Yep, just get rid of those that don't have the interpersonal skills to complete the task of participating in a handshake line. As anyone that does not have the self control and character to complete such a simple task has no business coaching or interacting with college students, and surely is not the role model to mold young men (or young women) into productive citizens.

Let alone, "Michigan Men"..... ;)

Yeah, get rid of the handshake line. Take the easy out instead of doing the right thing.

I hate our world.

What makes it unnecessary? If the opponent is going to press until the final whistle with unbalanced personnel, why shouldn’t Gard coach to the final whistle?

It's an unwritten rule that if up by double digits with 14 our 15 seconds left in the game you don't call a timeout; even if the other team is pressing. Setting that aside, Wisconsin coaches escalated the situation by a) grabbing Howard in an effort to stop him during the forced sportsmanship charade that is the handshake line, and b) when Wisconsin assistant Krabbenhoft charged in. Howard is in the wrong for throwing a punch, but I agree with his assessment that Gard's gamesmanship was unnecessary given the score. Howard still has the most egregious violation for throwing a punch. No excuse for that. But Wisconsin's coaches are to blame here as well. Sue me.

Was taking an unnecessary timeout when winning by a bunch the right thing?

Gard explained his rationale. I don’t think he was trying to show up um. Regardless, calling a timeout is not the same as yelling in someone‘s face and hitting someone else. Not remotely similar.

Gard’s action was, at best, questionable. howard’s was flat out wrong,

There’s also an unwritten rule that you don’t press when you’re down double digits with 14 or 15 seconds left in the game.

Was pressing against the bench team in? You want to press like the game is on the line then you cannot cry foul over the timeout. Never mind throw a punch. You either want to keep playing or you don’t.
It's just like Mark Dantonio blitzing Devlin and then getting pissed when we throw long to Deon Butler. Like you said, do you want to keep playing or not.

If the other team's starters are pressing my walk-ons, then any unwritten rules go out the window and I'm gonna do what I can to help my walk-ons.

Gard stopped Howard after Howard dropped a remark about remembering that (to which Gard wanted to get in his point too). I wouldn't have had an issue with Gard getting a suspension for a game for his role in it too, but in the grand scheme of things, I'd put about 5% of the blame on Gard's actions and 95% on Howard's.

This is the absolute truth for once and is why no one here is blaming Wisconsin. Good on you Bob for being honest.
The names on the jerseys and/or coaches involved play zero into my position...I like both Howard and Gard. But Howard screwed up big time on Sunday.

5% for grabbing someone not your family or on your team/staff? Weird math.

Seems about as much the "right thing" and as necessary as pressing against a team that is up by an insurmountable amount and that has it's subs in the game with 30 seconds left in the game ...

The timeout was called to allow the subs to get the ball over half court and run the clock out. The pressing was called for by Howard to give him something positive to talk about, but didn't seem to do that, and hard to see how it would given that Wisky had the subs in and was merely trying to run out the clock which would end Howard's pain sooner. But alas, the Michigan Man just used it to pick a fight.

He didn't escalate anything. Touching someone's arm, another coach when those coaches have met and talked numerous times in the past (at games, media events, and likely off season trips and functions), is not a provocation for a fight. Period. i.e. with a normal person. Howard is abby-normal and should not be a leader of young men. He should be fired, or else transferred to the UM boxing team coaching staff!!!

If we are discussing two fifth graders I'd agree with you, but we're talking about adults.
