I wouldn’t be shocked to learn that he broke ribs in the semis last night.
ESPN reported it is a psychological issue & he just couldn’t go today. Contrast Max Dean, also a defending champion who was knocked off, wrestled his butt off & walked away thankful for his coach & what the sport did for his life. No way anyone should feel sympathy for Spencer. He was king for years & enjoyed the limelight for much longer than most wrestlers. Losing is part of the sport, and life. True character is displayed in hard times. He has tarnished an otherwise great legacy,

We should all cut Spencer Lee and his mom some slack. He was 5 feet below the summit he had been preparing to climb his whole life since he was probably 5 or 6 years old. My heart broke for both of them. It's unfortunate the thing with his mom was caught on video - I am sure she won't feel great about that, but I certainly understand.
My heart brakes for her and Lee. Unless you have had a child go through multiple knee injuries resulting in the inability to compete (I have) you don’t understand. You can’t even come close to understanding the pain mom is feeling and the level of warrior Lee is to keep coming back. Be classy PSU. This is some of the worst pain a child and parent can endure.

As with any program, there are a few question marks, but if Howard comes back at full strength then it makes the transition a lot easier. 133 and 197 will have new faces. Who that may be, remains to be seen. RBY and Dean will be missed. If Levi can’t hold 157 and bumps up, then 157 is a question mark also. The 5 in the finals, along with Beau and SVN all return next year barring any unforeseen events.
Thanks LB. Hard to keep up with, with the Covid years and redshirts, etc

174 Cons. Semis

- Chris Foca (Cornell) defeats Nelson Brands (Iowa), 7-2

- #3 seed Mekhi Lewis (VT) defeats #5 seed Dustin Plott (Okla. St), 8-2
Max Dean to ESPN, fighting through tears and sporting a gnarly black eye:

"I didn't quite get what I came here for, but I'm proud of my effort and really proud of our team. I'm sad it's done. It's meant a lot to me. Cael Sandeson is a leader. I know I needed him in my life. I'm just really grateful for him and everybody. I'm just so lucky. I don't know what my plans are. I'm just excited to watch my teammates tonight. I love wrestling. I'm grateful for everything it's done for me. I'm not rushing to get out of it. But, we'll see."
Difference between character of psu and iowa. Dean wrestles and was greatful for doing so. Kudos to Dean and Sanderson

@GregPickel -- it looks as though Bartlett and SVN will be wrestling at the same time (damn), on Mats 3 & 4 respectively. How about we switch off from the semis, and you take Bartlett and I take SVN?

When the mother destroys her glasses in reaction, you can't be surprised by the reaction of the son.

Agree with staying classy but it’s not “some of the worst pain” either can endure. Kids and parents get cancer and die.

Dude lost a wrestling match and remains an icon in the sport. Dreams being crushed is legit painful but you absolutely have to keep perspective. We’ve learned that wrestling is the MOST important thing the Lees’ lives. Problematic priorities. However, we all often get our priorities screwed up. So, yeah, mercy is probably best here.

But I will still enjoy any and all memes of the mom’s break down. Lol.

5th place matches:

149: #4 seed Caleb Henson (VT) over #8 seed Max Murin (Iowa), 12-3

174: #11 seed Nelson Brands (Iowa) over #5 seed Dustin Plott (Okla. St), 4-2, SV
Henson is really good. I’ve watched him a few times this year. He’s pretty polished for a true freshman. He has some really big upside in the future.

Words are important. They provide context. I said “some of the worst pain”, not the worst pain. Death is worse. Death to cancer is even harder. I have lived that pain too. I suspect the adversity Lee faced will shape him into a truly successful person in his life. The way he came back from serious injuries repeatedly is something to respect. It takes a true warrior - mentally and physically. Lee and his mom get a pass. Again, stay classy PSU. It is a really bad look to criticize Lee for the MFF.

