looking forward to seeing some big men in a Penn State uniform next season.
