By expanding to 16 teams, you would have 8 first round games rather than 4. That more than makes up the revenue gapNope. SEC Championship game is like a bonus major bowl/playoff game, except SEC gets BOTH halves of the revenue. Same for Big 10 and every other conference. They're not going anywhere. And, secondarily, with so many teams in each conference, it's the only way to have a half-way legitimate conference champion.
Nope. Why expand to 16 and eliminate conference championship games when you can expand to 16 and keep the conference championship games? And don't say "too many games." Nobody cares. Nobody.By expanding to 16 teams, you would have 8 first round games rather than 4. That more than makes up the revenue gap
This. Go ahead and expand the playoffs, and get rid of conference championships having any impact on the selection process. And by the way.....expand the playoff to 16. Conference titles will mean even less, because there's no bye to be earned.
Who really cares about this? Nowadays conferences are nothing more than 'alliances' who schedule each other to make the most money. Heck, if you have 4 teams at 7-2 or whatever, award them all titles. Keeps fans engaged. And, secondarily, with so many teams in each conference, it's the only way to have a half-way legitimate conference champion.
When the playoff expands, there will be pushback on the conference title games. It'll heat up big time.Nope. Why expand to 16 and eliminate conference championship games when you can expand to 16 and keep the conference championship games? And don't say "too many games." Nobody cares. Nobody.
Yep. This should be a very clear indication of where the SEC (and Big 10) stand on conference championship games. They don't want to eliminate them. They want to add to them. More revenue they get to keep and not share with other conferences. They couldn't care less about a 17-game season. A few years after this goes through, they'll be pushing to make the conference championship a 4-team conference playoff, adding an 18th game.I read somewhere that the SEC is discussing the addition of 3-4 game on the afternoon prior to the SECCG in the evening for both Additional Revenue and to give the CFP Committee clear differentiation between the #3 & #4 teams.
they'll get out of the champ game requirement with a 9th regular season game.Espns 10 year deal with the SSC includes the championship game so I’d guess it’s going nowhere. Plus I’d imagine the broadcast rights to that far outweigh an additional team getting in the playoff.
This will happen in the next playoff format. The current format is only for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Expect a 14-team playoff with 4 guaranteed bids for the Big 10 and SEC starting in 2026.They need to work it out so both teams in the championship game gets into playoffs. The winner gets a bye and loser plays in first round. Expand the playoffs to accommodate.
they arent gonna give 4 guarneteed bigs to 2 of the conference and not the other 2.This will happen in the next playoff format. The current format is only for the 2024 and 2025 seasons. Expect a 14-team playoff with 4 guaranteed bids for the Big 10 and SEC starting in 2026.
I’m assuming the schools would have to vote for this and I am not sure they would get a majority. The 3rd place team will more than likely always get into the playoffs and are sitting in the catbird seat. They don’t have to risk losing a game that will potentially knock them out or injury with an additional game.Yep. listen to the coaches talk. They've been against 9 game schedules for years and its yet to happen.I’m assuming the schools would have to vote for this and I am not sure they would get a majority. Nope, too much money to be made. Should they be? Yes.With the playoff - they might do more damage than help.
Ultimately, the SEC and Big 10 will get what they want. There may be a 2nd guaranteed bid for ACC and Big 12 involved, but if the SEC and Big 10 want 4 guaranteed bids, I bet they ultimately get them.I’m assuming the schools would have to vote for this and I am not sure they would get a majority. Don’t see it. You have three big opponents to overcome to get rid of it.With the playoff - they might do more damage than help.
The sec and big 10 cant pull out at this point. They are stuck for the immediate future.. and they are tied in with the other two conference. Each having an equal vote. There is zero way the other two are going to yield those spots and that power to the Big10 and SEC. If one gets it, all will.Ultimately, the SEC and Big 10 will get what they want. I took the Kiffin quote as a guy that wasn’t going to make it anyway and tried to turn it into a positive. If he really doesn’t want to be the first guy to lead Ole Miss to Atlanta, then that’s some pretty 17ing weak рussy аss sнit.listen to the coaches talk. They've been against 9 game schedules for years and its yet to happen.
Kiffin coming out and saying that there are teams that dont want to play in the game.. because the risk/reward isnt there..... Is loud.
think he'd rather be the first guy to lead his team to the playoffs and be set up as best as possible for a run at a national championship.... but i get what your sayingI took the Kiffin quote as a guy that wasn’t going to make it anyway and tried to turn it into a positive. I think he knows how to play the media and the fanbase. He can say “other coaches are telling me they don’t want to play in the conference championship”, but realistically, he knows his fanbase thought this was the year they might finally make it to Atlanta and he has almost zero chance of making that happen. The smart play here is questioning if going to a conference championship game is even a good thing. He’s got the media debating the question, so I guess it’s working.say what you want about kiffin.. but he's one of the morestraight shootersmedia savvy coaches in the business.
Without divisions they don’t hold as much appeal. Add the playoff and your point holds. Why bother? With the playoff - they might do more damage than help.
i dont disagree with all of this.... but i think fan base was more playoffs or bust... than it ever was atlanta or bust.I think he knows how to play the media and the fanbase. I feel certain that the SEC & Big 10 already have this worked out although the rest of college football may not be aware. The SEC & Big 10 have all the money and leverage. The underlying threat from the SEC & Big 10 will always be that these two conference will just hold their own exclusive playoff and everyone else can figure out a plan for themselves. They need to work it out so both teams in the championship game gets into playoffs. The winner gets a bye and loser plays in first round. Expand the playoffs to accommodate.
The SEC & Big 10 have made it clear that they will abandon the CFP if the other conference don't play by their rules.Ultimately, the SEC and Big 10 will get what they want.
