we have the boosters for a basketball national championship? I disagree.
Take the 5 million for basketball and up it to 7 using football money. 2 million less in football won’t make a difference when you’re already horrible. If we’re gonna suck regardless who gives a s hit

When you are as down as we are right now, what costs other SEC schools 10 million to build a roster would cost us waaay more:

You are a 4 star QB from Ohio and you have 4 offers- South Carolina, Arkansas, Ole Miss and Miss State. You like all coaches and offensive styles. You would have to sit for 1 year at every school but State where you can start day 1 and State is offering 600k and the others offering 500k. With the rebuild we have in front of us you would be an idiot to go to State honestly. The difference in money offered would have to be significantly more for me to go somewhere that I know has way less resources to compete and surround me with talent.

This is our biggest problem. Our big players can’t unite. We can’t spread ourselves thin over the three sports and expect to be great in any of them. If all of the NIL went strictly to football we could be really good like Ole Miss.
I dont think our boosters would unite around basketball at the neglect of baseball and football.... hence my line of we dont have the boosters for it... and quiet frankly.. probably couldnt lure the big name talent in for it either.

Once it became "legal" to pay players, the programs that already had an established pipeline $$ are doing fairly well with some modifications.
Others (like MSU) are playing catch-up.
Basketball is the quickest ROI.

cant disagree more. There are more major players with deeper pockets than we could even dream of in the basketball space.

when you hear rumors about what we paid Tolu.. what do you think its going to cost to get real talent? Let alone a roster full of it.

For us.. its baseball. And yes our baseball NIL is already farther behind that some want to mention. Get it in that LSU realm and enjoy a run of baseball success is the quicket ROI by a long shot.

We are talking about the best ROI as far as winning AND the impact on the university. Basketball gives us both. Baseball just gives us winning.

Although the Dude in the spring is definitely a good student recruiting tool.

i still dont agree. We already have baseball support that is going nowhere. Up the ticket prices. Up the lounge prices. Double the NIL, get the Skenes and Tommy Tanks, and enjoy one heckuva baseball run. The pieces are already in place.

The upfront cost to get basketball going and then having to compete with other schools is simply too much for us to swallow. It'll first cost you a coach. Then you'll have to severly overpay for talent to over come a track record that is very blah and facilites and fan support that are below average.

The question was quicket return on ROI... it'll take more than a few years for us to see any ROI if we invest in basektball. We throw it all into baseball.. we'll see it really quick.... now if you want to talk bset investment then thats a different arguement, but basketball isnt going to be fixed in 1 or 2 seasons, even if we dump a load of money into it.

Just to have some positive publicity and public image, having an elite eight basketball team would be a real shot in the arm. Football is getting to be an embarrassment.

Football is going to suck no matter what now so why not throw all your eggs in Basketball and Baseball?
Because those sports don't have nearly as much of a return as football does. And quite frankly no one cares about college baseball except a handful of schools.

$10 million spent on baseball and basketball would be wasted. Even if it guaranteed a top 10 team every year.

It's like a retail business in the 00's saying, "Well, we're so far behind with our online business we should just give up on that and dump all of our money into catalog distribution and brick and mortar stores." It's a recipe for disaster. If we don't maintain at least mediocrity in football (which requires $$$) then we'll end up like Sears, K-Mart, Blockbuster, etc. Then we won't have the money to be competitive in ANY of the sports.

Better everywhere. President, AD, NIL coordinator, coaches & fans. They’re getting the team they deserve & we’re getting the team we deserve. I’m very envious of them right now.
Agreed. I've seen the writing on the wall since around the time Cohen took over and Mullen left. The trajectory for our athletics (particularly football) has been downhill since then and doesn't appear to be changing.

We have never gotten the Skenes and Tanks. You act as if we didn't try to pay for them. For whatever reason, the upper tier proven players simply don't gravitate to MSU. Even in baseball, our prime targets over the years have been the 4 star types (if using the football methodology) and a few 5 stars here or there that have an issue (for instance, Bednar having an arm injury in high school).

