Belichick hire - a Positive or a Negative for UNC

''UNC’s program desperately needs a long-term infusion of energy. Not the kind of quick burst you get from downing a can of Red Bull.

The Tar Heels tried that by bringing Mack Brown out of retirement 6 years ago and it worked for a while.

But it didn’t end well. Hiring Belichick wouldn’t, either.

It would only be a matter of time before the cantankerous coach gets tired of dealing with 18-year-olds, with the media, with athletic administrators and with trips to out-of-the-spotlight places like Winston-Salem and Blacksburg, and decides he’s had enough and walks away.

He could potentially leave a mess even worse than the one Matt Doherty created for UNC’s basketball program back in the early 2000s. And without a Roy Williams waiting in the wings to swoop in and clean things up, it could take years for the Tar Heels to recover.

But at least they’d win the press conference.''

Man, they sure like to hire old guys. Granted we hired a couple older guys as well. But they were both gone younger than BB is now. That whole coach-in-waiting thing never seems to work out when the coach decides to leave or the relationship sours.

He should be the best coach in that conference. That being said I don't see anything positive coming from it. More of a sideshow.

Smells of desperation to me and I think it will be a disaster. Belichick has no college coaching experience, has never recruited any player and really didn't win much without Brady and he won't have Brady at UNC.

Well, for one thing it will put them at the center of the college football world in much the same way Deion at Colorado did.

Besides that, I think North Carolina sees their position in the college football world not really changing that much by doing things that traditional way. Will the hire of Belichick work? Time will tell. But from their perspective I guess it’s worth the risk. He’s going to do things a totally different way than anyone else is doing them. One way or another, it will be spectacular.

He has a model in mind that will break the mold. That's the real story here, not Belichick. If unabashedly picking and preparing players to go to the NFL works there, others will have to adopt the template.

I'm thinking the same way. This isn't just any old man. This is an accomplished old man bringing a new mousetrap.

Yep. As with the portal. Even coaches who initially expressed reluctance about the portal, very quickly jumped in on the action once other people started doing it.

It doesn’t matter what it is. If it’s successful, everyone will start doing it as quickly as possible.

There was a time when we hired "old" coaches who were there because of merits not in the immediate past.

We are not a program that can look down on a program hiring a legend to bring some relevance, but Belichick is different given the age he is starting at 72 years old, and not being a college football legend but a pro legend, but they will get crazy pub and attention.

Ages listed as of day of reported hiring on Wednesday, Dec. 11

  1. Bill Belichick (North Carolina): 72
  2. Kirk Ferentz (Iowa): 69
  3. K.C. Keeler (Temple): 65 years, 4 months, 16 days
  4. Kyle Whittingham (Utah): 65 years, 21 days
  5. Willie Fritz (Houston): 64
  6. Curt Cignetti (Indiana): 63 years, 6 months, 10 days
  7. Brian Kelly (LSU): 63 years, 1 month, 17 days
  8. Jim Mora (UConn): 63 years, 23 days
  9. Sam Pittman (Arkansas): 63 years, 14 days
  10. Jay Norvell (Colorado State): 61 years, 8 months, 14 days

Holbrook. But then, no one could have predicted it would turn out as it did,

Yep, this is the thing. I don't think the UNC board would have approved this unless A) they were serious, and B) they got deep money people ready to fund it.

Will it work? IDK, but I imagine it will draw a lot of talent of it looks like they can deliver.

Belichick is coming from a totally different world than the NFL. In the NFL, you get to draft, and in the years after Brady, he did that poorly. I just don't see many top prospects saying sign me up for Bill Belichick. They will get some players because UNC is a Power 4 program. However, I don't see them being a Top 20 program in recruiting. Will have to win with coaching.

You know what he has done? He managed a locker room with players who had different pay rates. He understands what it takes to make it to the NFL, has the necessary contacts, and knows how to prepare players for the league. He is well-versed in the management and operations of an NFL team. With college football getting closer to the NFL, this could work.

Now, you ask about recruiting? Well he asked for 20 million a year in NIL and it was granted. 20 million will do a pile of talking. That’s precisely the purpose of the recruiting team he has set up, which is solely dedicated to recruiting. His general manager will handle the team’s management.

Agree. It will be very interesting and sounds like an idea/model created in one of those holier-than-thou UNC case study laboratories.
If UNC becomes a ''minor league NFL franchise'' not only will they potentially attract big-time recruits, but they will become the ''target win'' for teams loaded with other big-time recruits looking to make a name for themselves. But the ACC could be a shield against that type of competition.

