Ah. Freddie Solomon. I sat in the old stadium and watched the magic of Freddie Solomon in the Shrine Bowl. I was estatic when Paul Dietzel announced he had signed with us. Back then prospects could sign in December I believe, but it wasn't valid til the national signing date in February. Because of the ACC 800 rule he was not eligible, although he qualified by NCAA standards. Solomon was just one of many but I think he and Issac Jackson a rb from Macon were the ones that broke the camel's back. When I moved to Georgia in 1968, the UGA roster was loaded with S. C. kids many of them due to the 800 ACC rule. Frank Howard lamented the loss of Kent Lawrence a stand out rb from Daniel H. S. who starred at Georgia. I don't regret for one minute the break with the ACC. USC was never going to get a break from the power of Tobacco Road.
If you can't score at least a 900 per the old SAT standards, then you really ought to focus on your classes, not athletics.

Gee, even when in the ACC and adhering to the standards we agreed to abide by, we still put a mostly mediocre product on the gridiron.

Again, USC just ended up in the middle of a feud between McGuire and the ACC.

Yeah…they had this “symbolic instrument” called the “Southern Letter-of-Intent”. Gentlemen’s agreement that all of the schoools around the southeast generally honored. Like you said, though, not officially binding until the national letter was signed in February. I remember Easley’s Stanley Morgan signing with us in December of ‘72, just after the Shrine Bowl. Once it was time for the REAL LOI to be signed, he went with Tennessee.

This still upsets me. USC was a founding member of the ACC and deserved to be treated with respect.
One thing is Bad Karma is catching up with those ACC _________. Their conference may collapse and I hope so. The only reason it hasn't already collapsed is because of their GOR. Why the ACC teams agreed to that is hard to understand. They had to promise to pay seventy seven septillion $ if they wanted to leave.
Even worse is the fact that USC practically begged to be re-admitted in the late 70s but the ACC ever vindictive said ok but you gotta pay the ACC for the bowls you attended. In other words, NO.
Will be a happy moment when they go the way of the Big East. No other strong conference really wants Duke but might take them to get UNC.

BTW, look what Mack is doing at UNC and to think our fantastic, brilliant, unequaled AD could have hired him instead of he who shall not be named.
Mac is in the ACC….he is also about ready to retire again. ACC schedule along with the ooc games = 7-8 wins minimum

I'll point out to you that one of those S. C. kids graduated from law school and served as a judge until his retirement. Maybe the SAT was a poor indicator for him and no doubt many others. Maybe part of that mediocre performance was due to losing otherwise qualified kids to our opponents who won with them. By the way, I'm with McGuire in the feud.

If we can find a more accurate measurement that the SAT/ACT to predict classroom success, I'm all for it.

Think about it - you want to admit someone to school who can't even keep a "C" average in the classroom (1.6 GPA), then expect him to spend an inordinate amount of time on athletics when the time would best be spent on academics to improve classroom performance? All the more reason to support minor league football for those who really aren't cut out for the classroom.

A main reason why UnCarolina forced McGuire's resignation was his poor bookkeeping skills regarding expenses. Jeeze, why didn't he "hire someone" to keep tabs?

I'm with neither Cameron nor McGuire in the feud.
