At some point, the stark realization will have to come to Sankey,
"I no longer control the circumstances, the circumstances control me"
If this is happening, he knows it. If he knows it, he needs to be reaching out to some prospective schools day and night.

That development has now presented a new strategy for several prominent programs within the ACC. A misconception is that the ACC owns the GOR rights, but it is actually actually a condition of ESPN broadcasting. Do not be surprised ,if not now then later it is revealed, that part of the new negotiation strategy will be, either ESPN renegotiate the terms, or they bolt to their pre determined landing spots leaving ESPN without a product.
3 programs are now playing serious hardball.
I don’t think it’s that easy. Sure they could add desperate teams from the P12. But simply leaving ESPN without a product isn’t that simple. All home game must be produced under the ACC/ESPN deal. Meaning ACC gets all the revenue for them. I would imagine ESPN would still produce those games. Why wouldn’t they? How do you think they could be left without a product?

Okay, hypothetical time.

If the b10 grabs FSU and Miami, and I'll say clemson too, how does he grow the SEC and still maintain quality?

Is it the market idea over matchups? Unc, uva, or the Arizona schools?

I’ll argue that the difference in revenue will be damaging as well. Especially with NIL. That to will eat away at the southern teams recruiting advantage.

Despite his public remarks, and understandably so, I believe movement is afoot.
This will be a day full of rumors. As I type this the ACC athletic directors are in a conference call. FSU has a board meeting at 3 that’s suppose to be routine but who knows. Now tack on the fact that it seems the chair of the BOT of FSU is willing to go scorched earth on the ACC, the next few days could be interesting on the inter webs.

If this is happening, you have been on top of it. I hope you're on top of this also. There is truly a lot at stake, things that have epochal implications affecting the balance of power for many decades to come. The league that falls behind might always remain behind.

Everyone should take note of this :

The FSU Chariman of the BOT stated CLEARLY this evening "The least of my worries is the GOR. We are very familiar with that document, have invested significant financial and personnel resources into evaluating it, and that is not a document that will keep us from taking action".

And this from the Miami AD:
"in this interim period before we have a chance to go back to market"

They get teams down here and it opens up more recruiting inroads for all their teams. It would be catastrophic over time. As I said, we don't have any good way of getting back at them. SEC supremacy is weighed in the balances right now if this happens.
Good points.
Imagine if the B1G lures FSU and Miami. 1)Recruiting certainly opens up in one of the most fertile parts of the country. 2) Extra revenue is almost guaranteed. Huge contingency of B1G Alumni in the state of Florida.
3) Imagine a rotating schedule of sites for the B1G Championship Game, eventually one of those games land in a stadium in Florida. That is quite a coup.
But this is all speculation.

I'm assuming that, if a deal were already done between FSU and the B1G, you would know it.

There are always contingencies for other directions to pursue should one opportunity fail to materialize.
Then there are the legalities, and that as we all know can be problematic at times.

Florida State board chairman signals school's intent to leave ACC

"We have gotten a lot of counsel on that document, and that will not be a document that keeps us from taking action," FSU board chairman Peter Collins said in regards to the ACC grant of rights. "I'll leave it at that."

Oh, they're going somehow, but the report as presented is blarney. The revisionist story is now being fashioned and disseminated.

Based on what I just heard from the FSU BOT meeting, the Athlon report has been debunked as far as the FSU movement is concerned. Someday maybe, but not this week.
Nobody wants to leave. They just want to get the money a little closer. And I believe one way or another they’ll do that and keep the band together.

I hope they do. It would be for the best. But even if their TV partners would agree to negotiate early, I don't see how in the world they can come up with the kind of money that's already out there. The product doesn't warrant it. They not only would need to come up with much more money, but throw in unequal distribution to get close to what FSU wants. It's a tall mountain to climb.

Eh, I doubt kids from Florida are suddenly going to look at going to Rutgers or Minnesota just because FSU and Miami are now in the Big 10.

And yet,

https://thescarletfaithful.com/kevi...ball-recruiting-wide-receiver-defensive-back/

There is a reason why people in much higher places in the B1G are coveting the Florida market, and the SEC is wanting to protect that market for themselves.

In the context of my post, I'm speaking of players who would not have otherwise considered Big 10 schools. Of course kids from Florida already go to Big 10 schools. In OSU's 2023 class, 4 of their 19 players were from Florida.

And, this kid is a 3* and the #617 ranked player. It looks like he was heavily favored to Louisville and not really considering any Florida programs. I don't know much about him, but I'd wager it's because other schools had commitments from or were pursuing better players at the position. Or he could just be one of those kids who decided he wanted to play away from home.

How can the SEC protect the Florida market for themselves? SEC has one program in Florida. ACC has two.

So imagine if the SEC for all intents and purposes could put a fence around the state. How could anyone argue against that situation ?

By adding FSU and Miami?

I just don't see what it matters. By and large, SEC is still going to get the cream of the crop in terms of players in the southeast, no matter what FSU and Miami do. And adding FSU and Miami does nothing to change the championship profile of the conference.

Old business adage. Never willingly let you competitor expand in your territory.
I'm going to leave it at that.

You’re thinking too small in this. This is way bigger than recruiting and football.

And if they try, make them wish they hadn't done so!

Rumor has it that QT had a "gentleman's agreement" with Spinx that if you stay out of our GA market we will stay out of your SC market. Spinx built a station north of Atlanta any way and the war was on. QT came into the Greenville market (home base for Spinx) and crushed them with a mass expansion and continues to expand into other SC markets.

Just swapping one competitor for another.

That is, if you even want to consider the Big 10 a competitor.

Since 2007 they have 1 national title. SEC has 31.

Adding FSU and Miami doesn't move the needle for them. SEC gonna be alright.

Yes. If FSU wanted to leave AND could leave AND had a plan to leave, they'd just do it. That they keep going public with stuff like this tells you they are just trying to squeeze someone for more money.

Everything they've done publicly tells you they are not in a position of power. The BOT presented the financial situation as dire. Dire.

The one BOT member said the GOR was the least of his concerns. Well, ok then, why haven't they announced a plan to leave? Either he's full of it (most likely case) or they can break the GOR but nobody wants them.

So we're supposed to believe that (1) the situation is dire and (2) you aren't concerned about being able to break the GOR but you still aren't doing anything about leaving.

Lots of posturing in that room yesterday, but all of it was pointing in one direction - elsewhere. That was part of Talking Season. Now comes the hard part, but they are determined because they know the truth. Top-tier success will be hard to achieve and maintain by any underfunded program by the time the SEC and Big 10 deals have been in force for several years.

And they may have a pretty good restraint of trade argument. The GOR is akin to a “non-compete agreement”. NCAs have certain limitations in geography and length of time. If NCAs are too broad they can be deemed to be overreaching and hamper normal business practices and as a result can be limited in scope. Hence, restraint of trade.
