Sadly, I'm not surprised. There has been evil in the world from day one. And there will be evil in the world to the end of time. Don't know whether or not he is retired. But even if he is, I would think that friends of his, assuming he has friends, would be wary of being associated with him due to him being a rogue individual in society.
