Kudos to Franklin. Make that much money at a place that doesn't mandate commensurate performance.

Dan Mullen just kicked his dog.

I was feeling good about the MSU game. But if the Mel Tucker saga is an indicator we’ll probably get flattened 57 to 3 or so. That should be a psychopathic thread worthy event.

Nothing is that serious. Your boner over this notwithstanding, it’s still just college football. Most likely he’d get fired. I know you’re edging at the thought all this. Settle down.
Nope, most coaches get fired. It's okay. CJF is a very rich man. I'm happy for him and his beautiful family. He was not born with a silver spoon in his mouth. He has earned his way. I'm close with someone who went all thru school with him and he's a good guy. Playing in the PSAC at East Stroudsburg is no fast track to riches either. It isn't a crime to be happy for someone when something good happens for them. Although you wouldn't know it hanging around here.:cautious:

Mullen should kick himself. He had a lifetime gig and pissed it away for a 10-3 type season. He won't hurt for a job, but still.
Totally agree. I was joking about the tale of two coaches with similar success in prior seasons and struggles over the past two. One gets canned, and the other successfully leverages his employer for more dough.

Idiotic play by the administration. We could go .500 over the next 4 years, need to pay him $40-50MM to fire him, and need to pick up something like a $20MM buyout for a better coach all because other schools can negotiate better. We’re stuck with a huge bill and/or crappy teams if he doesn’t turn things around.

The buyout by the coach to leave should always be higher than the buyout for the school to fire. But no schools negotiate that way and as a result, all of this dead money is out there to pay for the Orgerons and Hermans and Fuentes of the world to not coach their team. I don't want Franklin fired but it would be nice if the incentive for him to flirt with other jobs be a lot lower because of his buyout responsibility (which the hiring school would pay anyway).

As it is, we've got 10 more years of bad clock management, crappy scoreboard math, and more quizzical in-game decisions. I'm sure the snark will be at a high on here if Sparty wins on Saturday.

I'm 100% behind this move. I think CJF is the right guy and removing any uncertainty is a good thing. I don't like the fact that schools have to spend this kind of money on making kids feel special- getting to play used to be enough- but that is the world we live in.

I’m just here to watch the melt down. Me, I’m very happy James is back.
LOL. He runs a good program and to me (a real old timer) he is clearly his own man......but embodies many of the same attributes that JVP used to make this a special program. Those of us who have dedicated our lives to coaching know that you can't win them all. The key is to win enough, so that you can stay around long enough......to teach.
There has to be more to football than blocking and tackling. There are values and lessons to be imparted and that is a coaches biggest responsibility (IMO).
In the coaching business, a play call is understood to be a matter of "who has the chalk last." But insisting on discipline and good character and modeling those qualities are non negotiable.

What uncertainty does it remove in your eyes? What if he goes 21-5 over the next two years? Where does that put us in terms of having him locked down?

What do you think is missing that has led to 11-10 over last two years?
I choose to separate the two years. Last season I attribute to a sudden dearth of on field leadership. I understand that there will be those who disagree but losing Parsons left the defense without its difference maker. Not only his physical prowess but his absence allowed lesser forms of "leadership"to percolate in the huddle. I'd rather not say more about that.
Offensively losing perhaps one of the top 5 RB in the country along with a; very capable Noah Cain left SC feeling that he needed to carry the burden and hence he made poor decisions by pressing. I would also point out that while everyone had challenges, it was impossible with a new OC.
I also want to add that if we could have a confidential conversation with CJF, he would tell you that there was a real problem with missed practices due to an issue with false positives.

This year is simple. If Cliff doesn't get hurt, we beat Iowa and Illinois. No question. 9-2 at this point would have been the top of the line performance for this group IMO. ( if you were to trace my predications on the old site, I said this was an 8-4 team.
Now for those who want to blame the back up QB situation on the coaches......have at it. But most kids don't transfer to be backups.

I think that recruiting is always impacted negatively by any perceived uncertainty- and while you can never cast anything in stone, this certainly helps

I utterly enjoy the agony of the keyboard coaches. Why would I want to change my outlook? They just got a 10 year sentence. I really enjoy and like Coach Franklin. I see Drew Allar approves as well.
I really enjoy and like Franklin as well. This season has made me seriously question his coaching ability though. That said, I hope he wins here because I really, really want him to succeed.

Nothing on his resume warrants this type of extension. His teams are just barely better than .500 these last two seasons. He is 1-7 against OSU and 2-13 against the top 10. PSU just got taken to the cleaners by this guy for the third time. Win for the fanboys. PSU athletics needs to adopt a policy of no contract negotiations during the season. His constant will he stay or will he go drama during the season has had an impact on the team’s performance.

CJF is all in and so am I... It's time we put all of our differences aside and get behind this program. The best is yet to come!

Good, we need stability , a good class coming in and the assistants seem to be settling in also.

Coach has been bitten by major player injuries and illnesses Clifford, P.J., Journey, Noah, scheduling issues with the Big 10,( open against a big opponent on the road , Iowa consistently as a cross division opponent) but most of all lost a lot of players via the portal. CJF will straighten this out. We will be better .

I'm not thrilled that this had to happen during the season and I question how the negotiations affected Franklin's focus.

There is no excuse for Illinois. The michigan loss made me miserable. Some of the conference losses the last few years still really piss me off.

And a new contract to him means what? We get one year off before we have to put up with more contract BS?

If you're Pro-Franklin, today was a good day (obviously).

If you're Anti-Franklin today was still a good day because of the commitment the university is making to be at the forefront of college football in terms of facilities, financial investment, support. The stakes have been raised.

That’s pretty good teacher’s pay, even for the best. You could probably hire 100 of them for the money. Misplaced priorities. But who am I to argue with the marketplace?
