Well,that’s twenty years
Just because we had a 20 year period of low inflation, mainly because of a huge recession, does not mean we are entitled to low inflation going forward. Politics, etc. aside, inflation goes in cycles. And right now it's not even that high vs. other times in history.

Needed a meal in a hurry a few weeks ago and was right by a McD's, so hit up the drive through. I saw the price for the medium fry was $3,69. I thought this was surely a typo. Asked the lady at the window if the price was accurate and she exclaimed "yes, can you believe it?!?" A large fry is $4. Four bucks for fries at McD's. Who would have ever thought?
Let’s go Brandon.

Y'all think it's bad now. The Fed has screwed up lowering the inflation rate. They have been far too conservative in jumping on inflation. It went over three times what it was two and a half years ago. That last .25 raise in interest is about as far as they want to go.

Any more and region banks will start failing at an alarming rate. Lenders have already shut off loans to most average joes without outstanding credit scores. No money moving and everybody suffers.

It's only been 15 years since the Obama recession hit (Freddie Mac/Fannie Mae was forced to accept bad clients). 70% of Americans are already paycheck to paycheck now. If Feds raise rates again it's going to get ugly fast.

I said “abnormally “. Last twenty plus years its been steady and low compared to the seventies and eighties plus, with the exception of oil and other commodities. Last two years have been like I’ve never seen. I paid 12.5 % interest on a new car in 1979. Inflation was steadily going up. This time it has gone up in chunks and much higher than the official government numbers of around 7-8%. At least that’s what my pocketbook tells me

I only worked at McDonald's for one week and do not know internal economics but can guess that they have a profit margin regardless of state of the economy. Until inflation gets back to under 2% and interest rates get back down, they have to cover the "cost of money" and do so by passing the cost to the consumer. The consumer does have a say...we could refuse to buy the product but the likely outcome will be a store closing sign.
You seem to understand "internal economics" pretty well, unlike many other posters that are declaring it is just company greed. We have stuck a knife in the back of American businesses with all the regulations and then add on the uncontrolled inflation. Businesses aren't here to be non-profit organizations and simple minded people think that businesses make a profit and then just leave it sitting in some account. No, they actually reinvest it in the company and in various non-profit donations, it all expands the economy, on and on, it's called capitalism and it works.

Surely they can probably go down on the prices because most McDonald's have kiosks now which eliminates someone physically taking your order anymore. Greedy world we live in.
Making a profit in America is now greed, hmmmm

The other day I grilled some sliced chicken breasts soaked in Italian dressing, fried up some bacon slices. Toasted some deli buns on the grill with a bit of butter. Added honey mustard and mayo on the buns, swiss cheese tomato and lettuce, black pepper, and made some chicken and bacon sandwiches with baked potato chips and dill pickles. Got enough for 8 sandwiches to eat, all for around $20......
I love the chicken breasts soaked in Italian dressing on onion buns, I'm hungry now.

Can't compare historical numbers these days because they are adjusted to achieve an outcome (cooked). Apples are now oranges!

It's high, though, and it's unrelenting so far. Items I purchase at the grocery store - as I was reminded yesterday - are STILL going up in price.

Since 2022’ish food prices have going way up with no signs of going back down. It’s been a minute since I’ve been to McDonalds- but I paid almost $15 for a #1 which is a classic BigMac meal maybe a year ago. It’s tasty but for that price no thanks.
The bag of Alexia onion rings from any grocery store used to be $4. Now almost $10. Seems like every month prices increase.

In the past year I have spent all my time in Philippines, Thailand, and Colombia. I don't know how you guys do it. I was eating fantastic meals in Thailand for $2.

You can get delicious spicy marinated dog for well under $2 in Thailand and in the Philippines. Highly recommended........

Haha. It's really not like that. I would avoid the Wuhan market though. The street food in Thailand is great. Surprisingly the only time I became suspicious was at an Indian restaurant in Tokyo.

As of last summer, we (U.S) ranked in the middle among all nations in the world regarding inflation. I don't know where we rank today. However, the pace of inflation in the U.S. has slowed now for 10 consecutive months.

Mcdonalds had a net income of over 6 Billion dollars in 2022.

