Better stock up on beef now

Perhaps, but y'all are reading something into his comments that I didn't. He even mentioned that it would be unpopular to give up beef and that US cattle produce less methane gases than there counterparts in Africa. Sounds as though he is hedging his bets that it would ever happen. Beef is a commodity...if prices go up, more people raise cattle. If prices go down, you have fewer cattle that go to market. I remember going with my grandfather to sell cattle and him figuring how much to sale or not to sale based on the price he could get. Not sure there is any way to change that.

What annoys me most is the continued pattern of the rich elite lecturing about things that they themselves have zero intent to implement in their own lives. Bill may fully believe we need to shift to synthetic beef, but he has zero intent to make that shift himself. Unless he's already on a 100% synthetic beef diet, then he needs to clam up.

I don't particularly like the "do as I say, not as I do" people either. But they are definitely not limited to the rich and I have no clue what Gates may or may not eat....don't really want to either.

I don't eat a lot of beef anymore...will grill burgers or steaks a couple or three times a month. I've gotten to where I prefer shrimp burgers seasoned with Gullah seasoning.

I'm not going to give up meat altogether - I'm just going to grow my own!

https://www.theguardian.com/environ...l-lab-grown-meat-to-go-on-sale-for-first-time

Seriously though - "lab grown" meat is a hard idea to swallow, but maybe the wave of the future. They are still working out the kinks - and the taste (there's so much more to the taste of meat than the meat itself - the blood vessels, fat, etc. all contribute to the taste). It will be interesting to see what they come up with.

I think government involvement could tip the scale. Not eliminate one option, but much like electric vehicles, you can artificially make the alternative more and more expensive.

That's always possible....I never say never. But with beef I think we are a long way from that happening. People just aren't going to give up their steaks and, right now, I know of no substitute for steaks.

IMO, Beyond is a good beef burger substitute. Steak is a different matter.

Jim Gaffigan said it best: "You know who's awfully obsessed with things that taste like meat? Vegetarians."

Ha, just read that in the other thread too.

And I found this gem, as far as "forcing" people.

“Eventually, that green premium is modest enough that you can sort of change the [behavior of] people or use regulation to totally shift the demand,” he said.

So true. My daughter went through a vegetarian phase for about a year when she was much younger and I tried every damned recipe for a veggie "burger" that I could find on the internet. They all tasted like crap to me and the ingredients I had to buy to make them were a lot more expensive than a regular burger. Finally found a recipe that she liked....thank goodness.

I keep a close eye on carbs and have always hoped for a good pasta substitute. Someone told me about some kind of fake spaghetti stuff. Found it in the store in the refrigerate section, in a water-filled bag. You have to rinse the stuff thoroughly b/c it smells so bad, then heat it in water. It looked enough like spaghetti, so I was encouraged. Took a bite, dumped it all in the trash and made real spaghetti.

If they can't even make fake spaghetti, I don't see any hope for making fake steak.

I seriously hope we have learned that mandating certain behavior [or prohibiting it] simply does not work.

I still have to have a steak, or real burger, every once in a while - it's just too good. But have always stayed away from red meat most weeks as it's just horrible for you.

I started using these substitutes years ago and they definitely get the job done and keep beef cravings away. For sure with the Gardein beef crumbles. You put that in pasta sauce or chili, and you'd never know the difference. Ever. Also does well in tacos. Plant based meatballs are also solid. The rest of the stuff (chicken, burgers, sausage) is good enough, but not an equal substitute. My health thanks me for it though.
The fake beef crumbles definitely work in pasta sauce, etc.

Kind of reminds me of turkey burgers. Unless they are well-spiced, they are bland.

Well I mean, I can tout anyone to be an expert on anything. That doesn’t make it true. Bill gates is a brilliantly guy, I’m not ready to call his appointed people experts. It just don’t work that way. We can agreeably disagree about the word experts.
So what does it take to become an expert?

Spoiler: the people who work at the Gates Foundation usually start there after other jobs in public health. They are not "appointed". They are doctors, nurses, MPH, etc. from the real world. It is really hard to get a job there and I think the people are usually on the older side.

If you are a vaccine denier or whatever, maybe that would explain your view about why you think you are just as smart as all these people.

Gates has been a "thinker" ever since he was a teenager. Whether or not you agree with his opinions is a different matter.

Bill is buying up cattle ranches. Raise the price of beef beyond what most can afford. Cow farts cause global climate change, you know! Ugh!

You can go peddle your arrogance somewhere else. Thanks! As I said, your definition of expert obviously differs from mine.

The Carter Center may have hired experts. He, himself, is no expert...on disease or democracy.
Not saying whether or not Carter is a good leader, but good leaders do surround themselves with experts.

Notwithstanding Gates, I find Beyond Beef burgers to be tasty.
I thought it was decent. Then started seeing articles like this one pop up. Like anything else today, just know the ingredients.

I've heard that before, and don't disagree.

If you re-read my posts you'll note that I haven't commented on how healthy or not Beyond is; I merely stated that we find it the best tasting of all ersatz beef burgers.

LOL. We didn't like any of the food they had then, except those square pizzas we got every Friday. I was shocked at the selections and quality of food that my daughters got in school.

The soy burgers stretched the meat so thinly to make them affordable in those days that it took a ton of other spices and ingredients to make them look like burgers. They definitely weren't that good.

We had a choice of regular milk or chocolate. Chocolate was the overwhelming favorite.
You must be younger than me. I was in sixth grade during the 1971-72 school year (when I first began to doubt the wisdom of USC leaving the ACC). :giggle:

Because he started a foundation in 2000 to address many problems facing society and staffed it with experts who work on those issues and report their ideas and conclusions to him.

Similar to how Jimmy Carter became an authority on eradicating certain diseases and securing elections around the world after he was President.

The world has a lot of problems that won't be solved if profit is the only motive.
You can't be serious? Gates is all about money. Fake food is fake food. If you want to eat it, then you'll also want the vaccines which he openly admits have made him more money than Microsoft.

How would Bill personally profit from vaccines? And do you mean covid?

I looked up what you wrote and it seems like Bill was talking about the financial return to society. (Did you watch a 26 second clip on fb where he said a $10 billion investment would create a $200 billion profit?)

I really don't understand why people are so weird and fearful of some rich celebrity people, while embracing other ones which I won't list here.

Best lunch of the school week. Except we didn't have a choice of juice. And nobody drank water back then.
Nope. In high school it was pizza, fries and a cherry coke.

The Thursday chicken sandwiches weren’t too bad either.

Always hated looking forward to pizza day only to get Mexican pizza.

It's another charity for profit deal. Billionaires working the system.

{Keep in mind that if one "T" wasn't croseed in the article there would be an immediate libel suit.}

Also, Gates is fully aware that eating fake meat causes inflammation and chronic disease. The second ingredient is seed oil. That's inflammatory even prior to heat. When you cook it, oxidation goes through the roof. Then there's isolates, fillers, modified soy and all of the other crap you'll see in highly inflammatory, packaged foods.

I don’t know why anyone cares what he thinks about anything besides Microsoft programs . For some reason he’s treated as an expert on vaccines, global warming, world hunger and a host of other issues.
They don’t see him as an expert in anything, they just go to him so they can control the flow of information or the lack thereof. If you get my drift
