Very well ... thanks for asking.

I generally keep details about my family (immediate or extended) off the boards. However, I'm going to make a bit of an exception today. My younger brother, at a routine annual exam this year, his doctor thought he heard a bit of a murmur, so he sent him to a cardiologist to get a test so that they'd have a baseline to compare it against over the years. Well, after the cardiologist tests, he found that he had a valve that was leaking, and also one blockage, so he'd need cardiac surgery.

The cardiac surgeon thought that he'd be able to repair the valve, but just in case he had to decide between a titanium replacement or a cow valve replacement. The surgeon also indicated that it was likely to be two bypasses to address blockages.

The surgery was today. My brother thought it was a good omen to have it performed on St. Patrick's Day. I got the report just as I was leaving near the end of Session III. The surgeon was able to repair the existing valve. During the surgery they determined that there were was a third blockage, so he ended up with a triple bypass surgery as well as a valve repair.

It was somewhat unsettling, as my brother ran track and cross country all during high school, and has been pretty active, athletically, most of his adult life. Plus, he probably weighs no more than 5-8 pounds above what he weighed when he graduated from college -- he's always been lean, and in good shape.

It appears that after a couple of months of rehab, he'll be in very good shape for the future.

I've known of many friends that underwent such surgery, but this was new to my immediate family. It's a lot easier to rationalize, and be confident about, when it's a friend than when it's your immediate family.

Anyway, in a great day of Penn State wrestling, I get the added bonus that my brother's cardiac surgery went very well.

Again, thanks for the kind thoughts.
Tom so glad things went well. I had atrial fibrillation for years and got it fixed in Jan 2022, been a life changer for me. Best wishes for your brother.

I'm not quite sure when I'll be home from the appointment I have tomorrow afternoon. Plus, I have a family member that is undergoing serious surgery tomorrow, so there's a chance that my schedule will be a mess. So to avoid any issues, I'm setting this up the night before. Please allow this thread to sit idle until after the conclusion of Session III.

Please use the thread for all pre-session, in-session, and post-session discussion for the Session IV of the 2023 NCAA Championships.

When:
March 16, 8:00 pm EDT

Where:
Bok Center, Tulsa, OK

TV:
ESPN

Video Streaming:
ESPN+. Please note that this is the only way to get access to multiple mats. In past years, this was offered on ESPN3 (free to those that were ESPN subscribers), but this year you must have ESPN+, which is a subscription service.

Audio Streaming:
The radio PBP, with Jeff Byers at the mic, will be streamed for free. The pre-Session portion of the broadcast will begin at 7:40 pm EDT, with the actual PBP of the matches taking place at 8:00 pm EDT. (LionVision indicates it's starting at 7:20. I think that's a mistake, but perhaps they will start 40 minutes before the Session.) You can access the audio stream at:

Team Scoring:
The best place to track the team scoring is the Penn State Wrestling Club web site. The link for the team scoring is:

https://www.pennstatewrestlingclub.org/content/tournament_team_score.php?id=29&type=team

PBP:
I should be be available for PBP for the entire session. @GregPickel will also be in the thread helping with PBP, and other content. (@GregPickel, I'll post something in this thread to let you know when I'm back and that I'm good to go for PBP.) Hopefully, several of you will also step forward and provide some analysis, or some comments on each match. As always, I remind you to please include the score for the match, or provide some context (wrestler, school, and weight class) beyond just "that's not a takedown." It also helps to give folks a heads up as to what mat a PSU wrestler will be wrestling on. You can usually get that info from Ironhead's audio PBP, from Penn State Wrestling's twitter account, or from TrackWrestling.
Tom....hope your loved one's surgery goes well. Thanks for all your work here.

we're only at 141, and this night already has worn me out. Some insane matches.

141 Semi: #6 seed Beau Bartlett vs. #2 seed Andrew Alirez (N. Colorado) (I'LL USE AA)

Here's hoping Beau opens things up on offense. AA is 26-0 on the season.

Per 1
Both guys being cautious, and not a lot of collar ties. AA shoots and gets a low single, he elevates and has BB dancing, and he trips him down for the TD, 0-2. BB to his feet, and returned. To his feet again, and walked OOB with 1:22 left. Beau to his feet, returned, up again, and out, 1-2. AA shoots, blocked. AA shoots, blocked. AA snaps down on the head, but the buzzer sounds. End. RT @ 34 sec for AA

Per 2
AA takes bottom. He works up, but Beau clamps down. AA works away at 17 sec, 1-3. Beau got poked in the eye so a short stoppage. BB with a semi-shot, nothing. AA does like to put his hands in the face. AA shoots a low double, they scramble, but AA gets behind for the TD, 1-5. Beau to his feet, and nearly out but the buzzer sounds. End RT @ 45 sec for AA

Per 3
Beau takes bottom. Beaut works up and hits a roll as he's returned, but AA stays with him, and they are OOB with 1:45 left. RT @ 1:00 for AA. Beau works up and he's out, 2-5. 1:40 left. Beau has some work to do. Beau reaches, nothing. 50 sec left. Beau working in, but not having much success. Stall warning on AA. Beau shoots, nothing. 10 sec left. End. With RT, it's a 6-2 DEC for Andrew Alirez.

I don’t know who Alirez wrestled in the quarterfinals, but it was a close match and Alirez pretty much held on in the end. Because of that match, I really felt Bartlett had a good chance of winning. Alirez certainly proved me wrong. He dominated that match.

Youngest dog is really into watching wrestling. HE is a wrestler himself, maybe looking for some moves to take down is 90 lb brother.

I wish I had a video of what our 65 vs 100 pound golden retrievers just did throughout the Bartlett match. I know the feeling.

149 Semi: #12 seed Shayne Van Ness vs. #1 seed Yianni Diakomihalis (Cornell) (I'll use Yianni)

SVN has his work cut out for him. Yianni is really, really tough. He (Yianni) looked less than his usual self earlier today in the quarterfinal, and after the 125 and 133 semis, who knows.

Per 1
SVN in on a single, they scramble, and they are neutral. Wild, and great skill by both guys. Stoppage for blood on SVN. They have to clean the mat and tend to him. SVN reaches, nothing. Yianni shoots, gathers a leg in, SVN sprawls and a stalemate with 1:27 left. SVN with a sloppy shot and nearly gets caught by a counter, but nothing. 1 min left. SVN reaches for an ankle, nothing. SVN has a low ankle, not much time, he nearly gets it but the buzzer sounds. Damn, 3-5 sec, and he had the TD.

Per 2
SVN takes bottom. He works up, and he's out in 14 sec, 1-0. Stalemate with 1:07 left. SVN shoots from center field, nothing. 30 sec left. SVN snaps the head down on a counter, nothing. End. RT @ ?? (around 14 sec) for Yianni

Per 3
Blood time for SVN. Yianni takes bottom. he works up, sits out, and he's out in about 6 sec, 1-1. RT not a factor. Does SVN have more 3rd period magic. SVN in on a double, and he gets the TD, 3-1. Yianni out quickly, 3-2. Yianni shoots, nothing. He shoots again and gets a single and gets the TD, 3-4. And now he tilts SVN and is getting swipes. Ref is holding 4 NF. 3-8 after the awarding. 20 sec left. End. It's an 8-3 DEC for Yianni

so close by Yianni. He tried to hit a roll on Yianni's only TD, and Yianni didn't let him get away.

You should be embarrassed saying this. God hurting a kid because he didn’t come to Penn State? I know you have trouble with reality and the truth - but this is too far, even for you.
True. Sorry nothing personal. Great semi’s here for all kids.
