Many-faceted question, so I'll provide simple answers:

a. women's basketball operates in the red, lots of it.

b. men's basketball generates a surplus of about $2.5mm. Take away Big Ten revenue sharing, to which PSU contributes precious little, and it's in the hole to the tune of about $6.5mm.

Here'something to chew on: most recent basketball ticket sales totaled $625K. Same number for tOSU: $5.2mm.
How can you take away revenue sharing? No one gets by without the TV money.

I see two options.

1. Go young and cheap and get a guy who can make them respectable in 3 years, and then watch him cruise away.

2. Go for an older guy, at a reasonable salary, and ride him out for 5 or 6 years of mediocre results until he cashes it in. Repeat

Either way you don’t have to spend too many resources that you otherwise would have to take out of the minor sports that get you NCAA appearances that fatten up the AD resume.

What does the landscape look like for NIL in college basketball? I don't follow any college bball that closely (to include PSU to be honest) but would seem this is a 'weirder' space than NIL for college football since players have paid options (play overseas) available to them and can get to the pros much faster than football players. Are there any disruptors here (like Tennessee and Miami for college football)? What is the market like?

A simple-minded observation: Without significant portal help PSU is looking at a mediocre-at-best 23-24 season, around 13-15 wins. The new coach will need two-three years to get back to 68.

Shut it down now. Save us all a lot of heartache.

average person - "I didn't know PSU had a women's team"
PSU fan - "Yeah, we have uniforms and everything"... (borrowed from the movie "Major League'...
The team will be much more fun to watch next year in the form of a R-freshman transfer from Drexel.

We are not, never have been, and never will be a basketball school. Just face reality and relax.

LJ, I thought I was an optimistic person, you just blew me away. Without portal help or some last minute shocking recruiting, I doubt they could get to 10 wins. I hope I’m wrong and you are right!

Just a wild thought

Steve Alford.

His buy out in Nevada is about $4 MM. He was making a little over $1.2 mm per year.
He has a fair amount of success at all his stops -enough success to make PSU happy. A few down years but PSU is used to that.

Success is not a prerequisite.

I'd talk to Calvin Booth to get his opinion on who they can bring in to keep the future team together, including his son. He seems to have a pretty good basketball acumen.

Edit: Abort this mission. I repeat, abort this mission.

Rodney Terry of Texas is reportedly being considered by Kraft as our next coach. He can’t be courted until after Texas plays in their sweet 16 game but supposedly Texas is prepared to go in another direction rather than name him head coach after the season. He is currently the interim coach there.

Given the issues Texas dealt with earlier this year, and the level they are playing right now, it's a bit surprising that Texas would not pursue him.

Is this a report that you saw online?

Have at it....
Seems hiring a known name would add some "buzz" and hype to the program. PSU basketball has been disappointing for so long (with a few exception years) that there is next to no excitment for upcoming seasons. I do like either Luke Walton or Patrick Ewing as we desparitaly need a big and having a big as coach might help. I also like having NBA experience as just like football recruits want to be coached by someone that made the show. That said....there are many names on this list i would support....i do hope PSU places a minimum 4 year commitment to the next coaches contract.....PSU needs to stop the "stepping stone" opportunity stigma.

The Patrick Ewing "buzz" did wonders for Georgetown.

He’s waiting for a position to open at one of the colleges based in Indiana.

How about Tom Hovasse? There are a number of great Japanese restaurants in State College.
