Wife and I are heading to New Orleans around Halloween. We haven’t been there since 1995.
Any recommendations for places to stay or visit?

Omni Royal is nice. Also the Four Seasons has some decent rates (for a Four Seasons).

So many great restaurants (except Brennan’s).

Cafe du Monde for a beignet is a must.

I can't help much because its been years since I was there, but agree with Cafe du Monde.

New Orleans is interesting. Great history, great food, great vibe.

But it is dirty, and because of it's elevation and poor drainage, it is usually pretty, well, its just got a certain smell to it.

A block or two down from the Omni is Johnny's Po Boys. Best Po Boy I ever had!!! Oyster is the best IMO.
If you need linen napkins and all that ****.....Don't go there, but if you want real New Orleans grub....Johnny's is tops

Me, wife and son were there a few months ago. Son went to culinary school and worked at 1700° steakhouse until last month. It waschosen as best steakhouse in PA and the article used pics from his instagram for salads and desserts. Went to Antoines, Ruth's Chris. Last night planned to go to Emerils, but it was closed that day. Ended up downstairs from our VRBO at Briquette. It was by far our best meal. Don't forget to go to Cafe dumont for beignets too.

Do you have a budget we can work with to make selections? Break it down by Hotel cost and how much/many splurge dinners you plan to have.

I have to be honest --- other than the French Quarter and the restaurant scene I can't stand New Orleans. IMO, Bourbon Street is strictly "amateur hour" and "tourist trap" personified, the Mississippi River looks like an unattractive slow moving passage of mostly unappealing brown hued muddy water, and, as you said, it has more than its share of lowlifes and crime. That said, the French Quarter is (almost) worth the trip alone, but to me New Orleans is very overrated. A long weekend with dinners out ---definitely OK. A week long vacation destination --- no thanks.

Last stayed there long ago, when the old Fairmount was still a five-star hotel. When leaving I packed carefully so as to leave nothing behind.

Obviously someone has never been to Slidell for the blessing of the fleet. Now that’s a real Cajun party

Wife and I are headed to Memphis for half a week, then we’re driving to New Orleans for the other half of the week. Really looking forward to it. We have a hotel in Slidell. Keep the ideas coming.

Sorry - hit the button too early - Cafe Du Mond and dont wait in the line - its seat yourself but people line up for no reason - Bourbon Street is a sh&t hole anymore - dont be there after dark - great restaurants on the outskirts of town.

I haven't been, and no real strong desire to go, but if I do I'll hit up Commander's Palace for lunch. They have 25 cent Martinis (limit 3 per person). Can't be that bad, right?

Complete the triple header foodies... My father did this in one day... Breakfast at Brennan's then K-Pauls(Paul Prudhomme) for lunch then Commander's Palace for dinner. He swore he put on 10 pounds in 1 day.

Brunch at Commander's isn't too bad either. The bread pudding souffle is better than any banana fosters you can get. Couchon's is another favorite of mine as well as Jacques-Imo's is another cannot miss on Tuesday nights as you go right next door and see Rebirth Brass bad.

Three must eats in New Orleans: Po Boy, Jambalaya, and a Muffaletta. Make the Po Boy with half shrimp/half oyster.
