Don't like the trend right now. We should be up 3-4 runs and the Phils are letting the Pads hang around.

The Fightins had Bellatti warming up in the 4th inning, then Brogdon warming up in the 5th inning, then Eflin warming up after the 5th inning.

Eflin in to pitch the 6th inning.

Here's some more random thoughts. Don't take Ranger out after 63 pitches. Two hits a **** defense around him. Efflin has given up runs in all his post season outings.

Phils got lucky as Eflin gets Bell (in as a pinch hitter) to ground into a double play (4-6-3).

3-2, Phillies, heading to the bottom of the 6th

Here's a 6th inning random thought. Baseball is not like the other sports. There are so many ups and downs in these post-season games. The fans involved have upped their daily meds. I'm sure outside of the four cities left, no one cares.

wow, Castellanos looks terrible on the 2nd strike, but then hits a double to LF with 2 out. Come on Bohm.

So Rob takes out Ranger early and will burn the whole bullpen tonight. Does this game now become a must? Captain Obvious says yes!

Topper is definitely going for it.

You have to worry a bit about tomorrow's game, as that is going to be a bullpen game for the Phils. Then again, the Padres are likely throwing a bullpen game, so perhaps using several arms tonight isn't such a bad thing for the Fightins.

Johnson hangs a 2-1 breaking ball right over the heart of the plate and Hoskins looks at it. The next pitch he gets blown away.

Seranthony mows them down after Alvarado gave up a lead-off single (which wouldn't have been a hit if the shift wasn't on).

4-2, Phils, heading to the bottom of the 8th.

3 More Outs

Phillies are looking tough right now! I’m not sure if it’s Harper but this is not the same team I watched in August. ⚾️

Great move to take ranger out when they did. You can’t let him face machado and drury for a third time in that big of a game. Only reliever down for tomorrow is seranthony and will be a bullpen game for both teams as both starters are likely only going 3/4 innings. 3 from Falter, 2 from Syndegard, 1 from bellatti, 1 from eflin, 1 from Robertson, 1 from alvarado would be the ideal plan.

Baseball is a great game....the absolute best. So many intangibles last night. Beating Musgrove was huge in this series. The Phillies had to use the pen. It feels like every game in this series is as game 7. What a great ballgame last night....wow.

I agree. Also sets up for Wheeler on Sunday with 5 days rest, Nola on Monday if needed with 5 days rest and Ranger on Tuesday if needed with 5 days rest.

I think Topper knew how important it was to win game 3 at home in a series tied 1 - 1. Now the pressure is on SD to win one of the next two games to get back to San Diego.

Phillies know they HAVE to win 2 of 3 in Philly at the worst. So you win the games as presented to you. They won last night when the opportunity was there and Thomson navigated the game perfectly. It’s just the way the game is played now. Smoltz said it, you don’t allow pitchers to face the lineup three times. I had no issue with pulling Ranger, the only thing he could have maybe done different is Eflin two, but the lineup likely told him to go get Alvarado. So, he knew he had to get two from someone and given the magnitude of Game 3, he picked the right guy to get two from to win the game.

The biggest question I have for Thomson is Nola game 6 or game 7 with extra rest day assuming it’s 3-2 Philly after 5.

If this thing gets to 6, you pitch Nola. No doubt. Let tomorrow worry about itself!
Nola on 4 day rest v. extra day of rest have been very different. He is right now about 40 innings over last year and has also exceeded his career high at this point in innings. I think Nola has to tell you. It’s their makeup to always take the ball but I think it’s worth having a discussion.
