According to my coworker who knows and is connected to Rhoades, there is a lot of NIL money sitting and waiting to be used by our new HC.

“UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State Vice President for Intercollegiate Athletics Patrick Kraft announced today (March 29) the hiring of Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU) head coach Mike Rhoades as the Peter and Ann Tombros Endowed Men’s Basketball Head Coach. In 19 seasons as a collegiate head coach, Rhoades, a Mahanoy City, Pennsylvania, native, has produced a 373-189 record, a winning percentage of .664, seven NCAA Tournament appearances and nine national postseason appearances.

Rhoades, whose contract was approved by the Board of Trustees on March 29, becomes the 15th men’s basketball head coach in Penn State history. Rhoades will be formally introduced in a press conference on Thursday, March 30, at 2:30 p.m., which will be broadcast live on Big Ten Network.

“We are excited to welcome Mike Rhoades as our head men’s basketball coach,” said Kraft. “He is a veteran head coach who is a proven winner at multiple levels. Mike has been a tremendous recruiter and talent developer throughout his career. As a Pennsylvania native with a strong family history with our University, Mike understands what it means to be a Penn Stater and how impactful it is to be part of Nittany Nation. Mike has a vision of how to build Penn State Basketball into a championship program. We are thrilled to welcome Mike, Jodie, Logan, Chase and Porter to Happy Valley.”

“It’s with great honor and excitement to be Penn State’s Peter and Ann Tombros Endowed Men’s Basketball Head Coach. I would like to thank Dr. Bendapudi, Pat Kraft and Michael Wade Smith for their faith in me and the opportunity to lead this great program,” said Rhoades. “We will be bold, different and aggressive moving our program forward. We will play with great energy and excitement while always being relentless in our pursuit of making this basketball family into something special. I can’t wait to get to work.””

Why such negativity? Seriously? Scepticism of this basketball program, justifiably earned over the 50 years since I graduated, is not negativity but reality. 5 trips to the dance in 58 years does not merit the positive reaction you seek. I have positive feelings about our programs that have earned it. Wrestling, football, women's and men's volleyball, hockey, fencing, soccer...the list is long. Basketball does not merit that reaction. If it ever does you can count me among those who will jump on board the bandwagon. I will not hold my breath.
Look at the big picture. If a school can be very good in many programs, why not basketball? Actually, it is one of tbe easiest to be competitive. You just need a few good players or one great one - along with a good or great coach and you Dan go along way. Best example is Indiana State, 1979.

So why not give the guys in the white hats the benefit of the doubt!?

Pitt has no such history in any sport. But I do not remember you being so critical of them?

If it's between paying a top basketball coach or lining up faux NIL deals for two 5* DTs, I want the DTs.

What the hell does Pitt have to do with this? However, since you brought them up, I checked. Since I graduated from Penn State we have gone to the Big Dance 5 times. Pitt has gone 23 times. I must admit, I had no idea it was that bad.
That aside, I have given Penn State basketball the benefit of the doubt. In the late 60's, the 70's, the 80's, the 90's, the 00's, the 10's.
We have been in the BigTen for 31 seasons. Guess how many times we have had a winning conference record? THREE! Good gawd! How is that even possible? We are actually much worse than I thought.
We have a long history of bad basketball and I wasted a lot of time watching it. Hoping, always hoping, that better days were ahead. They never were. This hire may be the greatest decision since Cael Sanderson, but it is much more likely to lead to another Ed DeChellis era. We shall see.

I will admit her last 2 years were sub-par, perhaps because of the controversy, but in the 7 years before that she won 167 games, an average of 24 a year. She slso made 7 straight trips to the dance and that included 2 Sweet 16's, an Elite 8, and a Final Four.

Her demise was of her own making, including actions like running off an entire class of her own recruits. Kicking players off the team in the hotel lobby after yet another post season loss to a lower ranked team. For all of her regular season success, Portland was notorious for choking in the post season and rarely ever playing up to seed. Wrong thread, so I’ll leave it lie.

Never too early to start the Boilo thread. Skook on the loose.

After all of the wailing of the last several days? :ROFLMAO:
anyone have information on this; is it true?

"Penn State Basketball's new head coach Mike Rhoades hasn't been on the job for even a day yet, but it already leaked on social media that former Nittany Lions star guard Joe Crispin will be joining his staff.

The report came out on Twitter shortly after the Board of Trustees at Penn State approved the hiring of Rhoades, as Matt Fortuna of The Athletic broke the news.

Crispin is a Pitman, N.J. native, who comes to State College after several seasons at Rowan University down in South Jersey, where he was an assistant coach from 2014-2016 before being promoted to head coach, where he's been ever since."

I have seen it reported in 247 that he is joining the Rhoades staff

Rhoades must have mistaken Pitman, NJ for Pitman, PA.

PSU appearance in the Big Ten championship and the NCAA tournament drew strong tv ratings. But the program averaged 8,512 tickers sold per home game. Well below the average for the Big 10 and Power 5 conferences. Rhoades had a hometown solution to that. My family is here, my Schuylkill County family is here,” Rhoades said during his introductory press conference on Thursday. “Attendance will definitely come up a lot because there will be a lot of road trips from Schuylkill County. You put a Yuengling truck out there, look out."

The Big Ten championship game drew the fewest viewers in 15 years, though it did well compared to other conference championship games that day. Viewership of PSU's games in the NCAA tournament was mixed, generally pretty good.

Your home attendance statistic was for last season. Back of the envelope computation for 2022-23 was about 800 fewer.

Pitt has won nothing in any sport for over 100 years. But you apologize for them because they have been better than Penn State (although PSU has a winning record in basketball vs Pitt) in one sport.

Men’s basketball at Penn State has been the anomaly at Penn State. My inferred point is to expect that to end - soon.

Rhoades is a proven winner.
