Even more o_O .

Men’s Hockey final: Slovakia 3, USA 2

WTF?
Just horrible. Led 2-1 until the closing minute. Gave up a goal to go into OT and then lost. Disappointing game by team USA.

That said, they looked a lot better than the women’s team does tonight. Not sure how the USA team made it to the gold medal game other than everyone else (sans Canada) sucks. ;). Now 3-1 Canada in the second period and it’s really not that close.

Shock in the women’s free skate. ROC’s Valieva, the favorite for gold, fell all over the ice. She‘s only 15, and the pressure of the Olympics and the doping scandal obviously got to her. You could see that she was distraught.

She finished 4th, meaning there will be a medal ceremony.

Funny how that worked out.

There's no reason to think that she was in on it, but it doesn't matter.

It matters to her, of course. If she didn’t know, she’s devastated and disillusioned by something out of her control. That’s horrible. She was supposed to win. That’s what she wanted. I can’t help but think that she was sabotaged by a stupid and selfish coach or trainer.

On the other hand, we could just assert that she knew and burn her down to the ground. o_O

😉

This young woman is the best figure skater, man or woman, I have ever seen. I agree that she is the best of all time. She did some quads (quads!) with her arms over her head, which makes it harder to spin as fast. She is the first woman to land a quad in the Olympics. And she did it at least twice in one short program. She is just as good, in terms of grace and form, as she is technically. She is miles above the rest of her competition.
I think the “Best ever” moniker was a little premature.

Mikelea falls again for a DNF in the combined. Was in 5th heading into slalom, her best event, and slid out. Head not in it for these games.

I get a call this morning from my brother and he asks what I think about this young girl getting busted for doping. I say, even if she didn't know, she tested positive, and shouldn't be allowed to compete. It's unfair, even if it's not steroids. Moreover, Russia has been doing this for years, and they keep doing it.

He says, 'that's exactly what I thought you'd say because that's what all liberals are saying on twitter.'

Nah, we get along great. But Jesus - this is from my kid brother who up until Joe Rogan and Steven Crowder had no interest in politics or politicians. Now, it’s in Marvel movies (Brie Larson sucks she’s too woke!), sports, video games, and everything else we talk about.

I was hoping Mikaela would have skipped these Olympics out of principle. Not that she would have needed to make a big deal about it, but just stay away.

My daughter, who is about the same age as Mikaela, happened to meet her at a corporate event a few years ago. Mikaela was as kind and gracious as anyone my daughter has ever met. I will be happy for Mikaela when she gets the hell out of China.

Knowing nothing about ice skating, has women’s figure skating become like women’s gymnastic, dominated by teenage girls? I remember being shocked to hear that the USA women’s gymnastics team this year were all 18 and over. I just think it is strange where a sport is set up that you are essentially over the hill at 20 where most other sports you are not in your prime until after 20.

Both sports value low levels of body fat and flexibility which are each easier to achieve before puberty is complete.

Yes, but I question Valieva’s culpability in this. She’s just 15. Did she know she was taking these substances, what they were, and why she was taking them?
The 2 US skater announcers sort of talked about this the other day. They said they began their drug testing around 12 years old and they were very aware of limitations of what they could take. They both talked about their moms having access to a phone line (? from US Olympic folks?) that they would call in anytime either got sick to see if they could give a certain cough medicine, etc.

I have a hard time believing the Russian skater (and her coaches/ family) didn’t know. She certainly should have been questioning once she was placed on 3 cardiac meds by the Russian officials.

Hoping not to turn this political, but what was liberal about your take? She had an unfair advantage via cheating, and should not compete. Where is the divide?

I see. This should be a fairly unified view, but not these days. Let's bail before this thread gets highjacked by an agenda (left or right). Thanks.

Yeah, gonna delete the text in my post since you were the only one who asked. I'm sure Bob will be back in no time with some updates!

I was flipping channels and happened to see Valieva's short program. The two US announcers (Lipinski and Weir, both former Olympians) felt Valieva should have been disqualified immediately. They added the fact she was allowed to skate pending further investigation was an insult to all the non-cheaters. During skating programs the announcers talk about the routine and point out the tricks being done by the skaters. Triple this, double that, etc. As Valieva was skating they didn't speak at all. Afterward as Valieva was skating off the ice, they said something along the lines of, "All we have to say is that was Kamila Valieva's short program". They were brutally honest about their feelings toward cheaters regardless of age.

