I had a friend to call me today saying a coach told him that Phil Turner is leaving. Has anyone else heard this?

Reliable sources say it's true. This has been talked about for the last couple of weeks though, not really new.

Although, it's been Rick's policy to not try and sway a player's decision. Losing Ben, Phil, more than likely Jamont, and Rhodes graduating put us right back at 05-06. Gonna be another 15-15 year.

I can't remember Turner contributing anything over the last two months of the season other than an occasional ill advised 30 foot brick.

turner went from starting to not even getting garbage minutes. Something was going on with that situation.

What happened is Ravern stepped up his play and became the first non-big (BJ and Elgin) subbed into the game. Phils shot wasnt falling, so Raven got his chance. Just as good on defense and 4 inches taller. Once Phil lost his spot when Charles came back to start, things changed. The size difference was a better matchup when Phil wasnt showing any offensive upside.

Phil' shot wasn't consistent at all, but he was only a freshman. He had a few double digit scoring games S.Alabama, TXAM-CC, Mizzou (along with 10 rebs), UK...Also had something like 8 pts and 9 rebs against Georgia during the regular season. He also hustled and had a knack for grabbing a steal here and there, and even blocked a few shots. I don't suspect Phil would ever be an all-sec type guy for us, but if he sticks around I think he's a solid sixth man next year and a possible starter by his junior or senior year. He reminds me of a smaller, though less erratic, Dietric Slater. With the lack of guards coming back next year, there's plenty of minutes for him to earn.

thats what this team has got to have if we are ever going to make a deep Tourney run. We have got to have 8 solid, experienced guys. And with all the changeover, its never going to happen

....not. Most of them didn't contribute much anyway. We'll do fine with just 5 players.

Hansbrough is out.

Bost and Beckham are coming in.

so there is 1 guy out and 2 coming in. what is this 'lack of guards coming back' talk? yeah, Jamont may bolt, and that would mean 2 guards out and 2 guards coming in. we would have the same number as last season.

and i havnet even seen Bost play, but if he has any talent at all, he will be able to come in and play more productive minutes than Phil. of course, that is assuming Phil doesnt suddenly learn how to shoot. he was our worst shooter and 3pt shooter last season...and i hear he is a shooting guard.

I guess the fact that Phil has game experience means nothing. He's been in the system for two years now, and initially that will give him the edge over either of the frosh. Like I said before he's a streaky shooter, so he needs to work on that...but he does a lot of different things that can benefit our team besides scoring. We don't need Phil to play 35 minutes a game next year. He needs to give us 20 minutes of solid defense and if he scores some, then that's gravy. He has the ability to put points up, he came out of Greneda as a guy that was the focus of his team's offense, but just lost his confidence when his minutes were down to 3 or 4 a game. That's when he would shoot an ill-advised shot because he wanted to score. If Phil matures a bit and let's the game come to him more, then he can be dangerous on the offensive end.

Techincaly the "lack of guards coming back" would not refer to Bost or Beckham, seeing as they are not coming back, rather just joining.

Yeah, if Jamont left we'd have two leaving and two entering, however there is a huge difference between Hans-Jamont and two incoming freshmans. It'd be nice to have Phil Turner regardless for depth, something State fans apparently don't understand. It's just like last year when the Delks left, we heard "well, Ben and Barry were taking their spots anyway." The concept of having an experienced player that can come off the bench and provide quality minutes is beyond our fanbase and apparently our coaching staff.

you have to have guys that can give you 10-15 good minutes. Turner plays hard and defends and rebounds and I figure his shot will get a little better. We're not going anywhere special without solid depth.

Well, at least as of 6PM yesterday, that was the case when I talked to him personally. He's here for the duration.

Yeah the Delk Twins said the same thing when i asked them one day when they were shooting in the Sanderson.... I'm going to go out on a limb and say he was probably lying to you. The basketball players have no incentive to tell some random guy who they don't know if they are transferring or not.

thanks for that technicality.

i thought it was pretty friggin obvious that i was talking about guard depth as a whole. apparently it wasnt obvious enough. my apologies for not dumbing it down enough.
