Jim, I no longer want to cope. After this game, I think I've finally come to grips with the reality that Penn State will in all likelihood never be the football program it once was. I think that, for me anyway, this will be a more healthy outlook . Following them has become much more miserable than it is fun. As you no doubt know, there are far more satisfying interests in life than this. As an aside, one of the smarter things I did was cut ties with the University back in 2011 after the way it handled the Sandusky debacle. Time to move on in all facets.
Sounds like you should have given up when PSU joined the Big 10 because we had losing records against OSU, Michigan and Iowa in all the “glory years”. We’re better off now than we were in many of the years back in the day.

Hope springs eternal. Even in Joe's later years, we had 2005. We had 2008. (I think we would have matched up well with either Florida or Oklahoma in 2008. We didn't match-up at all with USC and it showed.) Given what we've seen after 10 years of Franklin's coaching limitations and the current landscape of CFB, what reason is there to believe we are on the cusp of joining the higher echelon of CFB?

I'll answer my own question with an admittedly unlikely answer: Michigan. At the end of 2020, Michigan and Harbaugh were left for dead. Heck, we had beaten them when we were 0-5. But now they're in their 3rd straight CFP. They've won 3 straight B1G championships. They've beaten OSU 3 years in a row. And they haven't lost a B1G game since mid-2021. I don't know what their NIL is and I don't think they're big portal players. So seeing their metamorphosis gives hope that maybe the same thing could happen here. But other than that, I don't see where the hope comes from.
Maybe we need to hire Conor Stalions.

What exactly is a JoeBot? I for one recognize and celebrate Paterno being one of the greatest college coaches of all time. However, he should have retired at least 10 years before 2011. He also was made the biggest scapegoat that I have ever seen over the Sandusky situation by spineless leaders who were only too happy to throw him under the bus to cover their butts. I also am a big Franklin supporter and defend him constantly against his many haters. Some people can walk and chew gum at the same time son.
i am referring to the remarks you will hear ....i have been told repeatedly that the Joe Bots should just leave....so unfortunately you didn't understand the sarcasm of the post....and yes i graduated 1980 so yes i am a JoeBot and believe he was terrific

First and foremost from a player standpoint: We need leadership. Last year was Sean Clifford. Some of our best in the past were Paul Poslusny and Brandon Short. The 2023 PSU team just seemed void of any leadership. We can blame the coaching staff all we want. However, there need to be players who are vocal can effectively motivate the others around them to play. I just did not see that this season...

I’m waiting for the day a player sees his team is not making the 12-team playoff, with say 3 games remaining, and opts out of the rest of the season.
The day is coming IMO.

OL
The day kids opt out of the playoff is coming....soon. All it takes is 1 to get the ball rolling. Most of these kids care way less than us about winning championships

I expect that to eventually happen. How soon?

Surprised it hasn't happened already,
I’m pretty certain a player last year played in the first 4 games, removed himself (when the team wasn’t doing well) to maintain a redshirt and announce he was entering the portal at the end of the year? I don’t remember the player or school.

You are where I am also. You are not a JoeBot. JoeBots will never admit he stayed too long and that he was human and had subpar game performances and seasons. They think he walked on water.

I think the defense had Chop, Carter, Jacobs and King. Yesterday, when Carter got hurt, the wheels came off. They were playing with an edge up until that point.

Next year, to be assured a spot in the playoffs, you’ll need to be 10-2 or 9-3 and lucky. If PS beats who they are supposed to beat, four games will determine the season: at USC, at West Virginia, home with OSU and home with Washington. Can they beat 2/4? And make sure they don’t blow one of the games they should win: Wisconsin, Maryland, Rutgres, …?

Michigan has Harbaugh as a head coach, Penn State has James Franklin you have no hope.

Harbaugh who turned around Stanford and then turned around the 49'rs and has a better overall record at Michigan than Bo versus Franklin who has not and cannot turn around anything but is elite at deflecting blame and hiring the next coordinator.

The NC State quarterback did that this year. Wasn't after the first 4 games but after he played in 4 (and yes, at this point he was the starting quarterback), he decided he didn't want to play anymore so he could maintain his redshirt.

If one disagrees with Franklin, are they now “haters”? Will Franklin collect receipts like the clown at Colorado, is that what it is today?

^^^^^This is what's going to kill college football. You can only ignore the fans for so long.
Yeah, players only have the opportunity because the fans support them, buy their training, their coaching, get them NIL money, etc. Then expecting them to pay hundreds to go to a bowl game where players opt out is a big FU.

What could fans reasonably expect given that we lost both coordinators, an AA OT, an All B1G DE, and 2 CBs projected to be drafted in the first 3 rounds of the NFL Draft?
What can fans expect? Overpriced game tickets and inflated hotel rooms to watch a team who had players quit.

I wonder if the day will come when no one attends bowl games except MNC due to opt-outs
Just heard Iowa has a couple injuries but no opt-outs. yet they have players who are moving on and likely want to make a run at NFL.

If the people paying them agree, then yes. That might be a sort of temporary fix for the opt outs--people paying the NIL money contractually require the players to compete in ALL games, unless injured. Teams and players could fudge that probably but you can only bite the hand that feeds you so often.
I think that would mean the NIL contract with the player is for playing as opposed to NIL value. i dont think anyone would want a contract like that to get in the public domain.

did he stay on the team? if you quit the team can they force you to pay for part of the semester? you still have to succeed academically to transfer.

barring a miracle I think 9-3 would be a very good year. that probably is not playoff, and would lead to a second tier bowl and we would see the same type of opt outs we just saw yesterday.

This thread is meandering.

In short, do you see PSU Football Inc on an Upswing or Downswing in 2024?

Upswing, Drew Allar may be the most experienced QB of the new BIG: OSU, Michigan, Oregon, USC, and Washington all loose their starters. Wild.

Not a drastic Downswing for me though(probably 9-3): I don’t think they can fix this offense because the basic philosophy is all Franklin ‘s, and it can’t beat anyone who recruits better than us without Saquon turning 5 yard losses into 25 yard gains.

Maybe. But what took Harbaugh so long at Michigan? Why did he wait til year 7 to finally get rolling? Seems to me if he's the miracle worker you portray him to be, he would have had Michigan where they are now much earlier. I think Harbaugh's a really good coach. But I don't think after being at Michigan for 6 years he suddenly woke up and said "ok, we're going to start dominating, starting today!" and it magically happened.