My simple question is whether she knew she was taking three heart medications. Rhetorical, but a question.

Whether she new or not should be inconsequential to the required remedy of removal. Plausible deniability can not be sustained as a precedent.

The IOC representatives responsible for letting the circumstance blossom into the finals, should be removed from all future positions of athletic responsibility. I see no other future professional path for them except to become Big 10 football officials................

I’m not debating whether she should have been removed from the Olympics. She should have been removed to maintain integrity and in fairness to the other skaters. However, that doesn’t answer whether she knew or was a victim. As a 15-year-old, I am willing to consider that she didn’t know she was taking these heart medications.

The conclusion was great last night. Divas crying all over the place. The girl who cheated basically crumbled, the silver medalist was crying that she did not win the gold saying she did not want to go on the podium. Apparently she had the most difficult program, did well, and felt she got robbed. The bronze medalist was crying, but at least they were tears of joy. Who knows about the gold winner, she was walking around and nobody from her camp was even paying attention to her with all the focus on the other two Ruskies.

I heard this referred to as the signature event of the Winter Olympics which was interesting and something I never thought about. If true, it’s great considering that no other sport played by both sexes focuses on the women more than the men. Good for them.

I’d put Gymnastics in this same category

The drama and tears flying around last night was unreal.

An epic collapse by the favored skater caught doping, who then was treated like trash by her own coach as she came off the ice.

The second place skater crying and yelling that she was cheated and refusing to go on the podium.

The 3rd place skater was balling too (apparently it’s contagious).

The winner was left to flounder alone uncomfortably on camera and didn’t know what to do while all the drama was occurring.

I would love to see someone go back and translate everything that was going on. The favorite was devastated after her collapse and the minute she stepped off the ice her coach was berating her for her performance.

Even the IOC prez, who generally ignores bad news and pretends it doesn’t really exist, felt the need to rip the Russian coach’s behavior.

Last night took the gold for crazy. The Nancy Kerrington/ Tonya Harding drama now officially has the silver medal.

The silver medalist says she is never setting foot on the ice again given the vast technical differences in her and the gold medal winner’s program. She said something along the lines of “everyone has a gold but me”. The coach asked the girl who crumbled “why she didn’t fight”.

The winners were the announcers who sad they failed the one girl but that doesn’t dismiss the fact that she should never have been permitted to continue.

I’m not sure people really care about the Olympics the way they used to, but the whole thing looks terrible. From China nonsense to the outrageous political statements to this mess, they look like hypocrites and idiots. The IOC actually makes the NCAA look good.

I love it. This is the first Olympics I haven’t watched since 1972. It is so good to see this Olympics fail in communist China.

The Olympics hardly failed. They proceeded as expected with great competition. Although many felt Valieva should not have been allowed to compete, she didn’t medal, so there was a medal ceremony. This will drag on and the ioc will have to address it further, but the Olympics did not fail. The Olympics are a lot bigger than this one skater.

They will have to address the issue of failing drug tests. You can’t have a repeat of this. These idiots were actually going to prevent a medal ceremony. The only reason they did this was the likely result that Russia was going to sweep the medals. Just imagine if the ceremony was cancelled and a non Ruskie snuck in. These dopes were actually going to stiff a competitor who worked their whole life to stand on an Olympic podium. That’s horrible.

I saw PTI one day and Tony K. was laughing. He said you actually expect Russia NOT to cheat?! China should never be allowed to host again unless and until they agree for full transparency and agreement that they won’t censor any reporting. Pipe dream I realize but you can’t say it’s sunny out when it’s raining cats and dogs.

Let’s see what the TV ratings are for this sh!tshow. I expect and hope that this will be the lowest-rated Olympics in history.

The Blue course Wins the Gold!!! I've seen a few of these types of head to head races, one in person. While there always seems to be some small discrepancies between the courses I've never seen anything like what happened in these races. It was ridiculous.

If not for the traitor Gu, the US would have leap-frogged China to finish Top 3 in Gold Medals.
