Seems like some of you on this board know a lot about many things, so I'm asking. Reason is one of my cousins had a 5 year old GE refrigerator that croaked. Repairman said it couldn't be repaired, so they ended up having to buy a new one.

My question is, what brand of kitchen appliances are best, which do you trust? For years I've had Kitchenaids with no problems. My daughter has gone with Bosch and Fisher-Paykel.

Talking with my cousin who just bought another GE fridge. She said after talking to the repair technican and the appliance store sales people she is convinced most of today’s brands are junk. 🙁

Years ago there were lots of places selling appliances. There were even stores dedicated to selling appliances and nothing else. Now there are very few stores selling appliances. Best Buy and Home Depot are two I can think of. Costco does but the selection is limited. Our washer recently crapped out and we got a new one at Best Buy. There are no department stores like Sears selling that kind of stuff anymore. I agree, the new appliances are a mess. All kinds of fancy electronics that supposedly make it "efficient" but just wind up increasing the cost and adding another feature to break or fail.

Funny that this is brought up now. Have a 10 yr old Kenmore Washer that I have an issue with. When it gets to the final stage to do the Rinse/Spin, it sometimes starts and but doesn't complete. If I just go and do a Rinse/Spin cycle, it may take two attempts to get the cloths to finally complete the Spin. Some sites recommended changing the Capacitor. Tried that, but of course, no difference. Hate to buy a new one when it probably only needs some unknown part to be replaced.
Don't know what brand I would get now if I can't get this fixed.

Recently replaced our washer with a Maytag top load version. I didn’t opt for the smart capable washer. We went with the recommendation of the sales person at Lowe’s regarding fewest returns or service problems. Happy so far, but it’s only been about 6 weeks. It has a very deep drum, holds a lot of laundry, and is reasonably quiet. I agree with the others about choosing a model without too many bells a whistles.

@massimoManca II has been advocating that approach for years.

Have heard great things about Speed Queen washers (top load only) and dryers. Bosch is the best dishwasher. Have heard to avoid Samsung and LG like the plague in general.

I refuse to buy Korean brands based on the tale a poster, a Whirlpool engineer, shared here on the McAndrew board about 10-15yrs ago about the Korean’s unapologetic cribbing if Intellectual Property / stampings … that poster / his story was incredibly interesting

i’ve a 13yr old Frigidaire refrigerator I’ve repaired multiple times, an 8yr old Kitchen Aid dishwasher I’ve had to troubleshoot, a GE Cafe series dual fuel slide in range that I’ve done done work on… and 27yr old whirlpool top-load washer & dryer that I’ve repaired a few times… just replaced nylon “dogs” in my top load Whirlpool agitator which set me back a whopping $6

refrigerators are tricky - shopping now for an upcoming full kitchen remodel and will base my decision on the design/ stoutness of the plastics & shelves ( all refrigerators seem to feature EZ-crack shelves / plastics , which are ridiculously expensive parts to replace )

I remember that post, and that poster, quite well. He provided a lot of insight on appliances, and was quite helpful to many posters in terms of answering their questions.

Unfortunately, that might be true. We have a really old GE freezer (like 35+ years old). Every time the repairman checks it out he says to never to get rid of it because the newer stuff only lasts like 5-7 years before needing to be replaced.

Since Sub-Zero is dream land for most all, Kitchen-Aid might be worth looking into? I've had one running at another residence for 22 years. Still works okay.

Beko might be a brand worth looking into? I've seen it as a "budget" brand at high end appliance store (Fischer Paykel, Miele, Dayco, Sub-Zero/ Wolf, etc.

I have two Samsung TVs that I love. Have a Samsung fridge that had the ice maker crap out after a year and a half. Frustrating.
The Samsung ice makers are a big issue. That being said I replaced my own with a replacement from Amazon and a couple YouTube videos. DM me if I can provide any guidance.

