No great surprise there. Lions need Labriola to beat Massa.

Can't believe Michigan didn't challenge there not being a takedown there for Massa.

I'd have to check the rules (there aren't bricks in high school), but I'm not sure that they could throw it in that situation.

And if they had thrown it, they would have wasted the challenge, as Massa was clearly out of bounds, and then stepped back in.

Yeah, I should have edited my post, did see that on the replay. Good catch. That's why you're the referee!

184 Semifinal
#1 seed Aaron Brooks vs. #4 seed Taylor Venz (Nebraska)

Per 1
Venz tried a high crotch, nothing. AB has a low single, then elevates it, but Venz has a whizzer in, they scramble, and AB gets the TD, 2-0. Venz works to a 4-pt stance, then back to the mat, then back to a 4-pt, then back to the mat. They are near the edge, but AB has a good ride going. Stalemate with 1:00 left (or they were OOB; not sure which). Ben to his feet but AB has him dancing as he elevates one leg, then returns him. End. RT @ 1:58 for AB

Per 2
AB takes bottom. AB sits out and tries to get a reversal, and after a scramble he gets it, 4-0. Venz sits out and nearly gets a rev but only gets an esc, 4-1. Then AB in on the legs and gets a TD, 6-1. Oops, I missed why things got stopped (wife asked me something). Venz works up slowly, and AB returns him. Back to his feet, but the buzzer sounds. End RT @ 3:02 for AB

Per 3
Venz takes bottom. Caution on AB. A 2nd caution on AB. Venz with a stout and then the esc, 6-2. RT is locked for AB. Venz shoots, AB counters and gets a low single, but a PD call stops things. AB in on a leg, Venz sprawl, and stalemate with 51 sec left. Ben in on a head outside single, AB sprawls and tries to get behind, but a stalemate with 19 sec left. AB on a low single but the buzzer sounds. With 3:06 in RT, it's a 7-2 DEC for AB.

He'll face Myles Amine (Mich) in the final

197 Semifinal
#2 seed Max Dean vs. #3 seed Cameron Caffey (MSU) (I'll use CC for him)

Per 1
CC worked undercooks, nothing. Dean in on a single, elevates it, and trips him dow for the TD, 2-0. They are near the edge, Dean tilts him, but only gets 1 swipe, then OOB with 1:59 left. CC to his feet, returned, to his feet again, then OOB with 1:45 left.CC starts up but is tripped down. 1:30 left. CC ties to work up but Dean returns him and flattens him. Dean throws in a boot. Stoppage for ?? (I think stalemate) with 32 sec left. They are cleaning the mat, so perhaps that's why the ref stopped it. Deanwith a boot in again and a cross body ride, and CC isn't doing much. End. RT @ 2:15 for Dean

Per 2
Dean takes bottom. he works up and is returned. He works up again and is returned. CC tries to throw in a boot but Dean blocks that. Dean works to his feet, and he's out, 3-0. They are near the edge (CC was actually standing OOB), so hard to get anything going. Dean in on a single, CC does a split, the edge is a problem for Dean, and they go OOB with 18 sec left. End RT @ 1:41 for Dean

Per 3
CC takes neutral. CC shoots, Dean counters and gets a low single, CC counters but Dean holds the ankle, then Dean loses the grip and CC gets the TD, 3-2. Dean to his feet, and he's out, 4-2. He still has 1:23 in RT. Stall warning on CC (probably for being OOB again). CC shoots, nothing. CC shoots, Dean tries to counter, nothing. 30 sec left. RT is locked for Dean. CC in on a leg but loses it. Then Dean on a leg but they are OOB with 1 sec left. End. With 1:23 in RT, it's a 5-2 DEC for Max Dean.

He'll be in the final against the winner of the other semi between Schultz (Neb) and Brucki (Mich)

Nice match by Dean. Schultz hung on despite Brucki shooting a lot late. Fun one on deck tomorrow.

285 Semifinal
#3 seed Kerk vs. #2 seed Tony Cassioppi (Iowa (I'll use TC)

Per 1
TC with a semi-shot, nothing. Not a lot thru 2 min. End

Per 2
TC defers, and Kerk takes bottom. Kerk tries a roll and gets a quick reversal, 2-0. TD to his feet and he's out, 2-1. 1 min left, and not much since the flurry at the start of the period. End. RT @ 2 sec for Kerk

Per 3
TC takes bottom. TC slowly working up, and then to his feet, and he's out, 2-2. Kerk with a bit of a shot, nothing. TC with a shot but Kerk kicks free. 1 min left. Kerk with a double and he gets the TD, 4-2. TC works to his feet, and is returned. TC tries a roll, and gets the reversal with 4 sec left, 4-4. End.

SV
TC shoots for a low single, and he works around and gets the TD. 4-6 DEC for Cassioppi

Damn. Nice end of the match for TC

Snatched defeat from the jaws of victory. Why the hell didn't Kerk just lay on the ankles. What a fundamental mistake. I don't think Kerk is the smartest wrestler out there just physically skilled.

Seems like yet another Big Ten Meet Championship that's going someplace else.

Channeling my inner Cael…Kerk got what he deserved. If he deserved to win, he’d finish it. If not, you lose.

How many times did we quit tonight. What the hell. Michigan and iowa hungry. So disappointing. Kerk had him and gave it away. Unbelievable
I think you hit it…hunger. Did Nick Lee have to turn and turn and turn? CStar is hungry. But collectively, you don’t see the same hunger across the board.

Its tough to complain about PSU wrestling. Having said that, the last couple PSU teams dont remind me of Caels previous teams. Too many guys that dont get to their offense, mental mistakes at critical times etc. Could just be me. Just my observation
Totally agree. Michigan wrestling like we used too.

Kerk had a great game plan. Keep distance and keep shooting outside and use your quickness. He will definitely beat that Iowa kid at Nationals. Had it won If he simply goes to his knees the last 10 seconds….

Generalities about the teams. Lewan and the younger Amine couldn't have done any less in their matches. No so for Suriano and Massa, but Massa wrestled that way when he was in his first 5 years. Different wrestler now.

Except everyone said the same thing after the dual, “…..that’s OK, Kerk will not make the same mistakes and will beat him in the tournament” and what happened? More mistakes.

Is it fair to suggest that we saw pretty passive/conservative wrestling from PSU guys at 125, 149, 157, 165, and 285? To me, it didn't look much like a Cael coached team. I guess I was most shocked by Kerk's refusal to take shots.

Man, brutal for Kerkvliet, and Penn State.
A picture-perfect example of how defeat is snatched from the jaws of victory. Never saw anything quite like that in five-plus decades of following PSU wrestling. And one time is more than plenty. Experience teaches a dear school, but ...
