Big reason for that: they were always on the field because the offense couldn’t sustain drives. Again: just like this year.

Sure, but an elite defense overcomes that.
Plus 2 of those losses were rather pedestrian Minnesota and MSU teams.
86 defense had a worse offense than 99 to deal with. Short of Miami, I never worried about that team giving up a lead.
I would trust this year's defense with a 2 score 4th quarter lead against darn near anyone. If we had a 10 pt lead going into the 4th quarter I would have been pretty darn confident.

Sorry....99 defense was overrated.
