The monies do not go directly to research. They go to Penn State (in the form of Hershey)--which does use them for research, but I do not trust the trustees of this university to use the money wisely. For one, it can be 100% used to fund research, but the university can reduce the other funding they give to research and use it in other ways, because the research is paid for already by THON. That's fungibility. This is the issue, in some states (Ohio included) where lottery money is earmarked for schools (in Ohio) or other projects in other states. In Ohio's case, through the years, the Legislature has then reduced other monies that were spent on education for other projects, as the lottery covered that amount they were spending previously. So there's really no additional benefit to education from the lottery. For another, due to the way Penn State works (and the way they are headed) there's no accountability. They are not subject to Sunshine laws, and requests for budget info are met with silence. Were I to donate to childhood cancer research, I'd pick a place like Children's Hospital here in Columbus, where they do have accountability. You are welcome do do with your money what you believe to be correct. But--it's not a matter of like or hate. It's a matter of trust. I love Penn State. I do not trust their leadership. And there are ample reasons for this.
