Good pick with Shuman. His 2 years as the starting QB were 1973-74, following All American John Hufnagel who started last half of 1970 and all of 71-72.

Shuman went 22-2 as a starter, while Hufnagel went 26-3 (although Oklahoma forfeited its Sugar Bowl win, so maybe Huffy should get credit for 27-2 ... jk).

When talking about the best RBs ever, Larry Johnson is usually an afterthought. He was a one man wrecking crew, particularly later in the season. He eclipsed 2K and had no All BIG O-linemen in front of him. Didn’t show for the bowl game though. Miserable day.

A similar story related to Steve Smith. He was the scout team’s Herschel Walker in the run up to the Sugar Bowl. Bauer: “Steve Smith was Herschel and he did it perfectly, had it all down. We nailed him and nailed him until he said ‘I’m tired of being Herschel Walker’ and wanted to quit.”
One of my all time favorite PSU players.

Mac Morrison, LB who played the TE side, allowing Lavar to improvise. It was, IMO, why the Redskins sort-of wasted Lavar by playing him on the TE side (strong side) thus he was always fighting off a block as opposed to roaming the field.

Gary Brown, played defense when needed, played offense when needed. I might add played very well at both. He also had a very good Pro career. I will never forget the Ty Detmar strip!!
Gary Brown had a lot of success running back kicks and to be honest I didn't understand why. It's not that he wasn't talented. It was just surprising how holes seemed to open up for him.

I felt bad for him. For some reason he was overlooked in favor of Derek Day until Day got injured. When he got his chance he did great except for a couple of fumbles. He was benched and seldom heard from again.
