the Langley based F-22's were vectored to the scene despite our having lethal assets within a hundred miles of the target.
Because they were on alerts duty with NORAD and had the ability to shadow the object.
Now there are three....including the lastest over Yukon. All directed by NORAD. You do know what NORAD is?

Sure I know what NORAD is. When the balloon was traversing NC and SC, the F-22 aircraft were not shadowing.at that time. We had other alert aircraft on station; however, it was earlier decided that the F-22's would be called up due to the altitude of the balloon. Thus, they were sent south from Virginia well in advance of the balloons egress to the ocean. I see that you did not read the article that I attached. All three of these balloons have been shot down by F-22 that are not based in Alaska, despite a regular USAF base with F-16's organically based there. Those F-16 weren't even used in the balloon was at 40,000 ft. If you are trying to be a smart ***, bring it on.

It has to be done, but be culturally aware that every shot using a live AIM-9X Sidewinder missile is at a cost of $400,000.00. Thanks for your post, that was a good summary.

Think it's pretty funny that we missed the first shot on a balloon we shot down over the weekend. How does an F-16 shooting a Sidewinder missile miss hitting a balloon? I'm sure there's probably a technical reason, but it sounds pretty comical.

Anybody else just find it odd that we're out here using advanced military fighter jets, shooting $400K missiles, and they claim they don't even know what we're shooting? Something just seems off. They're confused by the lack of propulsion, their ability to just hang up in the sky?? What, like the freaking balloon we just shot down?? I find the whole thing shocking. They want so bad for us to think it's aliens. Then they can continue to try to ignore the fact that we attacked a sovereign nation's (an ally) energy source.

it was actually an F-22 much newer and more expensive and pretty sure that was the first "confirmed kill" by a F-22

The one shot down over Lake Huron was by an F-16. Either way, just seems funny for a tens of millions of dollars fighter jet to miss shooting at a balloon.

Yeah I'm not sure why we're not trying other methods to bring them down. Why not test other systems... unless we dont have other systems? Seems to me we need to learn how to bring one of these down whole. Learn to hack it and the likes... instead of just blowing things up.

How about a bag of thumbtacks?? lol

But seriously. Could we not take down a balloon with 50 cal on a chopper?? Seems to me you just light up the balloon with 100 rounds and let it fall. This whole think is very strange.

We can burn up a tiny tumor with a lazer but we cant hit a giant balloon yet I guess.

The highest a chopper can get is around 25,000 ft.. It the boys finally being able to play with their toys with active firing.... Why else do you send up your newest/shiniest F-22. Agree they could have used the guns on the aircraft, but knowing how loathsome they fear damage, they would be concerned where all the bullets went as they would have to come down out of the sky at somepoint. Think of the scenes from the middle east with the people firing rifles into the sky. Those bullets land someplace...

That makes sense on the altitude. It does appear everywhere we shot them down was very remote. We had a errant sidewinder flying over Lake Heron. I'm sure they'd much rather have a few stray bullets. No other reason that for a show. Or, to destroy the evidence as much as possible....

From what I’ve read, they used a heat seeking missile, the one you mentioned but the balloon didn’t have heat for it to detect.Plus it said they didn’t know where it landed. It seems at the lower altitude of these latest balloons,a machine gun would work.

Likely too risky (trying to pick off a small object with a fast jet). If not done just right, they run the risk of flying into the object and losing a plane and possibly a pilot.
I was going to put in my reply to 18 was to use a harrier jet. They can come to a stop in air,put some holes in it and go back to regular flying.i dont know where they’re stationed at.proberly not possible.

CBS News now says we actually watched the first balloon take off from southern China and tracked it across the Pacific. Joe Biden needs to stand in front of America and tell us the truth. But I have a better chance of growing a second penis than that happening.

And why exactly should Military Intelligence tell us how they tracking, when they are tracking, and what information is being gathered by tracking.
Knowing what the other side is doing, and just as importantly not letting the other side know what you what you are doing is a distinct advantage that can not be underestimated.
Anyone who has participated in intelligence gathering can tell you that protecting one's assets whatever they may be is absolutely paramount.

My guess is it’s probably not in our best interest to let an adversary fly a spy craft in plain sight literally across our entire country.

Actually, the Canadians tried shooting holes in one several years ago with their F-18 Hornets, and succeeding in doing just that. But, it took almost a whole day before the balloon deflated. I'm with you, but at the end of the day, given the altitude of the Myrtle Beach balloon, the F-22 and its ability to operate in a 60,000 ft zone was the only option. Thanks.

Dude....quit posting disinformation. The Raptor was not the only option.
They could have shot it down with other planes if they wanted. They could have launched an AMRAAM at it if needed.
It was a choice made for a reason, not because it was the only option.

I really don't disagree with you, it was a choice made for reason. Go find the decision tree on this and get your own life. You must think you are quite the armchair General by responding critically to everything I post. The F-22 earned the right to shoot for a reason. They considered many options. You can start with this:

So now you admit you were wrong? Seems you don't like getting fact checked. Deal with it.

Sorry, I never said I was wrong, you just assumed it. For some reason you have a problem with each and every one of my post. You are the one that needs to fact check, I have already done that and supplied you with several pieces of evidence in the process. Please go away. Thank you.