We have a coach. Our facility is also fine. Boosters are in place. To go to the next level, we need our fans to come out, all year long (not just against SEC teams). We may not have an elite basketball culture, but we also do not have an absence of one. We absolutely can win a national title in that sport.

we were outbid by a long shot for both players. Again if we throw all our money into baseball. Now we dont get outbid.. OR we outbid others enough to where it all adds up for players to come. We arent fighting our facilites or history in that sport.

We dont have a coach that is proven to be anything. He runs an offense that t isnt an NBA style offense. Meaning the top talent that wants to go to the NBA isnt going to be interested. Our facilities are subpar, its laughable to think otherwise.

For us to be successful in basketball. You'll have to fire Jans. Get a coach that is more into the NBA model of basketball. Be willing to pump major money to outbid (likely by a long shot) top tier talent... and then convience that talent to come play with little to no history of success. You'll have to follow the alabama model. Go get the coach. Run an attractive style. Schedule way harder than we currently are. Then be prepared to throw TONS of money at players to get them to come in. Alabama was successful in year 2, but they really didnt take a step into the national stage until last season. So it was a 4 year project, throwing LOTS of money at it. Thats what it'll take here.

We enjoy it. Idgaf if others enjoy it that is not my concern. People will go to football games already for the experience. Football is going to make money regardless. What is the difference in spending X amount and going 4-8 and spending Y amount and going 3-9 while greatly improving other sports that fans enjoy? You would rather just suck in all 3?

The SEC will pay MSU about $53 Million this year… Football still pays the bills..
Win or lose yes. Don't be short sighted. Look at the entire balance sheet. Everyone is going to post 7 to 8 figure losses in football other than 1 team. And even that 1 team will have only modest gain for about 18 months

again... if you feel strongly about something... its generally a good idea to be on the other side of it.

If you think we have everything in place minus the fans to compete for a national championship in MBB... then so be it. Its actually one of the dumber takes youve had.

I'm glad you enjoy it. The overwhelming majority of America does not. And that means it's not a bright idea to use football money for baseball.

The only way we suck at all 3 is if we do what you proposed initially and dump all our eggs into basketball and baseball. It's not rocket science.

These numbers will make people look back in a few years and say, "You could have a CFP contending roster in 2024 for only $10 million? Who was dumb enough not to pay for that?"
In a few years we will be paying $10 million for our roster.

Because winning a natty in a club sport does nothing to move the needle for the university.

Tennessee can be as dominant as they want to be. They still don’t draw 5k per game. Neither does half of our league. The rest of the country doesn’t care. At all.
Well then by all means Rocky why don't you just dole out my money to where you think it should go

How are you this stupid?

It can be argued that it’s dumb to ignore football. But what CANNOT be argued, is if we dumped all our NIL in basketball/baseball, we would be damn good in both of them.

Your and idiot.

Look at Duke and Gonzaga. National names as recognized as most big football programs. I think elite eight is very doable for Jans

This is just beginning. It’s a bidding war, costs are going to skyrocket to the point only a handful of schools will be able to pay. You guys can be jealous of UM for now, but they won’t be able to keep up. Neither of us will in any sport.

I’m sure we’d be great in baseball and basketball if we dumped all of our NIL baseball and basketball.

We would have tons of SunBelt titles to show for it baseball. Probably some NIT titles in basketball. Maybe instead of NITchampsburg we could rename it NITchampsville on our billboards.

The rivalry between us and Southern Miss in football would get really heated at times - that comes with the territory when you ignore football.

We’d have 20k-30k in Davis Wade when we battle UL Monroe or Troy for those intense conference battles.

But you would be happy and grin like a moron because baseball and basketball did good.

This is ridiculous

Jans has this program a short hop to an elite eight. You don’t fire that. basketball is the most easy fix of all sports, 1–2 players and you make a huge leap.