There is much worse pain a parent can endure than their precious baby Losing a match. Mom acted out like a five year old yesterday and Spencer decides to take all the benefits of being in the program without showing up to support. It’s my basketball and so I am out of here.

If his injuries were so severe he could have optioned not to participate. Lots of kids injure out of their athletic careers, lots. Deal with it. It happens. Stay classy. Respect your teammates, coaches and fans. Get therapy if you need it.

141 pound third place match: Beau Bartlett vs. Lachlan McNeil, North Carolina

First period
Bit of a feeling out period to start. They've come together a couple times but no shots yet. McNeil is one long 141-pounder. It's a scoreless first.

Second period
McNeil is down first. Beau starts a ride and he's nearing a minute in time. McNeil does roll through though and gets out. BB only has 59 seconds in riding time. They're neutral the rest of the way and McNeil leads 1-0.

Third period
BB down. He's out quickly. It's 1-1. McNeil now in on a single leg but Bartlett counters and gains control for a takedown as he rides out on the side with 40 seconds left. BB riding hard with 25 seconds left to wrestle. He rides out the period.

Beau Bartlett finished third by beating Lachlan McNeil of North Carolina, 4-1.

149 3rd/4th Match: #12 seed Shayne Van Ness vs. #3 seed Kyle Parco (ASU) (I'll use KP)

Per 1
Both guys active off the whistle. KP working underhooks, nothing. Nothing thru 2. SVN shoots, then KP counters and gets a leg, and gets behind him but nothing awarded and then SVN frees his leg and gets behind for the TD. That was great wrestling. 2-0. KP to his feet, lifted, and returned. End. RT @ 22 sec for SVN

Per 2
KP takes bottom. He's up quickly, returned, up again, and SVN lets's him go, 2-1. KP tries a high crotch, blocked. Lots of tie ups late in the period. End. RT @ 32 sec (I think) for SVN

Per 3
SVN takes bottom. He works up and he's out in 8 sec, 3-1. SVN in on a single, they scramble, and SVN gets the TD, 5-1. KP nearly out but they go OOB with 1:03 left. KP up and out, 5-2. 40 sec left. KP sort of tries a throw, nothing. SVN in on a single but KP sprawls, nothing. 15 sec left. KP tries a headlock/cement mixer, loses it and SVN falls on top for the TD, 7-2. End

The #12 seed takes Third Place.

Way to go, Shayne Van Ness!!!

The performances and improvement of guys like Beau and SVN is what keeps the PSU train rolling. Both guys were imperative to team success this weekend. They both improved and matured dramatically over the course of this year. Both wrestled above seed. Great job by both and by the coaching staff.

Maybe Lee should have remained “classy “…. It’s not like he never won it. Big contrast to Max. It’s a sport, perspective would help.

Year in, year out, our guys bring it. They never seem to be satisfied. Must be the right mix of talent, mentality, talent development, and coaching.

3rd place matches:

157: #4 Franek (N. Dakota St) vs. #5 Humphreys (Lehigh)
Humphreys wins, 8-0

165: #5 Q. Monday (Princeton) vs. #11 C. Amine (Michigan)
Monday wins 3-2

174: #3 M. Lewis (VT) vs. #4 C. Foca (Cornell)
it goes to SV, 1-1
it goes to TB, still 1-1. Lewis out after 18 sec. Foca out in 14 sec
Foca wins by 4 sec in RT, 3-2

184: #2 T. Hidlay (NC State) vs. #5 K. Romero (Ohio St)
it goes to SV, 1-1
Romero nearly with a TD as the buzzer sounds, and they are going to an official review
TD awarded, so Romero wins 3-1 in SV

A lot of wild action in the above

Great Tournament. The fans who have been saying we need 8 All American's have been proven right, finally.

SVN and BB wrestled really really well this weekend. This should give them a dose of confidence heading into next year. They have all the skill and the conditioning. Really thrilled for them.
