197 Quarters: #1 seed Max Dean vs. #8 seed Lou Deprez (Binghamton) (I'll use LD)

Need Dean to wrestle smart and advance. Bonus points would be a plus. I wonder if he ever faced Deprez while at Cornell?

Per 1
Lots of hand fighting, then LD in on a single, Dean with a whizzer, but LD gets the TD, 0-2. Dean out quickly, 1-2. LD shoots a head inside single, Dean sprawls, and a stalemate with 1:20 left. LD in on another low single, Dean scrambles, now Dean with a whizzer, and a stalemate with 46 sec. That was close. LD is getting to Dean's legs too easily. Dean nearly shot, nothing. Dean started to drop down but stopped Then he shoots with 4 sec left, blocked. End

Per 2
Dean takes bottom. LD throws in a boot. Dean sits out, LD nearly caught him and took him to his back, but nothing. Dean is flattened. Dean gets to his feet and he's out, 2-2. RT @ 1:05 for LD. Dean in on a single, they scramble, LD grabs a leg, wild scramble, and then OOB with 3 sec left. Wow End. RT @ 1:04 for LD

Per 3
LD takes neutral, so Dean needs a TD to work a bow and arrow. LD shoots, Dean sprawls, Dean working behind but LD has the ankle pretty well locked, Dean close but can't break that hold on the leg, 1 min left, and a stalemate with 45 sec left. PSU throws the brick. Hmm, I don't think they'll win this if they feel a TD should have been awarded. LD was fatiguing, so the video review helps him. Video review is taking a long time. A really long time. A really, really long time. Wow, a TD is awarded to Dean, 4-2. 1:07 left in the match. Dean works the RT under 1 min. LD finally up and out with 30 sec left, 4-3. OOB with 21 sec. LD shoots, sort of, and sort of again, he's exhausted. Stall warning on Dean. End. Dean with a 4-3 DEC.

Man, Dean sure is getting some calls in this tournament. Right or wrong, it's true, but great effort to put himself in that position.

285 Quarters: #4 seed Greg Kerkvliet vs. #12 seed Christian Lance (Nebraska) (I'll use CL)

Per 1
Nothing thru 1 min. Kerk shoots but they are OOB with 1:53 sec left. Kerk reaches, nothing. OOB with 1:19 left. Stall warning on Lance. Kerk with a head inside single, elevates the leg, and drops down for the TD, 2-0. Lance is quickly flattened along the edge. Lance looks to be crawling out. End. RT @ 40 sec for Kerk

Per 2
Lance defers, and Kerk takes bottom. Kerk with a roll and gets behind for the reversal, 4-0. OOB with 1:43 left. Caution on Lance. Kerk gets RT over 1 min. Stoppage with 1:13 left for blood time for Lance. On the restart, Kerk breaks down Lance and flattens him. Lance to his feet, but is returned. OOB with 13 sec left, and another blood stoppage for Lance. End. RT @ 2:19 for Kerk

Per 3
Lance takes bottom. And Kerk flattens him. Lance finally works to his knees, and back down. 1 min left. RT is locked. Lance to his feet and peels out with 28 sec left, 4-1. Kerk spins around and gets a TD on the edge, 6-1. End. With a lot of RT, it's a 7-1 DEC for Kerk

appears they are going to use 8 mats for consolations, so perhaps the wait for Berge's match won't be too long

Tom, any thoughts why Kerk didn’t play catch and release towards the end to get the major? It jest didn’t seem like he was going to be able to get back points….I realize it’s risk/reward. He could get caught and there you go.

I have no clue. The coaches always have a plan, so perhaps they felt there was a better chance of getting a turn than cycling through a catch and release.
