Of course Lupert & Dumbly may add a twist of lemon and sugar in their selection of an A/E firm and construction company.
🥺
Don't forget fea$ability $tudie$. 😉

"When the proposed building was introduced in 2019 and the board appointed Bohlin Cywinski Jackson as architect, the estimated cost was $113 million. The project, which also includes money for the Oswald Tower demolition, primarily will be funded by $73.2 million in borrowing and $40 million in state capital funds, as well as capital reserves."

Once you're "qualified," you're in and can set whatever price you want. Don't all best in practice private businesses work that way?

Sounds like there is no donor support for the .12 billion dollar Liberal Arts palace

Maybe donors are smart enough to not throw big money at fields that are either Gen Ed courses or hobbies

Borrowing from football?

Anyway, the Eric Barren Grand Cathedral of the Arts (and such) looks like a bargain.

Believe the Chaiken's pushed to have the building named for Dean Welch. They've "thrown" enough money at PSU liberal arts

"It will be constructed under Penn State guidelines to meet Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design certification and will utilize the university’s new reuse water system. High-efficiency aluminum windows and curtain wall systems will make maximum use of natural light and the roof is designed to accommodate a future solar array"

Soo . . . sewer water?

"Landscaping will focus “on native and naturalized species that are highly adaptable and require minimum maintenance,” Saville said. Trees throughout the Park Avenue corridor will be maintained, along with additional screen and landscape plantings"

and, PSU is paying a maintenance person to water plants with a hose?

I hope that wasn't the case when you were building those bridges in Alaska.
They were temporary wooden bridges, 500 feet long and better. Every year they were rebuilt because the banks of the Alaskan rivers changed much due to meandering and swelling of the waters during each year. The bridges provided crossings for the first 300 miles from Prudhoe Bay for equipment, pipe and other materials.

Like pre law or economics for example. Dean Welch and her husband donated over $3 million themselves.

Plus a lot of economics majors go on and get an MBA or other professional degrees. Also many employers prefer liberal arts majors because they can write clearly, think analytically, and communicate effectively - skills which are often lacking among technical degree recipients.

Board Of Trustees Officially Raises Tuition For 2022-23 Year | Onward State

Will have a recap in the coming days - on all the activities of the week - but here is a quick write up on the tuition issue from OnwardState.
“We were surprised a bit by the state’s flat funding,” Fenchak said. “It came to us at the last minute, sort of threw things into a tizzy. Unfortunately, I think the knee-jerk reaction was, ‘Okay we have to raise tuition.’ And I think perhaps the knee-jerk reaction should have been, ‘We need to get to work on the things that we should’ve been doing for the last 10 years and light a little bit of a fire underneath our behinds to get a little bit more aggressive with cost control and being more efficient.'”

Vote - 26-6. Thanks for your efforts Barry.

What percentage of students come from families with incomes below $75K?

And if we're in such "hyperinflationary" times, how do Short and his cronies justify a meager 2.5% comp increase to university employees? Or is that adjusted by income level as well? Maybe Brandon doesn't feel their pain.

As to your first question: I will go back and check - and see if I have a more precise figure to include in my write up.... but off the top of my head I am thinking around 25%

Many thanks.

Is the $75k figure an all-or-nothing number e.g. a student from a family with an income of $74,800 would receive an "Access Grant" fully offsetting the tuition increase while another with a family income of $75,300 would receive nothing? Tell me this isn't the best thing Sara Thordike could come up with.

A couple of thoughts....

Will that $75,000 be defined as gross income or taxable income? What is the definition of a "family"? Will the "family" have to provide copies of tax returns to somebody at PSU? Will this "family" income definition include the income of high school family members working summer jobs?
