Think it's time to start the thread. Makes a ton of sense on both sides:

A&M - Big Oil isn't ponying up $77M to hire a guy like Mike Elko. He's been a cute story. And he's going to win 7 games this year at Duke. And yes, I know his QB got hurt. Doesn't change anything. That ain't moving the needle. Money isn't an issue after just securing a $160M check from their fundraising arm. With OU/UT coming to the SEC, they can't afford to take a risk. It makes me want to puke, but I think Dabo is as close to a can't miss as they could hope for.

Dabo - IF it's true that Clem is coming to the SEC, I've held true that it would be the end of the Dabo era. He's going to jump. He's going to do what is necessary to protect his personal brand. And he knows how much tougher it's going to be for Clem to compete in the SEC. Divisions are going away, so you're not having to deal with Bama/LSU every year. He would be at a place that would make him the highest paid coach in America, AND let him hire the highest paid assistants in America. And give him $20-30M in NIL funds to sign top classes. Jimbo didn't have the stones to manage it. I think Dabo does.

Dabo was aske about it today. Here is his "no comment" answer...very interesting. How much more can Clem afford to pay Dabo?? He's either looking for a raise, or legit thinking about jumping.

I don't really see it. Why would you go somewhere you're almost guaranteed to fail? And, by fail, I mean fail to contend for a title at a school that hasn't won one in almost a century.

On the other hand, I think Dabo feels betrayed by Clemson fans, and rightly so. He transformed the program into more than could have ever fathomed. Now they act like they're too good to have a down year.

I think if they win out and finish 9-4, fans will be content and things will settle down. If they lose another game or 2, I can see the fans getting unjustifiably up in arms and Dabo saying "screw y'all."

It would actually be funny to see them run off the best coach they ever had and sink back to their second-tier status because of it.

Besides money, Why would you leave Clemson with that schedule? Even in a down year they are winning. If it's his personal brand then winning cures all.

I don't think you can discount Dabo's arrogance. Would it make sense for him to leave Tatertown? No, definitely not. But if A&M threw enough money at him, perhaps he'd make the jump to prove just how "great" he really is.

This. A&M is undervalued stock. There are faaaaar more reasons they should be national title contenders than reasons they're not.

It could be a match made in heaven. A&M is basically pre-Dabo Clemson. Usually pretty good, but never able to get over the hump. Put Dabo, an established proven recruiter, at A&M with their resources and talent-rich area. He might be able to do for them what he did for Clemson.

Smack Dabo around all we want (though you admitted in the Jimbo discussion that the ACC-to-SEC smack talk was really just Clemson hate) he has performed very well against SEC schools.

Bingo. There was absolutely NOTHING in Clem's history that would suggest he would be able to win 2 NCs, 4 straight CFP appearances, and 11 straight 10 win seasons. He saw potential. A&M has A LOT more potential than Clem did at that time.

I honestly wouldn't rule out him taking a gander into the NFL openings either.
Me too...probably less stress on a NFL HC than college. Sure, they get canned quicker. But they just get recycled into another organization. It's a good fraternity to be in.

A big difference in A&M and pre-Dabo Clemson is that A&M is in the SEC and pre-Dabo Clemson was in an ACC that was FSU, Clemson and the 8 dwarfs. FSU faded pretty soon after Dabo arrived and that left Dabo in the catbird seat in a weak as water P5 conference that Clemson could sail through with maybe one competitive game per season and the easiest conference championship game ever. Clemson had a pretty much unobstructed path to the CFP for years compared to the other P5 conferences.

A&M doesn't have that in any way, shape or form.

You're right about path to the CFP. However, in terms of team status/standing, A&M is pre-Dabo Clemson.

You may be right but I don’t think that is his thing. His style won’t resonate in the nfl and he doesn’t want it to.
True but let's be honest he doesn't call plays or anything. He just manages a roster and relies on his coordinators which is the most NFL thing you can do. That isn't a knock on him as that is what Beamer and a ton of other coaches do as well.

