At the fear of coming off arrogant, I’m going to quote myself and share a quick story from a summer class when I was in commmunity college in the early 90s (probably ‘94). I was taking an evening micro economics class in a big forum classroom with about 300 seats. first day or two I started talking to the guy behind me who it turned out was taking the class to count at Penn State, where he was a student. One night a few weeks in a massive thunderstorm blows in and kills the electricity. Complete darkness without even emergency lights coming on. Professor tell us to hold tight while he tries to figure out what to do. Behind me I hear the kid’s backpack opening up and the unmistakable sound of bottle hitting bottle. I turned around into the darkness and whispered, ”Do you have beer?” “He said, “Yeah, do you want one? I always carry a 6 pack with me.” We had two each before the professor dismissed us for the evening.
An odd memory I hadn’t thought about until this thread came up. Thanks for the thread and jogging that memory!
That's a great story! Reminds me of my graduation in Schwab Auditorium in the late 80's and champagne bottles popping the whole time. Graduates hid the champagne bottles in our long robs before entering.

You’re joking, right?
Yes haha… some here have a running thing of poking fun at former PSU Pres Eric Barron over the upcoming new art museum. It gets touted as a signature achievement from his tenure, whereas all the while Penn State struggled in academic rankings (so I’m told on here) and tuition continued to rise.

Seriously though, I don’t think I would change much. My PSU grades, especially during my first few semesters, weren’t up to par with the academic standards I had in high school… but that is because I was busy coming out of my shell and growing more socially confident. And that is by far the area in which I needed to grow the most. I went from having been a deeply shy and awkward teenager to joining a fraternity (something I never, ever could have seen myself doing) to eventually becoming President of our chapter. And yes, there were lots of drinking and ill-advised shenanigans along the way, but I also had to learn to lead a team in keeping the house budget, paying the mortgage, paying an employee (our house cook), and organizing events and meetings. I came away with interpersonal and leadership skills that simply didn’t exist within me when I arrived at PSU. And oh yes, pulled my grades up well enough to graduate With Distinction and with several good job offers in hand. All in all it was a fantastic experience.

Yeah, I’m familiar with the ongoing Art Museum/onion dip references. Didn’t know if you were serious, though. I’m sure there’s somebody who graduated from Penn State who would, in all seriousness, say they would visit the art museum.

Your high school-to-college experience isn’t too different from mine, plus I am convinced that developing my social skills while at PSU has been a tremendous asset in life, both personally and professionally. In fact, I used to joke that if I could do business in a bar, I’d be a billionaire.

Awesome. Hey, a lot of us have experienced a shift from the daily office grind to working mostly or completely at home thanks to the pandemic… perhaps we’re just one more disruptive societal event away from doing business primarily in bars! ;)

I would have gone onto law school and studied harder but I was mostly concerned with avoiding Viet Nam at the time, which I fortunately did. It’s a long story. I had to overcome a lot of adversity. Also I would have chosen a different barber. Anyway it all worked out eventually. Smoke em if you’ve got em.

Ugh, before I was driving age, I'd ride my bike on both of these streets and hated both of them. Piketown Rd was a one-time thing. Blue Ridge was much more often and could be just as difficult. Bike lanes were definitely not a thing on any of the area's streets.

Blue Ridge Avenue made a man out of me. I had to get to the top of that monster if I wanted to get to Turkey Hill and get a coke and a candy bar.

A bike tour went down BLA once, I think it was the tour de trump. I remember watching them fly by at the bottom of the neighborhood.

Honestly, don't think I'd change much in regard to Penn State.

I was always gonna go to Penn State, but there is a part of me that I wished I went to a city school those years. I grew up outside Linglestown, which is outside of Harrisburg. I've never really lived in a city.

I know long-term, I would probably hate it. But there is part of me that would've liked to have gotten that experience for a handful of years. Just something different from what I've experienced my entire life, which is suburbs and State College. Living in Philly or DC or Pittsburgh or wherever between 18-24ish, that's the time to live that experience if you're going to do it.

I've been to Austin a few times. Being a student at Texas would be so incredibly fun. A really fun school in a really fun town. Makes me always wonder what that kind of experience would be like.
Cities are way overrated. The 10% things available in a city that are not available in the suburbs either are prohibitively expensive or not the most healthy use of time. New York the city that never sleeps. PSU when the students are here is the town that never sleeps except during 8am classes.

The Eric Barren Grand Cathedral of The Arts (and such) is his signature win.

You sound a lot like me. I realized second semester of my freshman year that if I busted my butt (by the way, does anyone realize if you type in the word a s s it automatically posts three asterisks instead?) for a week or so during finals I could maintain decent grades, which allowed me to coast and party the rest of the semester. I felt like I had discovered a loophole and never understood why nobody else took this approach.

Then I grew up.

That is significantly better than my most memorable classroom story. We had a prof that didn't show up for a class, someone went to check his office and it turns out he had passed away there from a heart attack.

One regret I have from college is not growing my hair out. I looked like a bum anyway, I might as well have looked like a cool bum.

Quarantine finally afforded me the opportunity and it's awesome. Except for right now when hotter than hades.

My wife, also a Penn State grad, and I were just discussing our time at PSU in the mid-to-late 80s. We had completely different experiences: she was very studious, joined a service sorority, had a steady boyfriend, and didn’t party much. I, on the other hand, rarely if ever went to class, had tons of friends (guys and gals), and partied A LOT.

She said that if she could go back and do it again, she would have more of a social life. I, on the other hand, said if I could do it over now, I would go to class. We’ve been happily married for 30 years, so apparently opposites do attract.

Anyway, with the benefit of hindsight, what would you do differently? And don’t say everything!!
Regrets for not asking PSU cheerleader Antionette Giarratano aka Toni Tri Delt out on a date. Saw her near every day in the dining hall but couldn't muster up the courage to ask. Those of you who attended in the early 70s should know who she is. Damned she was fine then and still is!

It's clearly flag material. Thought about it but can't find a public pic from her PSU cheerleading days. I could post a recent pic but it would be inappropriate to violate her personal privacy. ;)

You already posted her name, so what's the problem with a pic?

If I am going back to school now, I am probably not at Penn State at the out of state price they charge now. When I went in the early 90's I only paid 4 to 5K more than the in-state students, but now it is double and I would most likely go to Maryland. Dealing with that now with my daughter who will be a senior. She wants to do Forensic Science and is applying to WVU, VCU and Towson. Unless she gets a lot of aide from the first two, she will probably be at Towson.

FYI if your daughter wants Forensic Science, Marshall university has a top ranked Forensic Science program, plus even for out of state students is very reasonable. They may even have a deal with students from Maryland to give them a tuition break as do other states that border WV, but IDK. Saying you went to MU for Forensic Science is almost like saying you went to MIT for physics, seriously.

My two oldest are in college and they went to private schools a hell of a lot cheaper than public schools would have been for them.
