Give it up. PSU didn't play a team worth a darn (no ranked regular season opponents and SOS of 55 out of 118) in 1968 until their bowl game beating the 6th ranked squad, winning in a squeaker. It wasn't much better in 1969, when their SOS was 54th out of 122, they only beat #17 WVU in the regular season before their bowl game and they beat the 6th ranked squad again in their bowl game in another barnburner.

There's no reason to assume they would have won the NC either year. The fact is, they didn't.
From:

Penn State actually played more rated teams, in both the original and fixed AP polls, and moreover, Penn State's opponents were 58-52-2, while Texas' opponents were a putrid 47-64-1. Not only that, but due to Arkansas' upset loss in the Sugar Bowl, Missouri is a better team than any that Texas played. I mentioned earlier that Missouri beat #6 Michigan 40-17 and #10 Nebraska 17-7. Well, they also stomped on #23 Oklahoma 44-10, much better than Texas did against the Sooners.

PSU is number 7 in all time wins for FBS schools. PSU is number 9 for FBS schools on the win percentage list. PSU is number 5 in all time bowl wins. PSU’s average is 7. We’re number 9 on this new list. Oklahoma is number 6 on win and win percentage lists and number 5 in bowl wins, but number 3 on this new list. USC is number 10 on the wins list, 8 on the win percentage list, and 3 on the bowl wins list, for an average of 7, but number 6 on this new list. We’re ahead of Nebraska in all 3 categories, but behind them in this new list. This new metric is based on people’s perceptions; it is less reliable than win total and win percentage. It has taken into account regional biases. Same for the list of prior national champions. PSU historically does worse when bias is included, and the other teams historically do better. Darlings of media. Takeaway is that PSU is solidly a top 10 team that does not benefit from bias. PSU is probably the number 7 all time team. Stuff like this new metric loosely falls in the lies, damn lies and statistics category. It is manipulated “data.” Notably, Georgia, Clemson and Tennessee are behind us in this new metric of alleged historic greatness. They are also behind in total wins and win percentage. Only Georgia is ahead in bowl wins, but not Clemson and Tennessee. Ohio State and Michigan are behind in bowl wins. PSU is good enough to compete with the top teams. We have a new QB and it looks like measures were taken to get him some quality receivers through the portal to supplement those on the roster. We’re a great football program that could do great things in the very near future. Regardless whether we like his methods, Franklin’s contract may be reasonable. His desire to hire more staff and pay them better was the right move and was necessary to keep up. I noticed that during this season, he did not try to renegotiate his contract. I won’t speculate, but there is a new AD now. Everything about PSU football seems to be headed in the right direction. Now just develop Allar into what we all think he can be. I think the future is bright!