Right. There are very, very few college coaches who actually call plays anymore.

Of course, every head coach retains the right to override a call in certain situations. In this regard, I'm sure Dabo is no different than 98% of college coaches.

That said, Dabo, also like almost every college who has tried it, would be a flop in the NFL. His style would NOT resonate one bit. This why college coach after college coach has tried and failed in the NFL. In college, you're dealing with kids right out of high school. In the pros, you'll be dealing with grown men. Also, in college, the coach is THE boss. In the NFL, much of the roster management and such is dictated from the top.

I have heard that he is not, and would never be interested in the Bama job.

I don't know who would be. Whoever goes after Saban WILL fail. It's pre-determined.

The Bama job is such that if you don't win the title, or at least compete for it, the season is a failure. Heaven forbid a guy come in and go 9-3 his first 2 seasons.

Yep. He's a Bama guy and fully understands the atmosphere there.

Bama fans are bit like Clemson fans in this regard.

Obviously, Bama has a fantastic championship history, but they did go 29 years and only won one title. In that time they had 12 years where they finished unranked. From 1997-2007, they were perfectly average and only finished ranked 3 times.

So, all that to say, even at Alabama, it still takes the right coach. More coaches have failed there than succeeded.

Yep. That's why I laugh whenever someone uses the term "shingle school". Ain't no such thing. Without the right guy leading, any program is susceptible to mediocrity.

That’s always been the gamecock narrative but I don’t buy it. When he is winning he is not calling plays and when he’s not he is. You discredit him all you want but he took nobody coordinators on offense and won 2 national championships. The man knows X’s and O’s way more than you care to admit. My glasses are not that deep a garnet.

Why would you leave a school that would basically have to be completely insane to fire you. Where you by contract pretty much have to be one of the highest 3 paid coaches in the country.

Is he though. I was born and raised in a town I don’t care to go back to. He has made his life in Clemson. All his children grew up in Clemson. Clemson is just as much his home as anywhere else.

Yeah. Just saying he was raised in it. When to school in it. Coached in it. He understands it, and doesn't want any part of it. And I don't blame him.

Isn't the expectation the same at TAM, just minus the history?
Their fans and donors are expecting a miracle.

No, it's not a narrative it is the case. Granted he has ran the same system with multiple coordinators so obviously he is the one behind the scenes orchestrating everything. He is the head coach of a major D1 program nobody is sitting here saying he doesn't know anything about football lmao. However, he isn't Jimbo fisher on the sidelines running the offense play by play. He has the influence to recommend what they should do in critical situations or to decide to go for it or run something else, but he isn't calling defense or offense play by play. A lot of national championship coaches didn't ever call plays either.

I fully agree. I sure am glad someone else said it. It's a ridiculous notion for our fans to contend that Dabo really doesn't understand X's and O's. Let's start with the fact that not a single one of us is privy to any coaches meetings at Clemson. However, you don't win 2 national titles, play for 2 others and win 10 or more games a season 12 years in a row if you don't know what you're doing. Simple as that. Hate on his personality all you want. He obviously knows football and knows it very well. Has he had a couple great QBs? Yep. Has he had some great assistants. Yep. But that all just goes to further support that he knows what he's doing.

Here's some harsh perspective. In 131 years of football, we have won 630 games. In 16 years of coaching, Dabo has won 167 games. That's more 25% of all our victories, ever.

I don't think arrogance would be why. If he does it, it'll definitely be because he's very loyal and feels it's more of a one way street than he felt it was a year ago. No reason not to chase the bag if you stayed where you are for loyalty and realized it isn't valued. Anyone would chase the bag after feeling that.

Then you are not looking hard because I have seen him mentioned in talking head articles more than once. That doesn’t mean he’s on a&m list because I think he would quickly tell them thanks no thanks.
