It’s going to take time to gel, a lot of teams struggle and look like crap early on when they have a lot of new faces. Jan’s addressed the lack of SG/wings/slashers, outside scoring threat.

All of the guards can shoot but when shots aren’t falling they are all pretty good at driving and getting to the basket as well. That last couple of years we really haven’t seen that or had the players that could do it.

Yeah, hopefully we won’t have the entire team sucking at making shots at the same time too often. That was brutal.

Not gonna lie…I was dog cussing this team at the end of the first half!

Don’t get me wrong, th start of the second half was AMAZING, but we can’t afford to start slow against the Kentucky’s, Auburn’s, Tennesse’s, UTX’s, etc that are coming up on our conference slate…
You weren’t the only one. That first half was one of the worst halves of offensive basketball that I’ve seen in awhile, and Hubbard and FTs were really the only reasons that it got better in the second. Then, while you have to give the team credit for going inside when the perimeter shots weren’t falling, Murphy and Nwoku couldn’t get anything to drop under the basket either.

That said, I have to give the team a lot of credit for finding a way to win against a solid Utah team in spite of a terrible offensive night. I could easily see Utah in the tournament mix

Utah was picked to be near the bottom of the Big 12 but the Big 12 is very deep in basketball. It’s the best conference in college basketball.

I'm sure Jans was too.

I get the feeling that Jans loved being down big at halftime yesterday. It's a great early test for the team, in a game that didn't matter so much because it's on a neutral court. He obviously isn't going to tell the team that, but sitting Cam for a chunk of the first half tells me he was okay with it. Jans has to sit him early to keep him from getting in foul trouble. He doesn't trust him in the first half to reign in his emotion, so I think we'll see more games this year where we are down early or don't look in sync for stretches (especially defensively) because Mook is stuck on the bench. It makes me nervous, but we are going to have to do it if we want him in the game at the end.

Also Jans knows what being down at half does to Hubbard, especially in a game where the other team is raining 3's while shutting him down. That absolutely flips his baller switch to the ON position.

Wow, I didn’t realize that but I guess it makes sense based on what I saw yesterday. I definitely wouldn’t say that they’ve got a bunch of 5* athletes, but they’ve go guys that know their roles and they play those roles pretty effectively

And we didn’t shoot the 3 ball that well. If we can consistently make free throws and play defense, we are going to beat some really good teams.
I see our lack of an inside game as our down fall. The defense is not great at staying between the ball and the goal but Jans usually cures this the later the season gets. Although, you can't make an inside game without inside players. We will live and die by long range shooting.

If I was Jans I would tell the team there are no more warm up games. Every game now is important to the season and post season. Every single one. Bring your A game or sit on the pine.

I think they understand that by their postgame comments after the Utah game. They said they treated it with the intensity of a game in March.

I don’t know if Utah is an NCAAT team but they seemed solid.

Current KenPom rankings for upcoming opponents:

SMU - 69
UNLV - 95
Butler - 88 OR Northwestern - 51
Pitt -16

For context we are 28 and Utah is 54. Looking down the road, Memphis is 36 and McNeese is 101.

Just a really good job of scheduling by Jans. Proof that you don’t have to schedule Duke or Kansas to schedule well.

We’re a far cry from when Stans was the coach and said, I want to say on more than one occasion, that he didn’t understand the RPI.

Stans had more than one team that was good enough to be in the tourney but didn’t make it because we scheduled atrociously and lost games to teams like Rider.
