We beat OSU every year and lose to Michigan every year.

And why salaries are going up so much. These guys also get multi-year contracts so they aren’t walking away empty handed.Seriously, if I were a College football coordinator, I would live out of a Winnebago, because thanks to NIL and unrealistic expectations of fans, one subpar season and you're fired even with only one year in a job. That has got to be the most unsecured job anyone can have right now in the workforce.

Eric "Public" Bienemy no longer with the Bruins.....

shocker!
That said, paying people more money doesn't make them more competent. And why salaries are going up so much. These guys also get multi-year contracts so they aren’t walking away empty handed.
Big $ sports is a results driven business. Gone are the days of success with honor (for the most part).
That said, paying people more money doesn't make them more competent.
Compensation for everything from Coaches to Admins in big $ college sports (such as FBS football) has gone up so incredibly high for one reason (well, maybe one big reason, with several subsets). The reason:
Revenue to big $ college sports programs - in the form, primarily, of TV revenue - has gone up by crazy levels. In an environment where:
The labor force was free (and is still miniscule costs)
The accountability (fiscally) was near zero
People want to "win" - and barring any more taxing efforts to try to achieve success it has largely led to "let's spend more" culture, as if spending more = more wins. Of course, it doesn't - but it does lead to quicker dissatisfaction (and more turnover on the merry-go-round) when it doesn't
Money has been slathered profusely in: Bells and Whistles, Swollen Personnel Head Count Levels, and Ginormous Comp for the various Chieftans (coaching and admin).
It is what it is.
If more $ spent does not buy something of more value, what do you have?
If only.... we would have college athletic departments curing cancer and rendering world peace. You get what you pay for.
Every time there is movement within the coaches who are on the all-time wins list I text my PSU friends. When Saban retired, Mack Brown was the next active coach on the list. Now that Brown has been fired and it being highly unlikely that he gets another coaching job, 69 year old Kirk Ferentz and his 214 wins is next on the list. If he continues to win 8 games a year at Iowa (his current average--rounded up, mind you), then he will pass Joe Paterno's mark of 409 victories sometime in the 2050, when he is 95.Youth movement! Mack was 73 and Bill is only 72. Wouldn't Stephen make more sense?
@s1uggo72 should know more of the story, but there were rumors/reports during the season that Marshall was looking to move on from Huff. Colleges rarely allow coaches to head into an offseason without a contract when they plan to retain them.
Jim its like 'as the world turns' around Huntington these days. No one saw this year coming. and it was going to be easy to let Huff go. But they have played very well.Wow, I’ve never composed a post like this. Damn, you hit that ball a mile.

If you are referring to Jason Beck's wife...There must be a law somewhere requiring football coaches to have beautiful wives.

Well hang in there @s1uggo72 It was a very good year and the off the field stuff hasn't seem to bother them. I don't know anything about Tony Gibson from over at State (about 20 miles away). I don't pay much attention to NC State athletics (seems like noise each year and nothing important ever happens).Huff and the powers to be at Marshall are having a hard time playing in the same sand box. Supposedly after Huff's first year he made no bones about chasing the Duke job. and then, Depending on who you believe, after Marshall beat ND, they approached Huff with an extension (his second yr of a 4 yr deal) which Huff turned down. They approached him again and he turned them down again. Then in his third year they beat Va Tech, they tried to extend him, to which he turned them down. By the end of the year, the train went off the tracks, and Huff approached them about an extension, to which MU said we will see. At that time MU only real QB portaled out. Huff made a statement along the lines of , 'he hates it here, the fans hate him, he hates the town etc and I dont blame him'. Which was not the best way to phrase things to say the least . So he went into his 4th yr basically as a prove it year. MU didnt really have a QB coming back (other than Chad Pennington son who Huff hates) but he got 2 from the portal that couldnt make it elsewhere. Early they lost a game they should not have lost to GA Southern Had a 20+ pt lead with 7 minutes to go, and managed to lose it by putting the ball on the game like 3 times, and I think were then surprised by an on side kick that my wife saw coming. but after the first 4 game, they got on a roll and havent lost since. and they have done well. Again depending on who you believe, about mid year, they (MU)approached him again and he turned them down again (not enough $$ for AC etc) to which MU basically threw their hands up. So here we are today. The main players are the AD a feckless nothing from Pitt, and the President Brad Smith , former CEO of Intuit (you know Quicken and stuff) and a local boy. Seems I think Brad (as he is preferred being called) has done some negotiations in the past . again depending on who you believe, the BOG of governors met Wednesday and authorized Brad to negotiate a contract, but for whom? Huff? Tony Gibson DC at NCST and a wv boy. again in theory Brad and Huff meet today , so we shall see
Huff has always acted like he did not want to be in Huntington. His wife Jessica (former PSU pentathlete) expresses those same feeling but stronger. Before the season she resigned as girls basketball coach at a local HS just to cut ties and be ready to move.
so I dont know. Huff now says he wants to be here another 5-6 years. Was Southern Miss just some kind of leverage that backfired? again IDK.
