Cars that punched above their weight

While certainly not in the sleeper category, my ultimate boner car as a kid was the Superbird. Had a chance to buy one about 7 years ago for around 100k. My usually okay with cars wife said no F way.

Just checked the price on a ‘69 Vette and they were slightly higher at retail but only by a couple hundred dollars.

@laKavosiey-st lion Drove by Katie’s this morning and all the beasts are out…
Keep an eye out for this cool cat. He’s out of MD but frequents Katie’s. i chat with him on bimmerpost, these cars are impossible to test drive so he’s going to take me for a spin so I can get a better feel for comfort (Jane) mode. If it’s too stiff jane won’t roll with me.
here it’s getting satin ppf at LaPrima Fairfax

Couldn't drive it in the rain. Traction at 0-60 was terrible (great on dry roads!) I could "squeal" the tires at 65 mph. Engine cut off at 125
That meant the GNX could hit 60 mph from a standstill in 4.7 seconds, according to Car and Driver. To put that in perspective, this was faster than the Corvettes, Ferraris, Porsches, and even the Lamborghini Countach. For a brief period, the fastest production in the world was the Buick GNX. The top sale price was $550,000 for a 1987 BUICK GRAND NATIONAL 'THE LAST GRAND NATIONAL' on January 29 2022.

Someone doesn’t understand the concept of “punching above one’s weight”
Nova , Chevelle, Lotus, 2002, other muscle cars ? I thought that same thing before I posted anything. But Bro the post title has been violated more than a Kardashian at a NBA hotel.

I’d argue for Nova - perhaps, as it was GM’s lowly entry-level “small car” … essentially the same platform as the F-bodied Camaro/Firebird it happened to also be GMs best-handling sedan of the time (hence why it was later selected to serve as the foundation for the successful Cadillac Seville) …. Those other submissions certainly do not qualify as “hitting above one’s weight” ….

With the translucent black back panel that you could kinda sorta but not really see thru. Lol

A friend had one and it was fun but impractical.
Impractical? The CR-X was a 1,800 lb go kart that returned 40mph while swallowing a 30” SONY Trinitron from Service Merchandise or get your 26” Free Spirit ten-speed home from Sears Roebuck

I have a 2013 VW Jetta TDi Sportwagon that I bought for gas mileage on a long commute, but it is really fun to drive.
How about the VW's GTI series? I've always thought they punched above their weight.

VW Golf has typically punched well above its lowly econobox weight … current MQB platform is rock solid …. Cabin / suspension/ aesthetic Refinement well beyond that of similar/higher priced Civics and Corollas …
Golf is the poster child of hitting above the weight class since the late 70s

I'm not a car guy so can you tell me the models of the cars in the picture. I think the first one is an mg or a triumph. I know the second one is a muscle car but I don't know which one, if i were to guess a Nova but I don't know the year.

88 Acura Integra 3-door. Pop up headlights, 8000 rpm redline, smooth as silk 5-speed, and 30+ mpg.

Favorite car I ever owned.

I agree!

It was the best car I ever owned, although I'm expecting that the new Camry XSE hybrid may give it it run for it's money........

I bought a base model 1988 5-spd Integra in August of 1992, on the Saturday th Dream Team was to play their first exibition game at I believe 2 pm or 4 pm. I made a take it or leave it offer 2 hrs before the start of the game at a dealer 10 minutes from home and they told me they'd do the deal if I took it that day. My response was that they better get with it as I planned to be home in 2 hrs. Traded in my rusty 1980 VW Scirocco.

The red Integra had 26k miles on it and drove like a dream. High reving, fun to drive, and got 30+ mpg no matter how hard I drove it. Only put front brakes on it, some exhaust repairs/replacements and tires on it the 10 years owned it. Put 200k on it in 10 years. Got $500 for it when I got rid of it with 226k on it in 2002, but it was probably 200 lbs lighter then due to the rust that ate it away. I had taken my sons to the B/W game in it that spring and my wife wasn't happy with me for taking the Integra.

It got rusty and eventually water would come in through the back of the wheel wells (I eventually found out). One day on the way home from work during a rain storm the water was building up in the passenger side rear floor. Going down a hill that water made it's way under the passenger front seat and the car stopped. The computer module I found out was located on the floor under that seat. Had it towed to my local shop and my guy was trying to find a used replacement computer module. A few days went by, I stopped by to talk to him, and decided to try and start it. It had dried out and started up and ran fine. I took the back seats out, saw the rust, and patched it with some roofing compound and then drove it for a few months before bying my wife a new car and then driving her 1989 Honda Accord and sadly getting rid of the Integra.

I always missed driving the Integra and about 10 years ago bought a 5 speed 2002 RSX from it's original owner and now only drive it on nice days. We are retired and when we take delivery of the Camry I'll be looking for a 2007-2009 red GT500 which will probably prompt me to sell one of our other cars. I'll miss the RSX if I do sell it as it's as fun to drive as the Integra was.........

Um, the Ford Pinto, in its own way?
Had one in the late 1970's that I bought used to drive to work in order to keep my Trans Am drivetrained Forula Firebird in the garage.

Biggest POS that I ever rode in. Scared me from buying another Ford to this day.

Black steelies = badge of badassery

Unless that GSW has an excessive odometer reading , it’s worth much > than $22k ….
He’s running snow symbol Vredsteins. When a big dump happens, 5-0 won’t let people up the mountains without awd and the snow symbol. They run fine in summer, not sporty but like an a/s touring tire

Last month I took the Michelin Xice winter tires/wheels off and scored a ridiculous deal on a set of a Michelin Crossclimate2 to replace the crappy OEM all-season Hankook (yuk) …
