It did take Spurrier some time to really get things going, BUT what he did to keep the fan base energized was start making us competitive in games where we'd traditionally struggled.
In Year 1, we lost to UGA by 2 and beat UT and UF. Beating UT and UF in the same season bought him several years of credibility on its own. The next season we beat Clemson. In '07 we beat UGA and #8 UK (yeah, we all know how the season ended). In '08 we beat UT again.
There were obvious disappointments. The aforementioned end to the '07 season. Losing to Vandy in back-to-back seasons, but the promising wins were sprinkled in. The gave hope that change was coming, and it was.
We have not any such hope yet. To Shane's credit, we're winning games that we were losing the last couple years under Muschamp. But we have yet to beat a good team under Beamer. Granted, it's only Year 2. However, not only have we not beat a good team, we're not even playing the good teams competitively. If he could find a way to upset UT (not happening) or Clemson (slightly less likely to not happen) that would go a long way towards calming the fan base. At some point, we need to be competitive with and beat a good team.