I don’t think his coaching style translates to todays players.Announcer and former player Ross Tucker says Belichick coaches 100% negatively and I’m not sure todays players go for it.

Sounds to me like the same model every big time football program in the country already has, nothing new in that plan

Good lord, the first time he berates a player, the player will go whine to his agent, change tampons and enter the portal.

May get them in the door, but I doubt it keeps them. Unless Belichick doesn't play some of the mind games he played in the NFL, I see the portal being busy in Chapel Hill.

Correct me if I’m wrong but aren’t FSU and Clemson seeking to pressure the ACC—via a lawsuit that would allow them to leave the conference— into giving them a larger share of the financial pie than the rest of the ACC members?

With the advent of Belichick’s plan, costing millions per year, do they really believe Tobacco Road (i.e., UNC in particular) will allow them to gain a financial upper hand? UNC is going to need all the money they can get.

You should read up on it a little bit. It's way more intentional than anything I've heard yet. It's ALL ABOUT actively getting people with enough talent placed in the league. It's not just about welcoming scouts or having workout days for teams to look at players. He's talking specialized coaching, medical care, diet, pro-level training staff - the works.

I think you will see that other schools, including USC, will counter that they already offer most if not all of what he’s suggesting.

Don’t get me wrong, I’m sure he has selling points but high-profile programs already have dietitians, medical staff, specialized coaches, advisors, etc.

Whatever he’s selling—and I have not read his 400 pg document—if it’s not already being done, and is innovative and successful, will be quickly replicated.

Like your post said this will allow them to get the headlines for a few days just like the Mac Brown hire. Let me ask you a question, is anybody really worried that Bill Belichick is some sort of brilliant offensive or defensive mind, and that he’s going to hit the recruiting trail hard? Bill Belichick‘s success tracked totally with Tom Brady.

So if I was a North Carolina fan, I would be excited. And I’m sure they may have a nice little season his first one, then reality is going to set in.

Sounds like a Coach Cal football version. The emphasis on making pros of the players instead of building the best team possible.I don’t know!

I guess when you look at coaching hires, this makes as much sense as any. Coaching hires are a crap shoot. Most of them don't work out. A few do.

It'll be amusing to see Belichick out on the spring and summer speaking circuits, speaking in podunk towns around NC to drum up fan support. Also, does UNC do a coaches call-in show? That would be gold for the notoriously tight-lipped Belichick to have to make chummy with the moron fans.

What you described is what I anticipate. I know they will have some good .... and some surprises (good and bad). If he brings in a bunch of guys with limited to no collegiate experience....even though he may revolutionize how college staffs hire and what they get from admin....they could also underwhelm by hitting potholes that they didn't knew existed in this game.

Every top program in the country already recruits with the promise and plan of how they are going to get players to the NFL. Every legit head coach already knows what it takes to get to the NFL. He isn't bringing anything unique in that respect. Managing an NFL locker room is nothing like dealing with 100+ 18-22 yr olds.

20 million NIL is a lot of money but I don't think he's going to be able to simply buy a championship roster like UNC is an NFL team with no salary cap. College team's players signed have far more busts than NFL teams have busts from draft picks. He can't cut players after Spring practice if they aren't as good as he thought they might be.

HS coaching is much different than college and college is much different than the NFL. It is rare to see a coach move between those worlds successfully.

Ehhhh, I'd disagree there. I mean, look at Deion at Colorado. Their recruiting took off big time simply because of his success in the NFL as a player and his promise that he could get players ready for the NFL.

I'm not a Belichick fan and think he only found success due to Tom Brady (which the record backs up). Nevertheless, he's considered by most to be one of the top NFL head coaches of all time.

If Deion could get Colorado's recruiting to take off because of his NFL experience as a player 20+ years ago, I think you can easily extrapolate that to Belichick.

Yep it’s simple.

player: Coach tell me why you know more about what it takes in the NFL than all these college coaches.

coach: have they won 8 Super Bowls? Have they spent 30 years in the league establishing contacts?

It's a definite positive. It's the most ballyhooed collegiate athletic hiring of all time. Nothing I've ever seen even comes close.

Everything on this earth is temporary. Nothing that comes next detracts from now. Period. End of statement. Amen.