Employees wages were estimated to be $4.7 billion. They can double the pay of every single employee and they would still turn a profit

sources: https://www.businessinsider.com/mcdonalds-could-double-wages-for-employees-and-make-less-money-2013-7#:~:text=According to the Kansas City,on revenue of $27 billion.

Maybe there are more factors at play than employees wanting a living wage
Net income or net profit? If net income, then no, they couldn't double the employee wages.

When I was going to USC, I remember paying 25 cents/gallon for gas. And even before that, I paid 75 cents for a haircut (and did not tip). Now if I go to Great Clips.....oh my.

You should have gone to Chilis's and order the 3 for me deal.
Oldtimer burger/cheese, Coke, Fries, and an appetizer.. 10.99. Best deal going around.

We had stopped going to Chili's for a while, but just can't beat this deal. Particularly if you just want a decent lunch.

……... Even now, I won’t take the family to chic-fil-a like we used to because the cost is way too high for fast food.
We’ve cut our eating out to nearly zero. I’m talking McD’s, to CFA to San Jose to any steak house. We eat out maybe twice a month. And usually those are the fast food variety. Nice meals out just aren’t in the regular budget.

Price of a fast food meal from selections not on any kind of bargain menu can easily pass $20 for two people now. My wife and I now bust that at Arby's all the time.
I love the Lancaster Arby's. Not because the food is so great. But because they're never busy. The older I get the less I like to wait.

And even that deal's gone up...it used to be the 3 for 10 deal only a year or two ago, and there were a number of options on the list for $10. Now the burger is the only option for 10.99, everything else is higher.

Used to be very busy on Sunday nights after church. Not anymore. Covid slammed Sunday night church attendance and stimulus packages whacked worker availability.

Can't beg people to come to church on Sunday night anymore.

How much would you have to charge the public for that many sandwiches - or one such sandwich? By the way, that's an appealing meal.

Yeah, they are increasingly rare. Some of us Baptists are holding on.
Our church went to small groups and D groups on Sunday night. Those are fine, but people with funny work schedules needed that Sunday night service and others benefitted as well. What we have done has just made us lazier.

Lazier for sure. Many churches went to livestream during Covid, for obvious reasons, but it made people lazy.

I'm only 45, but I'm a dinosaur I guess. Still do Sunday School, Sunday morning, Sunday night and Wednesday night (AWANA for kids). It keeps getting whittled down to all that's left for most people is Sunday morning. There's not much left to give up. Hard to imagine church building sitting dormant for all but a couple hours a week. I'm all about training the next generation though. If not, you're maybe a couple generations away from having totally unchurched offspring. I don't think the solution to any of our nation's problems is for Christians to go to church less.

Rant over.

Why would anybody eat that?
Because it tastes like heaven in a greasy paper bag. The same reason they eat ice cream or cheese cake. It tastes good, it's fast, and it's (relatively) cheap. The important thing is to not eat it all the time

Next time I'm in a town with a Chili's I will have to check that out. I used to enjoy the Old Timer burger at Chili's when we lived near one. I can get behind a $10.99 meal. That sounds great.

My 16 year old son got his first "real" job this summer - not at McDonalds, but they were certainly in the running for his services. He doesn't need a "living wage," whatever that is. Frankly, he doesn't yet have the job skills to warrant a living wage, but he has to start somewhere and places like McDonalds are where you start. Hopefully, he will not still be working at McDonalds (or similar employer) when he is 26 and has more obligations. But if he is, I don't think it will be McDonalds' fault that he isn't earning a living wage.

Hey Freddie, I haven't seen you post in a long while and I was getting a little worried. I was over in Spruce Pine tonight eating at the Western Sizzlin Buffet and I thought about you. You see the mile marker sign for Marion in Spruce Pine. (You do sometimes cross my mind when I cut thru ETSU's campus to get to my office on West State of Franklin Rd.

When I got home, I jumped on here to see if you'd posted anywhere else and found you on this thread. Hope you're doing ok health wise.

Maybe you should stay away from crap like McDonalds or Chilli's and eat more healthy foods from Pal's Sudden Service or Ridgewood BBQ here in Tennessee...lol