We have had really crummy luck with appliances. We remodeled our kitchen in 2015. Went with Fridgidaire Gallery for the entire kitchen because my wife wanted the fingerprintless stainless steel finish they offered at the time. Within a few years we had several issues with the dishwasher including the control panel biting the dust that ultimately led to us replacing it just 3 years after we bought it. We replaced it with Kitchenaid because the salesman at an appliance store said they were more reliable. We also choose to buy the extended warranty after our luck with the previous one. About 4 years after we bought the Kitchenaid, something broke in the bottom and water leaked onto our kitchen floor, which is hardwood. It took 2+ weeks to get parts, and about another 2 weeks to get another repair appointment, so we were washing dishes by hand for a family of four (with 2 teenage boys) while waiting for the repair. The oven/range control panel went bad last October 2022. The range was throwing a code and beeping continuously unless we unplugged it. It cost about $500 to replace, but was still way cheaper than buying a new one, so we did it. Two weeks ago the temperature sensor went bad and that needed to be replaced. Same symptoms. Throwing a code and beeping constantly unless it was unplugged. Another $240 to fix it. The refrigerator was fine until about a month ago when the ice maker suddenly stopped working. It hasn’t made one cube of ice since. I checked all the easy to replace things without any luck. A few people I work with recently have had ice maker issues also. One of them spent nearly $1000 to fix theirs and it stopped working again a few weeks later. So, I bought a stand alone ice maker which now sits on our counter top. Keep in mind all these appliances were brand new in 2015, so only 8 years ago.
This brings me to the washer and dryer. We had a Whirlpool in the early 2000’s when we got married and the transmission in it went bad after 13 months. Exactly 1 month after the warranty ran out. The repairman, fortunately, worked a deal for us and fixed it at no cost. It died sometime around 2006-2007? We replaced it with a GE and got a dryer to match also. They both sucked. I will never buy GE again. The washer quit working after just a few years. It would fill to rinse but not drain. I would have to remove the water with a cup. The dryer also stopped working after a few years. It somehow got a short in it and would kick the GFI breakers when you would try to use it. We replaced both with Maytag.
Bottom line is that all the new appliances suck and are not made to last. I had a repair man tell me to go to Lowe’s or Home Depot and buy the cheapest one I could find because they are all poorly made. 😡
On a side note, my parents have a very old chest freezer. It is probably approximately 80 years old?? It was my grandfather’s uncles. I think it is a Kelvinator? Maybe? Still runs like a charm. Only issue was the handle wouldn’t latch so my dad made one for it. No issues otherwise.

Does anyone here remember Goldstar electronics? They were always the cheapest vcr's, DVD players, TV's, etc.

You got what you paid for but man they were affordable to the point where they were almost like disposables.

Well. Fast-forward 20 years and Goldstar has recast themselves as none other than LG, now viewed as somewhat of a high end brand. Remarkable marketing.

Having said that, our LG fridge needed a new compressor in 3 years. No longer priced like a disposable.

Will be moving away from LG as things wear out and break. And toward GE or Whirlpool.

I forgot to add that the GE washer that we hated was advertised as an energy saver/water saver. It was terrible. If we used it on the normal setting, we would get clothes out that never got wet through the whole wash cycle. We would have to use the heavy/bulk setting for it to fill with enough water to get all the clothes wet, but sometimes they still weren’t clean. Sometimes it required washing the same clothes twice to get them clean. So much for energy/water savings. Also, when it would fill to rinse and never spin the water out, the lid would be locked, so I would have a difficult time getting the lid unlocked to scoop the water out. Gave me a horrible impression of GE.

My wife just reminded me about the microwave we bought with the kitchen remodel also. It was a GE Spacesaver. We bought it because the space we put it in would only accommodate certain size microwaves. We had it a week before the button to open and close it broke. The appliance store did replace it at no cost but, regardless, the things are cheaply made. This whole conversation has stirred up some pent up anger.

We have a samsung fridge that has worked well except for the ice maker. It's in the fridge part of the fridge/freezer and it's not sealed well, so eventually it freezes up and I have to chip away the ice so it works again. about every month or 2. Just bought a bosch dishwasher a year ago and no problems with it so far.

Buddy of mine swears by speed queen washers and dryers. old school, with turn-dials and all. more expensive on the front end, but last a while.

Funny thing is, the oven and microwave we have are hotpoint brand (OG builders grade). Dishwasher was the same (only replaced it because it was loud). house was built in 2009. Micro and range are still kickin, dishwasher was working fine when we replaced it.

we ALWAYS go by consumer reports when we buy stuff.

I have a pretty basic Whirlpool, just an ice maker, and its fine.
One thing I don't like but I've noticed it in other models is the interior light fixture on top takes up too much damn room.

So, as far as the turn dials go, the salesman at the appliance store told me that is window dressing. All the machines now have a control panel regardless of turn dials or digital buttons. He told me when the older customers ask for the “old fashioned” turn dials he happily shows them to them, but behind the turn dials is an electronic control panel much like all the others. FWIW.

Yup. When my 3 year old Whirlpool washer died and the repair guy said it was the mother board, as an engineer, i had to ask myself...."why the f**k does my washing machine have a motherboard?"
Cost to replace the board? Just over 50% the cost of the washer.
All in the name of efficiency. Save a few kW. Save a few liters of water.

But i doubt they are factoring into their calculations that I'm pitching washing machines every 3 years instead of every 12. I seriously doubt its better for the environment.

Bought the same Whirlpool as a replacement. Got 2 years out if it. Bought the absolute cheapest POS Admiral to replace that. I do not spend money on good appliances....they all just suck nowadays.
