Wife and I are heading to New Orleans around Halloween. We haven’t been there since 1995.

A block or two down from the Omni is Johnny's Po Boys. Best Po Boy I ever had!!! Oyster is the best IMO.Omni Royal is nice. Also the Four Seasons has some decent rates (for a Four Seasons).
So many great restaurants (except Brennan’s).
Cafe du Monde for a beignet is a must.
Do you have a budget we can work with to make selections? Break it down by Hotel cost and how much/many splurge dinners you plan to have.Wife and I are heading to New Orleans around Halloween. We haven’t been there since 1995.

Lots of crime too.I can't help much because its been years since I was there, but agree with Cafe du Monde.
New Orleans is interesting. Great history, great food, great vibe.
But it is dirty, and because of it's elevation and poor drainage, it is usually pretty, well, its just got a certain smell to it.
I have to be honest --- other than the French Quarter and the restaurant scene I can't stand New Orleans. IMO, Bourbon Street is strictly "amateur hour" and "tourist trap" personified, the Mississippi River looks like an unattractive slow moving passage of mostly unappealing brown hued muddy water, and, as you said, it has more than its share of lowlifes and crime. That said, the French Quarter is (almost) worth the trip alone, but to me New Orleans is very overrated. A long weekend with dinners out ---definitely OK. A week long vacation destination --- no thanks.Lots of crime too.
Last stayed there long ago, when the old Fairmount was still a five-star hotel. When leaving I packed carefully so as to leave nothing behind.I have to be honest --- other than the French Quarter and the restaurant scene I can't stand New Orleans. Obviously someone has never been to Slidell for the blessing of the fleet. Now that’s a real Cajun partyI have to be honest --- other than the French Quarter and the restaurant scene I can't stand New Orleans. Brennan's still make the best Banana's Foster.Omni Royal is nice. Also the Four Seasons has some decent rates (for a Four Seasons).

Dragos for chargrilled oysters.Dragons or Acme for chargrilled oysters.
Brunch at Commander's isn't too bad either. The bread pudding souffle is better than any banana fosters you can get. Couchon's is another favorite of mine as well as Jacques-Imo's is another cannot miss on Tuesday nights as you go right next door and see Rebirth Brass bad.Complete the triple header foodies... My father did this in one day... Breakfast at Brennan's then K-Pauls for lunch then Commander's Palace for dinner. He swore he put on 10 pounds in 1 day.
