Woody was against a Clemson player who was tackled out of bounds after an interception. Howard had a opportunity to walk away but decided to throw a punch instead. Then he was unapologetic during the interview. Makes me also wonder about Martelli who is supposed to be his wise assistant but didn’t tell him to gather his thoughts before he went into the press conference.

I think a suspension for the remainder of the season (regular and tournament) is appropriate.

Everyone is focusing on the coaches, but watch the #5 and #14 with Michigan. They were throwing punches and at one point might have exchanged some "friendly fire." Has anyone seen a reverse angle of the melee from behind the benches?

In a related story, the NCAA took swift action on this matter by abolishing the Eastern Michigan basketball team from the NCAA tournament.
Ypsilanti is less than ten miles from Ann Arbor. "Close enough", says the NCAA.

I have seen zero indication that this was anything racial, and I have been paying attention.
There wasn't and there isn't. Its Howard who has an anger management issues, and apparently michy or the B1G couldn't care less.
they just pulled out the "apology" press release form from the previous 2 incidents and changed the name.

If Howard wanted to punch someone for calling a timeout, it should have been Chris Webber.
OMG. That is classic.

Maybe Howard was upset at the realization that UM was not going to the NCAA when the fans in Madison were chanting "NIT, NIT,...."

From another article on the incident:
"
Personally, my favorite moment of the whole thing was the Badger fan base chanting “NIT, NIT, NIT” as the 14-11 Wolverines finally left the floor."

Howard should be fired. Let's wait and see if the leaders at Michigan have the same moral courage as the Ohio State leadership exhibited when they fired the legendary Woody Hayes.

Lets not make tOSU better than it is 'cause they fired an old coach who was long past any chance to win a championship.

The actual in-game stuff that led to the after-game kerfuffle, as I understand them:

Wisky is up by almost 20 with a little under a minute to play
Wisky coach calls time out to put bench players including some walk-ons in the game
Michigan continues to press, even though the game is out of hand
Wisky bench players don't handle the press well, so Wisky coach calls time out again
Game ends, Wisky wins
After game stuff happens.

Seems like Howard had no problem playing hard to the end but didn't like it when Wisky did the same. Am I missing anything?

It sounds like Gard, as the coach, was coaching. How dare he.

Apparently some Wisconsin players were hurt in the aftermath.

J Howard will probably have to sit out for a half. Never would the Big10 take action against Michigan or Da O$U. Already spinning the story to the “postgame handshake” versus the jerk coach assaulting someone. Michigan has a worldclass PR team. And they need it lately. Seems some large culture problem there.

I don't think anyone is trying to make OSU better than they were. They had no choice but to fire Woody. If you talk to many old time OSU people back then, they'll tell you that Woody wasn't mentally right his last 2 or 3 years and this was coming. He hit a Clemson player in full football gear and probably couldn't have hurt the player no matter how hard he tried.

Fast forward to yesterday, If you want to see what this could have evolved into, go back to the Minnesota mugging of the OSU basketball team a few decades ago. I still remember that big. tall OSU center lying on the floor beaten severely - can't remember his name. Almost everyone blamed the Minnesota HC as the instigator. No matter how Desdumb or their fan base tries to spin it, the HC is supposed to be a model - example for young college players. Well, everywhere but Michigan

I’d like to place a max bet on the “over” one half as the length of the suspension.

Yeah, that's my take as well, if Gard hadn't insisted on explaining himself nothing would have happened. Still, no excuse.
When I posted this I hadn’t realized that Howard (according to both coaches) said “I’m going to remember this,” before Gard tried to explain. I can think of zero coaches who would not have pushed back on a remark of this sort.

There is no excuse for throwing the punch, period. You get paid well at that school to be a coach and you were paid well by boosters as a player....grow up and use your words at some point in your life. Any other occupation pretty much anywhere and you throw a punch outside of boxing, MMA, and hockey....you're pretty much fired. Nothing would surprise me anymore, but I'm just not seeing any justification for the punch.

If you watched the video, Howard grabbed Gard’s sweater in a balled up fist after Gard put his hand on Howard’s elbow. Howard immediately released his sweater and then went off. Any other work place, a person would be immediately fired.

At Michigan's remaining home game at OSU, I wonder if they'll play "Hit Me With Your Best Shot" to get under Howard's skin. I'm sure the conference would frown on it though. Bad sportsmanship and all that.

I considered punching a d bag at Costco an hour ago cause he was blocking the smoked salmon. The only reason I didn’t knock his A out was I didn’t feel like addressing it at the press conference
