We’re on the coast for the weekend and are wondering if The Packs has MS Gulf Coast restaurant recommendations, besides Cap D’s.

Mosaic in Ocean Springs for live music and good atmosphere with tons of beer options.

Glory Bound has excellent variety of hummus appetizer and killer gyros. Good bbq pizza. Good place for drinks. Live music too.

The Lady May in Ocean Springs has incredible food with acoustic live music.

701 Craft is a cool bar spot in Ocean Springs.

Bay St. Louis has a more Nola type atmosphere but food options are better in OS.

McElroys in Biloxi is good.

White House Hotel restaurant, Cora’s, has a very good brunch (white table cloth style).

if you have kids, Tato-Nut Donuts in OS. Potato bread donuts. Kids will love ‘em. You will thank me later.

Is Mary Mahoney's still open in Biloxi? Probably one of my favorite restaurants ever.
Still open. Prior to Katrina there was also Mary Mahoney's Cafe (I think that was the name) that was separate from the main restaurant. The cafe had a few different options and was less expensive, but it didn't come back after Katrina.

True story. Ran into and chatted with George Jones and his wife for about 15 minutes at the top of the stairs outside the restroom at Mary Mahoney's, in January of 2011. They came in as we were finishing and leaving. Wife had gone to the restroom when they came strolling through the bar. His wife went in the restrooom, so the Possum and I were standing there beside each other, and I asked him if he was George Jones. He said, "yessir, I am". About that time, the Maître d' told him "Mr. Jones, your table will be ready in a few minutes". They apparently had a table reserved in a less crowded room of the restaurant, there to the left after you go up the stairs. They had just flown down for leisure. He wasn't playing anywhere. He was way shorter than you'd have ever thought. He asked my wife to stand on one of the stairs lower than him when we took pictures, so as to not look short in pictures

OS has more food options, but if you're there for a weekend, Bay St. Louis has plenty that are good. Fields is as good as anything you will have in Ocean Springs. Definitely not as good of a value as Phoenecia, but it's just as good or better. I have heard a lot more mixed reviews out of Bay St. Louis lately. I think they got such an influx of people from New Orleans starting with COVID that they may have had more trouble than other places dealing with labor shortages and maintaining quality.

depends on what you want....local, chain , hole in the wall...etc...Captain Al's is good for the money ... Mary Mahoney' s has some nice signature dishes ... the Chimneys was good as well...Rack house good steaks and bourbon and cigar room. Half Shell char Broiled oysters are great... Taronto's has crawfish ...almost any of the beachside places shaggy's, Felix's, Baccas on the beach, Steve's Marina, the Blind tiger have good casual bar food.

White Pillars is the best dinner on the coast imo. Great bar area and food is outstanding. Taranto’s, as a few have mentioned, for crawfish. Some mentioned Phonecia in OS- always good especially lunch- be advised it’s bring your own beer/wine. Mahoney’s bar for apps, which I think are better than their entrees. Project Lounge is a smoky dive bar with my favorite burger in MS; might get shot- might be kinda worth it. If in the Pass, I always enjoyed a poboy and a Barq’s at Pirates Cove, and surprisingly good sushi at Fat Sumo. Sleeper dish- the Dover sole @ BR Prime @ The Beau.

Really need to know what you are looking for and whether you want to drive down the beach or not. This time of year shouldn't be bad driving down the beach I don't think as long as there's not some event going on. Think you're past the spring break crowds.

Some of this may be dated because I don't get down there as much as I used to, but: Phoenecia in Ocean Springs is to me the best restaurant on the coast. And it has traditional coastal dishes like pan fried speckled trout, red snapper, soft shell crab, etc. Brown bag though so bring what you want to drink; even if it's beer. There are other restaurants that are as good, but none as good with so many dishes and so cheap. Taranto's in Woolmarket is a hole in the wall and is the best place to get boiled shrimp or crab. Two other great hole in the wall restaurants that aren't "coastal" are Sicilian II and Mr. Greek. I think they are both brownbag but not positive.

White pillars in Biloxi is really good also and is high end. Not exactly a "coastal" restaurant if that matters, but good. Half Shell is solid if you want something a little cheaper that still has decent fish dishes. The WHitehouse hotel has a good bar and used to have good bar food (and Cora's was good). Have heard mixed reviews since the last time I was there. If you don't mind driving to Gulfport Chimney's signature trout dish is as good as anything else you'll have on the coast. If you want entertainment with dinner, the Saphire Supper Club is a cool experience. Fields in Bay St. Louis is legit. I have not eaten at the one in Biloxi but I've heard it's not as consistent.

More casual options (although nothing requires anything more than blue jeans): Filling Station is pretty good and has a cool set up if the weather is nice. The Reef is touristy but it has great views if the wind isn't blowing too hard and it's pretty solid food.

I wouldn't go out of my way to go to the casino restaurants, but if you're there and it's convenient, I wouldn't avoid them. BR Prime is good. JIA is really good if you want sushi. Tien in the IP is also good if you want Asian and some of the tables/hibachi used to have pretty good views of the Bay. 32 in the IP has great views if you get a table with a view. Mignons at the Palace has some tables with good bay views. The other casino restaurants I think are all typical casino restaurants where you can't tell you're on the coast at all. Morton's and Ruth's Chris are what they are. Perfectly good but I wouldn't go to them unless you were just there and wanted something easy.

The Chimney’s for fine dining
Felix’s and Taranto’s for casual food. Don’t go to Shaggy’s.
There’s half shells everywhere, but they are still good as hell

Half Shell is solid. Torontos is good. The Reef is a good spot if you have kids and the boardwalk they built there is nice. McElroys has been hit or miss for me.

Brooklyn Pizza and Fat Baby and Alise’s(poboys) are my go to hole in the walls.

Was in BSL last month for my son's wedding. The food was quite expensive and very underwhelming.

There definitely aren't any value spots in BSL and there are some in OS. I think the influx of New Orleans people just allows them to charge more. And the restaurants that didn't buy their property before everything got crazy expensive have high real estate costs to cover. But the only times I've eaten at Fields it has certainly been expensive but it's been top notch. Been longer since I've eaten at Trapani's or North Beach but they used to be good to very good, provided you knew what to order. Again, not great value, but plenty good. And Blind Tiger used to have excellent if simple food. Certainly high priced for what it was, but good quality. Ugly Pirate isn't anything special food wise but I still loved it. A little off the beaten path but I also used to love Rum Kitchen, although I had a higher opinion of it than most people I knew.

But as I've said, a lot of my personal info is dated now and I've heard a lot more mixed reviews out of BSL lately for everything but Fields, which still gets rave reviews, at least for the BSL location.

Totally agree with you about the heavy, heavy NOLA vibe there. I remember going to BSL with my grandfather back in the 80's, and it was really just another coast town. Not the case anymore, that's for sure. But the downtown part is pretty nice and quaint. We had a nice stay at The Pearl.

Another vote for Mary Mahoney's. Legendary restaurant that has stayed popular through 3 generations...long before most of us here were born. Restaurants that aren't excellent don't have staying power like that. It has long been the place A-list celebrities, power-politicians, etc. have gone.

If you have never been, you should go at least once.

I like the Reef in Biloxi. Good seafood and reasonably priced. And if you don’t want seafood, they have the best darn hamburger in the state of Miss. and it doesn’t need any catsup, mustard, mayo, or anything else added. I promise.
