In hockey, the Swedish women just got a thorough A$$. BEATING. o_O at the hands of the Canadians. 11-0.
Feel like women's hockey is where women's soccer was a generation or two ago...only about 2 countries in the world care about it and invest in it, but we'll likely see that increase in the future and some day, there will be more competition.

Soon China will create a pro women's hockey league so they can buy some foreigners to play for them.

If that's what it takes to expand opportunities in women's hockey, then it's probably a good thing. I think I read at some point that the women's pro hockey league's players make something like 35k/year.

My favorite was when watching the china hockey game the other day they changed the foreigners names to a Chinese name for the announcers and on the jersey. So, unless you’re paying close attention (or they show a close up pic), you wont realize they aren’t Chinese.

I think around 13-14 of the 25 player team are foreigners who are not Chinese citizens but have been “nationalized” to skirt around that pesky issue. 🙄

Men’s Hockey final: USA 4, Canada 2

The USA was the faster team early, but from the 2nd period on, Canada stepped up and controlled possession much of the rest of the game. Still, the USA scored more goals, which matters. Strauss Mann was great in goal for the USA.

Rhythm Dance on USA Network now. Goes well with the morning coffee and cinnamon scone.

Just watched recorded game and agree with your analysis. Thought they would blow it after giving up short handed goal. Glad to see they are batting 100% on penalty killing. Mann was the man.

Seems like we're a pretty safe bet at this point to be the #1 seed heading into the bracket. The game against 8/9 should be manageable, but then it's a game against 4/5, which is likely either Canada or the loser of Finland/Sweden game. That's be a tough one, but we're in a better position than I would have expected heading into this thing.

From what I heard during the broadcast, the top four teams get a bye into the semis. That’s where the US is headed. The others play a first round game to see who pairs up with the top 4.

It’s a bye into the quarters…as the 1 seed, we’d meet the winner of the 8/9 game.

Suggestion for next Olympic Games. Instead of stacking guys on top of each other in the 2 man or 4 man luge, why not go ahead and make a coed combined event like the other sports. One luge and one skeleton. Winning time .69

Beat Germany and we'll be the #1 seed unless something crazy happens. The China game did wonders for our goal differential. Speaking of which, Canada can be the #4 seed but they'll need to overcome their lower goal differential against the Finland/Sweden loser. Canada plays China so that's a perfect game for them to run up the score. I look for Canada to put 10 in the net against China and their roster of foreigners.

USA 2, Germany 1, early 2nd

Germany challenges the goal unsuccessfully. Goal stands. USA goes on the power play due to the unsuccessful challenge. Interesting rule.

Germany kills the penalty. Still 2-1.

USA 2, Germany 1, 2nd intermission

USA starts the 3rd period with a full two-minute power play. Germany couldn‘t get possession after the penalty was called late in the 2nd. USA pulled the goalie to go 6-on-5 but couldn’t score before the period ended.

At full strength. Germany turned the puck over. Smith with the backhand goal in front of the net.

Nice. After the opening scrimmage against China, ours guys played two tough games. Looks like we'll get the winner of Germany/Slovakia. Canada will have to play China again. I don't know if that's good for them or not.

Weird how all Group A teams wound up on the same side of the bracket as did all teams from Group B.

Maybe this we’ll help then…

I blame her parents for this terrible decision. Her mother especially, unless her mother happens to be a member of the CCP, which I guess is possible. I just wonder if she has any idea what happened in 1989 in Tiananmen Square? Her mother knows, yet allowed her daughter to do this.

Very few people in China know anything about Tiananmen Square circa 1989. The government certainly prefers it that way and forbids discussion about the events. Gu is 18. I'll guess and say she was born when her mother was 22. That would make mom around 40 years old today. That would make her about 7 years old when Tiananmen Square happened. I wouldn't be shocked if her mother is woefully uninformed about what happened then. From what I gather, Gu's father hasn't been in her life for a long time so I doubt he's ever had the opportunity to discuss Chinese human rights with her.

Regardless, I don't get the animosity. Gu is walking on both sides of the fence and making a financial killing on both sides of the Pacific. Competing for China only solidifies her earning potential there since the commies are always looking for heroes to prove how great their political system is, even if one of those heroes wouldn't exist without the opportunities she received in the USA.

I'd never heard of Eileen Gu until I started watching the Olympics. I'll likely never see her again when the Olympics are complete. She can live her life as she sees fit. It has no effect on me whatsoever.

You “don’t get the animosity?” Surely you can understand that people wouldn’t be having the same negative reactions you’re seeing here if Gu was representing Sweden, say, or Ireland.

You stated sources of animosity.

Anyway, this thread is obviously supposed to be about sports.

It not just Gu. There are 7 Americans playing for China’s hockey team. One called it a ‘great honor’ to play for china. Another said it was an ‘amazing experience to put the china sweater on’. Gu dismissed China’s internet censorship when challenged on it. It’s just unreal.

Either they are absolutely clueless on who they are representing, or worse- they don’t care.

Look, the post I was responding to said her parents should have taught her better. I noted reasons why that wasn’t as simple as it sounds. Also, how many 18 year old Americans do you think know anything about Tiananmen Square? Give me all the crap you want. I stand by my post. And yes, I think China sucks.

USA dominated play, but Finland had a great scoring chance at the end of the period. Big save by the USA goaltender, Cavallini.

USA vs. Canada for the gold. I hate to say it, but I think Canada is too tough this time around. They beat the USA in the first round despite being outshot by a huge margin. Canada has scored piles of goals since then.

The story is expanding. Now 3 cardiac drugs (2 not officially banned) found in the system of a 15 year old. Her coach was accused of doping her skaters by another athlete in 2019.

And Russia will skate through this because the IOC and Court of arbitration for sport continually cave.

The IOC is sure it’s all just a misunderstanding.
