Rapinoe's humiliation was well-earned.

But one thing really stands out to me. I only have watched brief portions of various women's World Cup games up until the Sweden game, but the level of play is really poor in general for all teams. I can see why boys high school teams can dominate play against the best women in the world. The skill levels are similar, but the boys are bigger, faster, and stronger.

The women soccer's team has had amazing accomplishments this decade and had won the last 2 women's world cups-the US men have never won 1. Plus they have strongly contributed to the growth of girls/women's soccer in the US. That being sad, this team was not particularly good. In the 4 games I watched I never saw a WOW play, the exceptional goal that only the elite players make. Alex Morgan and others had numerous chances and in the last 3 games, got 1 goal total. That just does not cut it-room for error is so little if you can not score. And missing the net in 3 goals in the shootout-with chances to win-just does not cut it. Athletes are only at their prime for so long-it is tough getting there and staying there can be tougher. US soccer needs a total talent infusion-from the coaching staff to the players. Players like Morgan, Rapinoe, and a few older players sure had a great run and again won 2 consecutive World Cups- a great accomplishments. Now it is time for the older players to find other role-as coaches, ambassadors, or to move onto some other area of their life.
We are fortunate to have elite women athletes in our country-many in basketball, katie Ledecky and a few others in swimming, Biles.Lee in gymnastics and hopefully in the next few years we see the emergence of new young elite women soccer players. My son-a soccer buff, said we had a few women stars injured such as Mallory Swanson, so hopefully we will see a new wave of players as a new women's team emerges in the next year or 2 as they get ready for the 2027 World cup. And hopefully the major league women's league-which has several former PSU players-does well in US.

At my age, I need my beauty sleep. Just finished watching my dvr'd game.

Ignoring the remarks about men's level of play vs. women's, this felt like a title fight. Should the USA have won in regulation? Maybe, but credit Musovic for the saves she made. Just remember that she made no saves in the pk shootout.

There were times in the match that I thought the Swedes were going to score, but much credit to the USA back line.

The Kelly O'Hara goal post clank reminded me (hindsight) of the extra time clank in the last group stage match that enabled the USA to get to the knockout round.
Karma is a b****.

The disappointment here is this team showed their talent and ability in this match. Had they displayed more of this, they don't play the #3 team in the world until next week. Group stage is about winning to position yourself in the elimination rounds.

Au Revoir, Rapinoe. Your absence on the roster and on the field will be a pleasant change.

I would like to close with my admiration for Swedish beauty. Throw flags all you want, I am clueless on adding pictures here.

Rapinoe’s 15 minutes are finally up. What a fitting end and it was a scud. She will now be remembered as the Scott Norwood of soccer.
I love the US and any team that represents us, and hate that we lost. If anyone was gonna miss a PK when it mattered most, I'm glad it was her. Self-serving POS. Never liked her look at me anti-american attitude. You know what they say, Karma is a B*****. Now maybe the team will be able to focus on soccer.

Of course now the talk is that the rest of the world is catching up to the US in women’s soccer…that kind of destroys the US women’s claim that they deserve more money. On the island of one arm men, the two armed man is king, but put him on an island of two armed men, and he’s not worth quite what he thinks he’s worth. Now they get a taste of what the men’s team has been battling forever.

Rapinoe had no business replacing Morgan. I thought we played a strong match. Their goalie had to make diving save after save. Unfortunately our ladies couldn't get 1 by her. Hats off to Sweden.

One man’s opinion: this was always going to be a tough World Cup for the USWNT. Their championship roster got old and they had a weird mix of past-it players (ex: Rapinoe) holding on too long and inexperienced youth not quite ready for a tournament of this magnitude.

Their prior success is the hang up. Had they not won the last 2 cups, then we wouldn’t be as upset as we are today.

When I saw the sub board flash with a 13, I was like, 'WTF'. How do you take out one of the best scorers in the world (even though she hadn't been playing like it this tournament), especially when PKs are a distinct possibility (yes I know she missed one)? Rapinoe was playing off of her reputation from the tournament 4 years ago. She was dreadful against Portugal and brought nothing to her performance today. Her 2 corner kicks had zero chance of creating any danger. I also couldn't understand why they didn't have a way to have Rodman AND Williams on the field at the same time. That would have been a lot of speed on the flanks to stretch the field. I heard Rodman was battling illness so that tempered my rage when she came out of the game midway thru 2nd half.

But hey, they got beat by a hot goalie today. As someone said above, you don't f around in group play then you don't have to face this elite matchup so soon. And no surprise that people want to play politics and bring up the equal pay situation. I just smh at those people.

Good for Sweden. Now clean out some of the piss poor attitudes on US team.

Poor substitution IMO.
Poor substitution? Maybe the starters score goals and you don't need to bring on a player who hasn't missed a pk in 6 years. Had 3 key offensive players been healthy there wouldn't have been a Rapinoe at this WC, but this thread gets casual fans who don't much and they sure do talk a good game. Morgan, Ertz, and Rapinoe all had a good run for the USWNT, Swanson and others will hopefully step up as the attack cannot finish currently. Swanson in particular was a huge scratch from this team. They played well enough to win in regulation, but Sweden's keeper was probably the WOTM. This team was already in transition so this will force it further along.

A few key injuries kind of forced the hand of some players hanging on and sticking around IMO. To be honest this was the best match they played in the tournament, but ran into a keeper who was standing on her head. I see people talking about one person who came in extra time as the problem here....and in fact didn't really play more than 20 minutes in each match. Williams had her best match and Rodman too, but they still need to finish. Hopefully Swanson returns to form and stays healthy as they have some talent, but Morgan who is America's sweetheart kind of gets the free pass. 4 goals in 4 matches....3 against the lowest seed.....so they need to inject something new from the top down.

One of the happiest days I have had in months.

A bunch of privileged US women, with huge financial and other advantages, gets tossed in the round of sixteen.

IDGAD.

Winninh the womens World Cup is like being recognized as the tallest midget.

I don't read this board for intellectual enlightenment. I usually look for sarcasm and the weather report. Now that there is no longer any weather I have stayed for the sarcasm.
