Who knows? I expect them to make every effort, but it doesn't always happen. Just ask Terry Pegula.

FWIW: Among members of the Board at least, there were more who spoke out against the $80 million (really, when all was said and done, $120 million) for the Barron Museum than there were who spoke out against the $700 million bit.Many folks here did and still do.

Interesting, but not surprising. I was “speaking” in general terms with my prior post.
I guess many of the trustees see football as where PSU’s bread is buttered. They can’t go against football. Too popular, too much money at stake.

And yes, people on this board ridiculed the building of the museum. Other than that, not many people seemed to question it.
It is fair to question the need for a new museum at the tune of $85 MM. Even though academics will not be affected by the stadium expansion, it can certainly be argued that it is a bad look (OPTICS.
) for a school announcing layoffs in academics and the potential closing of campuses to be spending $700 MM on football. Financial boondoggle or not, a case could be made that maintaining an art museum fits with the purpose of the Land Grants.

If cost comes in below $900M, I will be stunned. If I was a betting person, I would bet right at $1B.

I don’t think it’s a bad idea per se - just wondering if new build wasn’t the better option.
I think they're in a tough spot and afraid of alienating the traditionalists and long time ticket holders(donors). I'd be all for it if they could build a brand new stadium that holds 85,000 for $700 mm. There's certainly room enough to build while still playing in Beav.
Sorry if already asked and answered: is there any sort of consensus on how much a new build would cost?
Here's one that currently being built and it lists other new stadium price tags. Of course, they are NFL stadiums but I'm not sure a college stadium would be much different.

If PSU were to build a new stadium, it would have to cost much more than $700 MM. If you’re going to start from scratch, then you need to include a pool, amusement park, shopping mall, casino, restaurants, bars, and coffee shops, for starters.
The rest of that stuff is on tap for Phase II of the project. Didn't Schuy King drop you the memo?

Therein lies one of the problems. A complete new stadium should have been one of the options presented, but it's not clear that any were considered. But that option is moot; PSU can't afford it.
That same limestone/cavern story was given for the way Hammond Building was built back in my day (late 70s) as the story was that it originally was planned to be 9 stories, and they just de-stacked it.
That story about Hammond being originally designed as a nine-floor building is a local urban myth. The original layout was what you see; it was just a bad design job.

If either of you two idiots had an IQ higher than the speed limit outside my local elementary school, you'd realize Barry is perhaps the only one who actually has Penn State's best interest at heart. Barry's never been a "joe pa stadium" guy - he's a fiduciary who doesn't want to spend $700m in this interest rate environment with the quickly changing college football landscape. If you can't handle that, then its probably best you let your mom know you're going to be spending less time in the basement going forward.

Maybe we wouldn’t be in this spot if we acted the last 10-15 years or so, but the solution isn’t to just do nothing or put a bandaid on it. Apologies if that offends you.
