A question for those who don't want Clemson in the SEC

It has at least been discussed that we could lose the Clemson game upon going to a 9-game conference schedule (see the 3rd question to Beamer in this recent interview: https://247sports.com/LongFormArtic...e-changes-expectations-205599506/#205599506_4)

So, the question: Do you oppose Clemson to the SEC even if it means the end of the series or would you grudgingly accept them into the SEC for the sake of preserving the series?

I don't want them in the SEC ever, even if it means we don't play them. Besides, they are not going to join any other conference until 2036. They are locked into the ACC with the exit fee and GOR agreement they were stupid enough to sign.

Yes. Keep them out at all costs.

Until 2006 we only had 3 non conference games a year and Clemson was always one of them. It really shouldn’t be an issue if that we’re to happen again.

I know our season will be harder with a 9th SEC game instead of another FCS opponent, but would be ok with it if push came to shove.

I don’t want to see clemson in the SEC ever, but say (and bear with me) the SEC didn’t survive. Say the NCAA falls and a new system is started, I would be ok with being in the same conference as clemson then.

However I don’t want things to change. Let us stay in the SEC. Clem can go wherever else. Regardless of conferences, we still play each other every year

But the question is, would you be ok sacrificing the Clemson series in if meant keeping them out of the SEC?

A lot of give and take on both sides of that outcome. I’d say keep the series and let them in if that was the only way.
Benefits include things like getting to play baseball and basketball later in the season and Clemson getting some fair competition across the board.
Drawbacks include watching them get the boost that inevitably comes simply by having the name SEC

I'd sacrifice Clemson every single time if it meant opposing them in something they wanted. Leave them in the ACC to wither away! No SEC lifelines.

I really don't see Carolina dropping Clemson even with a 9 game SEC schedule, so I don't see the OP's question as anything beyond message board conversation.

Well, it was something Shane Beamer was asked about in an interview, so it goes beyond message boards.

It seemed like a media member trying to generate content in the offseason, but I easily could be wrong. If Carolina dropped Clemson because of a 9 game SEC schedule, that would be really embarrassing.

I agree it’s embarrassing but some rivals have done just that due to conference expansion in the past. Texas and Texas A&M stopped every year after TAMU joined SEC. BYU Utah stopped every year after Utes went to Pac12.

They have taken great advantage of a cup cake schedule and now they want to switch to the SEC because they now see the long term consequences.

True, but I think our situation is a little different from those. With A&M/Texas, there was a lot of bad blood with the way A&M left the Big 12. With BYU/Utah, they've played every year other than 2014 and 2022. I don't know enough about the two schools to have any idea if they'd want to continue the series once BYU joins the Big 12.

With Carolina and Clemson, conference membership is stable. The only change is an additional conference game, and even that shouldn't matter with three other SEC teams playing an annual rivalry with an ACC school (Florida, Georgia, Kentucky). It would be different, possibly, if those other schools didn't also have those rivalries.

It is what they want. We should never help Clemson get what they want. They would get out of the ACC so fast your head would spin. Don’t want to drop the rivalry but I would rather do that than give them SEC millions of dollars. NO!!!

The only one of those rivalries that would be comparable to ours in terms of difficulty would be Florida/FSU.

I wasn't comparing difficulty. I'd agree that ours is by far the hardest. I was pointing out that other schools having SEC/ACC rivalry matchups makes it simple to continue ours. There would be no need to stop playing because of the conference expanding to 9 games; it would be solely because the university decided it didn't want to play clemson anymore.

I think you got your answer, Opie.

Yes. I fully understand the opposition to Clemson in the SEC is a purely emotional response with no factual support whatsoever. Kind of like our 18 month old refusing to eat some new food we know she'd actually love but she won't eat it just because of how it looks. I was just curious how deep the emotional response is. Not a surprising result in the least. Fans are emotional.

As far as terminating the series, I think it depends on the permanent matchups. If we end up with Bama & UGA as permanent SEC opponents, then we should cancel it. The goal is not to beat Clemson. The goal is to compete in the SEC and go to a playoff. In that scenario we're just hurting ourselves and help Clem. We should not work to preserve a rivalry game at the detriment of our program.

There was an article yesterday about maybe Clemson and some other ACC schools bolting the ACC and forming a new conference. I did not read it thoroughly or well because I had to prepare for outpatient surgery this morning at the hospital, which I just got back from. A quick glance at the article indicated that neither SEC nor BIG membership was an option at this time. So, there's that.

The table already provided that shows league payouts/year is not an emotional response that is lacking in facts. The fact is, many of us would enjoy an annual conference payout that is 2x ($50MM) greater than what CU is getting.

The idea that you might want to preserve a rivalry just for the sake of it is the emotional response that is lacking in facts. I think you've been spending too much time with your 18 month old.

Thanks for the chart and factual explanation as to why no sane and logical USC fan wants CU in the SEC. This should be required reading for any SEC school.

If money = wins, why aren't Texas and A&M winning titles year in and year out?

Furthermore, why has all that SEC money not made one lick of our difference in our overall win percentage since joined the conference?

Our fans conveniently overlook the fact that our own track record after joining the SEC destroys any "SEC boost" conspiracies.

And why hasn't it lead to a better winning percentage vs clemson?

Imo, the money isn't as important as getting clemson to lose more games, and that's not happening in the acc.

You speak logic, Mr Spock. I have already said while I have mixed feelings about it, them joining would not bother me, and there are upsides to that. As I know you do as well, I understand the animosity to them from fellow Gamecock fans.

Yes. Virtually nothing about our on-field situation has changed since we joined the SEC.

And, yes, stick Clemson with 3-4 losses every year in the SEC.

Clemson would drop USC like a hot potato if it were in their best interest. Proof of this was when we left the ACC and they screwed us. I would do what is in the best interest of USC and if that means dropping the orange rednecks then by all means drop them.

If the ACC schools are such a draw why is the league dying the slow death? Let clemson join the big 10 with nc and va. The arrogance of the all of those folks.

I feel certain that clemson diverts money from their other sports to keep pace with us, UGA etc on funding football. The extra SEC money would go to their other sports. The argument that SEC would help their recruiting is offset by their recruiting now being boosted by having practically an easy road to the playoffs through the ACC. And if anyone thinks clemson would pile on conference wins in the SEC like they do in the ACC is just WRONG. Playing the likes of UGA, Tennessee, Florida, Alabama, LSU, Auburn and now Texas and Oklahoma is not the same as playing an ACC conference schedule. It's not close. Put yourself in Dabo's shoes: would you want to play an SEC schedule?

You can't cancel series. It is required by state legislation that was passed years ago!
