I heard that was the case soon after Saban stepped down. It's a different person's game nowadays.

I often wonder if Joe, Bo, Woody or the Bear were around, how they would have handled these types of situations.

Obvious Nick was not a fan of the current state of things given how hard he lobbied to have Congress do something about it. Writing on the wall though with the SC decision and more recent one telling the NCAA to f*ck off.

The same way, I suspect.

I was never a huge fan because I think Bama cheated to get recruits, but appreciate his take. Paying players was always the right thing to do; the NCAA just let it get to a point that the worst possible version of that became the standard.

Yeah, he was rumored to be the headmaster of the brown paper bag....sort of felt like once he could no longer corner the market on 5* kids, he bounced. That said, he is a useful voice in restoring what many of us think the college game should be about onward.

Not so sure about that. What makes you think this?

There are countless stories of bagmen and cars, and websites dedicated to Bama’s elite use of oversigning/processing. Some are documented here:

At current rate, I’m not far behind him as a fan of CFB that is getting to the point of saying F it. Ohio State is trying to buy their way to a NC because Day knows he needs to beat Michigan and win a NC. If he succeeds then someone like an Oregon or Texas will spend even more money to buy their way to the top. Penn State shouldn’t, won’t, and most importantly, can’t do that.

Well, based on this, I can understand your opinion. That said, I'm generally skeptical of hearsay, particularly when it comes from sources who may have had some sort of an axe to grind. At this point, I no longer much care. College football as we knew it is pretty much dead, and I don't see a path to fix it.

I have no idea if Bama cheated or not but, like you, I need some solid proof. Are the car photos enough? It's a start. I think the general consensus at the Iowa wrestling board is that Penn State has bought it's way to the top. Have we? I think not, and they do have an axe to grind, but nothing would surprise me. Just give me proof.

Did you see the pics of all the Bama players with cars? The Yahoo Sports articles naming individuals who served as middlemen for payments? You can believe what you want but those kids were getting improper benefits for years. The difference is no one in Tuscaloosa is going to kill their golden goose including the police and newspapers.

Quite a few former Bama players admitted getting cars and other gifts while at Bama. Here's one:

....on Wednesday night. Leon O’Neal Jr., who is currently a rookie in the NFL after signing as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers, also spoke out.

O’Neal was a four-star recruit in the Class of 2018 and chose Texas A&M over Alabama. He said that every Crimson Tide football player received a Dodge Charger upon their commitment while he was driving a Nissan Maxima.

Every player there had a scatpack hell cat before NIL I was in a Nissan Maxima lol it had a sun roof though 😂 https://t.co/dXocibXYYu

Saban due to his length of coaching was old school because he was a young buck when these guys were coaching. Can’t think of one coach that reminds me of old school coaching. He left on top!

He bounced because what? Bama finished in top 3 classes last 5 years and several number 1’s and he just won the sec and played in the cfp. Cmon man.

All of that may be true, or some of it, or none of it. Regardless, cheating is probably rampant throughout the sport, and Bama has always had a leg up in recruiting due to their success over decades. They are and long have been the preeminent program in the game.

I personally saw a text from an Alabama coach to a guy handling the recruiting of a high school kid offering illegal benefits for the kid to make an unofficial visit.

Alabama is what it is, but those people at least show respect to us. Look at the current "champions". They will never show an ounce of respect to us, or anyone else. I'm so glad that the CURSE of playing them every year is over.

Not disagreeing he continued to have a ton of success but let's not act like he wasn't noticing what the future looked like. Have you seen the roster/NIL overhaul at places like Ole Miss? I am sure it was a confluence of several things...he is getting up there in age, players want $$$, recruit and re-recruit your roster every year, coupled with other programs investing serious $$$ to get more competitive quickly.

He's FOS and had a $$$ advantage pre NIL that was pretty big. They level the playing field a bit and while they are still good, they aren't what they were just 5-6 years back. Blaming the players and all the other nonsense when his teams were getting a Dodge fleet every year in addition to cash is a joke. Really good coach, but I don't buy this BS for a second. They leveled the playing field so his players have options and he cannot be the little Napoleon controlling freak he was.

He probably thought. I won the sec I went to cfp and I’m the greatest ever and these kids are really a pain in the a$$.
So I will be on tv instead.

I think you just made his point.
Ahhhh, so the idea is to be above it all even though the actual rules have changed and then when failure inevitably happens its a built in excuse and you can pretend to be "better people."? Being a Penn State fan must be horrible

No, not an excuse, nor is being "better people" the point. It's just that with the changed rules, to some of us it really is not college football as we once knew it to be. I know you're feeling it after winning the National Title this year, despite breaking the rules. Congrats.

And it’s pretty much what you think it is. Good for him though.

I admire Saban for the beatings he gave the rest of the SEC, the beating he gave Clemson in the on-side kick championship, and the year he had 2 100 yard RBs against us when he was at Michigan State BUT it seems rich that he would think the kids he recruited came to 'Bama for anything other than the bag. Now that everyone can act like an Alabama Booster with a car dealership, I can understand how newly enlightened southerners would wilt under competitive pressures...particularly at his age

I don’t know if Alabama cheated under Saban but they asked out of a game with Penn State years ago after being slapped with sanctions for cheating. As the old saying in the SEC goes if you ain’t cheating you ain’t trying.
