I know it was only Akron, but Ashford seemed to show he was capable of more than they asked him to do against LSU, which was essentially nothing. I felt at the time like we went way too conservative after Sellers went out, and seeing Ashford play last night confirms that. I think he might have at least been able to pick up a few first downs that could have made the difference in the outcome.

The difference between the Ashford we saw against Akron and the Ashford we saw against LSU was the result of a full week of practice and preparation as QB1.

Possibly. I don't know if 1 week of practice would be that transformational.

I hope he does not get the chance.
Based on the play selection last Saturday, it sure looks like Ashford will get more opportunities, probably out of necessity. You have to think that the staff knows Ashford needs to be able to step in and step up going forward since he has had to sub in (or start) in place of LaNorris three out of the last three games because of injuries. I am fearing a trend is developing here.

I don’t think you can start drawing any conclusions yet that Sellers is injury prone. He has taken a crazy number of big hits. Even against ODU he ran the ball a lot and took some big hits on sacks. He’s a big guy and I think will be fine but we have to protect him better and probably need to manage him better so that he doesn’t end up running the ball 20 times a game.

Remember- he was injured against LSU dropping back to pass, not on a QB run. I am not wishing ill on LS, just stating a fact that hit me like a ton of bricks at W-B last Saturday. 3 out of 3 games may be considered a trend, but no matter what, RA needs to be ready to go on a moment's notice.

Whether you are taking a big hit on a drop back pass, or running the ball, there is still a real risk of injury. My point was he has taken a lot of big hits in every game whether running the ball or getting hit on pass attempts. It’s not really that surprising to me he’s had a few minor injuries to this point with the sheer number of big hits he’s taken. We’ll see but to me it’s more an indicator he needs to be protected a little better and managed a little better to avoid as many big hits than it is he is necessarily injury prone

And per Ashford, he got some extra film study with Coach Shula, one hour a day each day this week, he says it really helped him and I bet it did help, along with Akron and not LSU staring back at him from across the line.

Me and Shula had a thing this week. We would come in after dinner time around like 7:30 or 8, and just get an hour in. That was just something we were able to do this week, just because we had the time. I was able to find it in my schedule, to be able to get over there. That helped me so much, tremendously, just be able to watch that with Coach Shula. That’s a great right there, that’s a coaching great, and just to be able to learn from him and Coach D-Lo

This is true. Tough to jump in and perform without preparation.
It always amazed me the way Mitchell and Hold were interchangeable at QB. The way Hold in particular would come off the bench throwing bullets and bombs for TD's was unreal.

I obviously hope you are right! We need him to be the difference-maker going forward.

Which to me is testimony to Spencer Rattler. Toughest hombre I ever saw.

Hands down.

Dude took a beating every game last year. Bounced up like a spring every time. How he made it through 2 seasons of that without missing a snap due to injury is beyond me.

More remarkable to me, even though his NFL future was at stake, not once did he display even faint frustration at the OL play.

Early in his first season I thought he was going to be a wuzzy because he would not run the ball when he had the opportunity to scramble for yardage. But to his credit he made a believer out of me big time and I think his breakout was a scramble for a TD against SC State.
