That's it for the wrestling in Session V.

Nothing, nothing, nothing to complain about concerning the PSU wrestlers.

Added bonus that there was a lot of great wresting involving other wrestlers, for those that love the sport.

Rest up, and get ready for the finals (Session VI) tonight at 7 pm EDT

Max Dean to ESPN, fighting through tears and sporting a gnarly black eye:

"I didn't quite get what I came here for, but I'm proud of my effort and really proud of our team. I'm sad it's done. It's meant a lot to me. Cael Sandeson is a leader. I know I needed him in my life. I'm just really grateful for him and everybody. I'm just so lucky. I don't know what my plans are. I'm just excited to watch my teammates tonight. I love wrestling. I'm grateful for everything it's done for me. I'm not rushing to get out of it. But, we'll see."

I love this quote! Total class.

149 3rd/4th Match: #12 seed Shayne Van Ness vs. #3 seed Kyle Parco (ASU) (I'll use KP)

Per 1
Both guys active off the whistle. KP working underhooks, nothing. Nothing thru 2. SVN shoots, athen KP counters and gets a leg, and gets behind him but nothing awarded and then SVN frees his leg and gets behind for the TD. That was great wrestling. 2-0. KP to his feet, lifted, and returned. End. RT @ 22 sec for SVN

Per 2
KP takes bottom. He's up quickly, returned, up again, and SVN lets's him go, 2-1. KP tries a high crotch, blocked. Lots of tie ups late in the period. End. RT @ 32 sec (I think)

Per 3
SVN takes bottom. He works up and he's out in 8 sec, 3-1. SVN in on a single, they scramble, and SVN gets the TD, 5-1. KP nearly out but they go OOB with 1:03 left. KP up and out, 5-2. 40 sec left. KP sort of tries a throw, nothing. SVN in on a single but KP sprawls, nothing. 15 sec left. KP tries a headlock, loses it and SVN gets the TD, 7-2. End

The #12 seed takes Third Place.

Way to go, Shayne Van Ness!!!
SVN is an outstanding scrambler….Some insane wrestling in that 3rd place match. I’m confident with a great off season he and BB will be National Champions.

Wish I had $1 every time I heard “resolite” the past few days. Could take my wife out for a great dinner . Tip included.

The Iowa board and two supposed "insiders" are speculating its bad. I don't if the two are legit or not as I'm not over there often. I really hope it isn't a reoccurrence of one or both knees that derails his international aspirations. Sad way to end a career for a special, special talent.

My heart brakes for her and Lee. Unless you have had a child go through multiple knee injuries resulting in the inability to compete (I have) you don’t understand. You can’t even come close to understanding the pain mom is feeling and the level of warrior Lee is to keep coming back. Be classy PSU. This is some of the worst pain a child and parent can endure.
A question we'll never know the answer to: Would Lee have wrestled this morning if Iowa still had a real shot at the team title tonight?

I just don't have alot of sympathy for how he, or his mother, handled the adversity of not only losing, but also getting decked, in a match he very much expected to win.

I had matcast on most of these sessions. Shane Sparks was starting to get on my nerves. I like him, but yes on the resolite thing. And he completely ignored every match whenever Murin was wrestling. Including when there were two championship matches going and Murin was already in consolations. Was really annoying. End of rant

Ahhh, horseshit! Real pain is losing a child to cancer, or a parent. Don’t give this “he lost a wrestling match / worst pain ever”. I am not saying go make fun of her, but, put things in perspective and have some maturity

Yeah, he's not great. He even asked some weird questions of Robles.

damn, where was my invite? That sounds delicious. Alas, you're up in that cold corner of the Commonwealth. ;)

Enjoy. Sounds like a good meal to enjoy in advance of the Finals
A pork loin and a beef brisket. Will smoke during this round ( 2 hrs ) then wrap and continue for another 4. Should be ready to eat around 5.

Call it a first place feast. Going on beer run now, taking pop along. At 91, he just likes getting out of the house.
Not sure you'll make weight for tonight!

I lost count. Did Iowa win just 1 match today?

hmm, let's go through their matches and figure it out (as I don't know the answer):

125: Spencer Lee MFF his 2 matches

149: Max Murin lost his Consolation Semi and then lost the 5th place match

174: Nelson Brands lost his Consolation Semi, and then won his 5th place match

197: Jacob Warner lost his Consolation Semi, and then won his 5th place match

285: Tony Cassioppi won his Consolation Semi, and then lost his 3rd place match

So including the MFFs, that would be

Iowa went 3-7 in Session V

I'm with @fairgambit, and feel that Spencer is owed the benefit of the doubt until we know more details. That said, this tweet addresses one of the core things said against Spencer in this thread:

That's good to hear. I was beginning to wonder if he'd even show up on the podium tonight. I'm gonna assume he'll be there.

I get working through injury is tough on everyone. But he was healthy enough to be competing just like everyone else. Losing a wrestling match isn't even close to being the worst pain a child and parent can endure. The problem with being extremely successful is not knowing how to accept defeat. I wouldn't be shocked if there was a wrestler somewhere in the tournament who battled back from a serious injury then went two and out. I doubt he or his parents threw a hissy fit.

All the best to Lee if he sustained an injury. But if he was on the mat, he felt he was fit to compete.

I don’t know if it was “unfortunate” as they were showing his mom & family all tournament long. It’s unfortunate what her post-match antics were. I get the disappointment, I don’t get the immaturity of what she did.
I see your point but she was upset that her son’s dream was crushed and she has been there through the entire career seeing s as lol of the work , the injuries, the setbacks and the wins .., it was a private moment of frustration and heartbreak that happened to be caught on camera … personally I would buy her new glasses and tell her she did great raising a champion warrior who went out on his shield on this day !!

330 wrestlers took to the mats on Thursday. Only 10 will come away with the ultimate prize - national champion. Therefore 320 more or less will come away not achieving their goal. Some on here have asked that we stay classy. I agree. I also remember another hardworking guy who laid on the turf at Kinnick Stadium with his season ending injury as the home crowd booed. I don't want to be "just like the folks in Iowa." Spence is a PA kid who made a decision as a young man and decided not to wrestle in his home state. Perhaps he will now reflect on his career and wonder if he made the right decision both when he made his college choice and last night when he decided not to wrestle today. His Mom will also need to dial back her disappointment as there is definitely more to life than your kid's glory.

I’m sorry but if Spencer Lee won yesterday he would be wrestling today for the NC. So all the benefit of the doubt talk is truly disingenuous. He didn’t get magically hurt at the end of the match he got caught in a crazy good move. He didn’t limp off etc.
